I am on a team running in the Boston Marathon in April 18th, 2005. We are running in support of the youth programs at Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries, (http://www.goodwillmass.org) a Boston non-profit organization. In an effort to increase the donations we receive for Morgan Memorial, we plan to sell Tshirts to runners that are training for the event.
Below is our general idea for the design of a shirt, although any creative suggestions - however similar or different - are strongly encouraged. We would like to send the design to the screenprinting company by midweek, hence the tight deadline of March 1st.
What we need help with most is the illustration of the runner(s). We are looking for something similar to the blue/yellow runner illustration provided, but an original design to call our own. We LOVE the style of this runner, if he were our own, the only change would be to have his legs be a bit closer together.
We'd like the overall design to look like a race number pinned on to the shirt. The number will have "Boston," "2005" and the runners on it, as shown in our example. The "In Training:" and "www.bostonrunner.com" can be in any font; we feel it would look best curved above and below the race number.
The design will be printed in one color, most likely on a white or light-colored shirt.
Thanks in advance for considering to help design this shirt. I've brought projects here before and have always been impressed with the responses... each and everyone of you is so incredibly talented!!!

How about this? :)

Hello Nathan;
Thanks for your concept, it's very nice. I like the runner as well as URL wrapping around him. Something about the runner seems slightly off-balance - maybe shorter arms or feet would help.
The design is strong but I still prefer the concept of a race number to identify with the marathon. Could you try to incorporate your runner into our idea?
thanks!

Hi Ron;
Thanks for your concept; it's cool. The runners are original but not really the style were after. While they flow, they're a bit too abstract. We'd like the runner(s) to appear more fun. :clap:
Seeing both designs reinforces our desire to use a race number for displaying Boston 2005. We feel that element adds instant association to a marathon.
thanks!

Hi Galin;
Thanks for submitting your concept. I like your runner; simple, fluid and clean. If we go w/ that runner, we'll probably ask you to adjust his arms and legs slightly.
thanks,

Hi Paula;
Thanks for posting your concepts. The first one is not the style we're seeking but the runner in your 2nd design is cool. Just as Galin's runner, it is smooth and fluid and you've given a motion effect too. Your runner's legs are also too spread apart, suggesting sprinting or hurdling rather than jogging. The arms are perfect.
We've decided to stick w/ our original concept of a race number w/ "in training" above and "www.bostonrunner.com" below the race number. I'll re-post the concept next b/c nobody's submitted a design following it.
thanks!

Here's the concept we'd like to with in the design, noting the following points:<br>
Font (size/style) for "in training" and URL are quick random choices; we'd like curved text but you can use whatever size & style you'd like.
Race number should have rounded corners and appear "pinned" to the shirt.
Font for "Boston" & "2005" should match that used in our example, the traditional font used in a race number.
The runners in our example will be replaced by runners you design. The new runner design may also be used on a sleeve or back of shirt.
thanks!

Hi Aaron;
Thanks for your concept. You've got the right idea on the number style (would be pinned @ 4 corners) but we're not looking to have everything on the number, just Boston 2005. Your runner is not the style we're after; looking for something more fluid and smooth. (almost cartoony)
thanks!

Hi Ron;
Thanks for taking another stab at this. Your runner is cool but we'd like something w/ curves. We'd like the runner to appear fluid and light so straight lines probably won't work. With that said, it's worth noting that the angle on the arms and legs of your runner are perfect... he looks like a jogger rather than a sprinter or hurdler!
thanks!

Hi Mark;
Thanks for posting your concept. It's close to the layout we're after except we'd like "in training" and the URL above and below the number. Your runner is cute but he doesn't do it for us. Not really sure why not... think maybe he looks to be struggling too much.
thanks!

Hi Nathan;
Thanks for re-working your idea. We like how you've shortened the runner's arms, they look better now. Would like to see legs slightly modified but that can come later.
This is a very artistic design and we like the style, but we're really looking for the layout as displayed above.
We like your runner the most so far and would like to see him worked into the design concept we've presented. Would you be willing to do that? If so, we'd probably just need to tweak the legs slightly and we're ready to go to screenprinting.
thanks!

Hi Nathan;
Thanks, but that is not what we're seeking. I've posted the layout we'd like and Paula's concept is a good example. The text in your design is perfect but the race number is not how we'd like it. It should read Boston at the top, 2005 in the middle (the "race number") and the runners underneath it.
I've taken the liberty of modifying your latest concept to the layout we're seeking. I made the number rectangular w/ pin holes (adding pins is beyond my capabilities), added the "Boston 2005" and placed the runners under it. Can you design it this way?
Thanks!

Hello Nathan;
Thanks for making the changes. I am sorry for the long delay in responding; I had extensive surgery on my hand and considered :confused: abandoning this project. However, it's back on the to-do list!
We still prefer your runner best but your design is lacking some specific details that are important to us:
1. Please note the shape of the number. It's rectangular, not square. Please refer to my example (post #25) or Castell's latest designs for a perfect example.
2. The number should have holes in all 4 corners. Please refer to Castell's latest designs for a perfect example. Again, please see Castell's design.
3. The number's corners should be rounded, but not as much as in your design. For reference, we think slightly less rounded than the number in Castell's design.
4. The number should appear "pinned on" to the shirt w/ little safety pins. Please refer to the photo in my original post.
5. Please note the relative size of the "Boston 2005" to the number and runners below it. The text should take up 50-60% of the number area. Please refer to my example (post #25) or Paula's latest design for reference.
While numerous, I believe these are simple tweaks; hopefully you are happy to make them for us. The text of the design is not important b/c we can always change that ourselves. In fact, we've already ditched "Training for:" and may use "I was there..." or perhaps even nothing at all. (suggestions, anyone?)
If you can make these changes and post along w/ an enlarged version of the runner (again, like Castell did! :)) then I think we'll be ready to wrap this up and send it to the silkscreeners.
Thanks!
-Alain

BTW - We prefer to use 3 runners in the design, somewhat staggered as in post #25.

Hi Nathan;
Thanks for updating. There are still a few tweaks to be made, I'll list:
1. The race number is too rectangular now. Width/height specs are 1.2 to 1... ie, if the height is 100pixels, the width is 120pixels. Can you adjust to these specs, please?
2. Corners are too rounded; please make them like this:
http://visualadv.net/boston1.gif
3. The pins should all be uniform size (relative size similar to the top, right pin in your example) and angled as they are when the number is pinned to your shirt, similar to my image below and the lower right pin in your example.
http://www.bostonrunner.com/images/number_pin.gif
4. The size of the "Boston 2005" is wrong; please refer to my post from Thursday. "The text should take up 50-60% of the number area. Please refer to my example (post #25) or Paula's latest design for reference." In your image, it's about 30%. Also, text should be same font and format as my example below
5. The runners should all be the same size. By "staggered," I mean the first and third runner at equal level, middle runner slightly lower so they can all be spaced closer together. See my earlier image below:
http://www.bostonrunner.com/images/nathan_jaf.gif
Thanks, looking forward to the finished product!

Here's a rough draft of how we want the shirt design to look.
This draft can serve as a reference for relative size and placement in the final design.
We would like the number to have corners that are slightly more rounded and there should be pins in all four corners as well. Please refer to previous post #36 for more details.
We need this design finalized today.
thanks!

Hi Nathan;
It's nice to hear from you again. :yawn:
As far as I know, you are the "winner" of the "contest." Indeed, the final design is based on your work, which was based on the art that I provided to you. You did a great job getting the project started but we would never have met deadline were it not for Jason's finishing touches.
Thanks for your contribution to the project.
