(Admin code added by Michael - 5V6648138, G4236783T)
Hi everyone,
It's about time for me to start a new project :-)
I started/own/administer a website called afghanchat.com (http://www.afghanchat.com). It has more than 11.000 members and currently about 600.000 pageviews a month.
The audience is between 15 and 35 years old, so I don't really consider it a kids-website as people discuss all kind of stuff on that website, incl. politics.
The website is based on a Content-Management-System named "PHP-Nuke" (http://www.phpnuke.org), and I modified the standard theme heavily to make it look less like a typical PHP-Nuke website.
(This is a typical PHP-Nuke website: http://www.nukecops.com/)
As you can see PHP-Nuke based websites consist of blocks (on the left or right), e.g.: Login-Block, Survey-Block, Who's-Online-Block etc. and modules (the middle area), e.g. Forum-Module, Contact-Module, News-Module etc..
What I would like to have is a redesign of the homepage and the news-page. I also need to have a guideline on how to format table-headers, texts and how to design buttons (I also need a template for those).
The Private-Messages-section and the Forum should NOT be redesigned. The Forum is based on phpBB and it would take too long to redesign that one as well.
The top bar (where the banners, the logo and the main navigation is) should also be redesigned.
People keep complaining about the site being "too blue" and I want to have it more colourful, just like the advertising banners. It should look attractive to the website's young audience but also not too "childish" for the older ones.
So one of the main goals is, to get rid of the blue-only style and make the site more colourful.
A keypoint is the design of the blocks, e.g. the "User Info"-block on the right side of the screen. If you take a look at that you will see that they all contain a header (e.g. "User Info") and a content part. This block-template should also be redesigned to fit into the new design and to make the site look even less like a typical PHP-Nuke website.
If you can make the blocks blend into the site or make them not look like PHP-Nuke-blocks at all then that'd be the best solution!
Please keep in mind that this is a redesign that has to stick to certain restrictions imposed on us by the CMS-system. This is not a "complete new project". It's more like a heavy brush-up on the current design.
I do NOT need HTML-pages!
I only need the PSDs that I (as a non-graphics guy) should be able to cut into pieces, retrieve colours etc. AND a .CSS-file that contains the definition of the fonts and colours.
Please don't use fonts that are available on MAC-only or PC-only. You CAN concentrate on PC-users if you have found a really nice font but in that case I need to know which font to use for MAC-users.
Please feel free to ask any questions that you might have :-)
And: please give me feedback if you're willing to join + the date when you will join.
Thanks,
Rias

Hello :)
Just wanted to show you the beginning of my design. Do you like it? Am I moving in right direction - I mean, shall I continue with the style and so on?
Rias, do you require a header graphic?
rsherzad
03-16-2005, 12:23 PM
Hi Luc,
Thank you very much for joining :-)
Please see my comments below to get an answer for your question.
Aliska,
It's afghanchat.com, not afghanchart.com :-)
It's "Private Messages" not "Privet Messages" :-)
It's "Afghan Radio" not "Afgan Radio" :-)
It's "Afghan music" not "Afgan Music" :-)
Other than that: the design looks nice, you understood the concept of blocks and modules that puts constraints upon the design! :-)
Some feedback:
a) Please try a different green and red tone, maybe a softer one.
b) I would like to have a header graphic but if you come up with a really nice concept that doesn't allow header graphics in order to gain space then you can skip the header graphic.
c) I'm not really into the "Welcome to afghanchat.com", "Afghan Music" and "Latest Discussion" headers. They look too plain. Can you try something different?
d) I do need space for two 468x60 banners and (preferrably) some space for a banner on the side where you see the GoogleAds now (take a look at the right column of afghanchat.com).
e) Please get rid of those grayish colours. I think they don't match the red/green style and they look very pale. Can you try something different with that instead?
f) Please don't modify the current afghanchat.com logo. You can take out the old man though, but please use the afghanchat.com text as it is now. Reason: afghanshop.com is starting soon (after the competition for the redesign on this site) and will use a similar logo... for branding purposes...
Thank you very much. I think for the first shot this was going into a good direction :-)

Hi Brian,
1)
The header graphic looks really nice, especially the left part. Please keep that left part as it is.
The right part of the header graphic doesn't really say anything to me, as it doesn't really remind me of Afghanistan. Can you use something different for that right part?
2)
The green and orange colours don't really fit the overall design. Can you use something different?
3)
I'm not really into the gray colours in the blocks and the spacing between the blocks. The header of each block ("Search", "Members Login" etc.) shouldn't have a shadow and should be stretched along the full width of each block.
There should be little to no spacing between blocks.
4)
Maybe you can try a more uniform colour scheme? Maybe you can try using a more lively/"happy" colour for the header graphic?
5)
The afghanchat-Logo should be at a prominent place in the upper part of the page.
Salam Imad,
1)
Please use the original logo.
2)
Having the header graphic and the logo on the same line is a very good idea! It will save some space.
I'm not really into the design of the header graphic, especially that "glowing" and the "redish"-colours are kind of distracting. Can you try something different? I do prefer header graphics whose parts are blending into each other as in Brian's design or on the current header graphic on http://www.afghanchat.com.
3)
I do like the clean design of the lower part!
4)
I'm not really into the red/gray-style of the Section-headers ("Afghan Music", "Latest Discussion"). Can you think of something different?
5)
You can, as Aliska did, take the "Member Login"-Block out and put it's contents (Username / Passwort / Login-Button) into the top header bar to save some space.
6)
Just to mention the main idea I have for your design again: can you try a different colour-scheme and not the "redish-"one?
Hi Aliska,
1)
Please make the following corrections, as they're a little distracting when I try to judge the design:
It's "Private Messages" not "Privet Messages" :-)
It's "Afghan Radio" not "Afgan Radio" :-)
It's "Afghan music" not "Afgan Music" :-)
2)
The header graphic is nicely designed, but I think I have found two mistakes:
a) The flag is the turkish flag and not the current Afghan flag :-)
b) I'm not sure about the mosque, is it Afghanistan-related?
3)
The bird is really nice, it stands out from the whole header graphic and looks almost threedimensional.
Can you keep that idea, but make the header graphic one colour scheme or reduce the number of colours on that graphic? Right now it looks too colourful.
4)
Please don't put the afghanchat-Logo on the header graphic as it blends into it which makes it almost disappear. The afghanchat-Logo should be at its own prominent place.
5)
The lower parts look nice, I like the idea of having a little graphical symbol next to each block. It should be only one symbol and not a single symbol for each block. This makes the programming more complicated.
The lower part is also too colourful, please reduce the number of colours you used. Currently it's six or seven colour-styles which is too much.
6)
The headers for the section logos should be rectangular ("Welcome to afghanchat.com", "Afghan Music", "Latest Discussions" etc.) and there should be only one icon on each of those header bars. They can be different though as each one of those sections is hand-programmed in contrast to the blocks.
7)
Please take out the two light-gray background graphic from the section/content part (from "Welcome to afghanchat.com" and "Afghan Music").
@Everyone:
The inner content part of the main page ("Welcome to afghanchat.com", "Afghan Music" and "Latest Discussions") should be redesigned as well. Let your creativity flow :-)
Right now you modified the colours and the header bars but not the style of how, e.g., the artists list ("Afghan Music" section) is presented.
Thanks to all of you! :-)

Hi, Rias:)
I've read your comments. Take into it while working on changes:)
About images... gm... I've found hem entering qouery in images search as 'Afghanistan'... Will find smth else... If you have images of mosque or nice flag as I've used for header could you give me a link to download it?
Thanks,

Hi Everyone,
Sorry for the late feedback, I've been busy the past few days.
Wasalam Imad,
The header graphic does look a lot better, although the symbol from the turkish flag within the light gray bars doesn't really belong to Afghanistan :-)
a)
Can you take it out and...
b)
... make the header graphic one coloured?
c)
The images on the graphic do look very nice, although the one Brian used in his first entry (three people) connects more to the people's situation in Afghanistan (restless, fleeing etc.). Can you try to find something like that for the header graphic?
d)
The content part ("Welcome to afghanchat.com", "Afghan Music", "Latest Discussions" + the NEWS-TEXTS!) look very nice on this site: http://www.afgha.com/
They have used a Times New Roman-like font which makes it a lot easier and more comfortable to read news texts. Can you layout the content part according to that idea? I need to see how you think the News-texts should look like as they're an integral part of the site.
e)
The bottom part ("Copyrights 2004 afghanchat", "Account | Private Messages" etc.) shouldn't be there as that's hard to layout with the CMS.
f)
As I said in one of my previous feedback-postings: can you please try to make the site look less like blocks as it does now? The rounded corners and the separating lines/frames should also not be there..
g)
Do you have an idea how to make it look more dynamic, more lively as in Aliskas (too colourful) last design?
h)
Can you make the block and section headers ("Home", "Afghan Music", "Latest Discussions") similar as in Luc's design?
Besides that: that's very good progress, I like it a lot! It's clean, looks professional and nicely designed!
Oh, to answer your question: no, I don't have relatives in Canada. My lastname seems to be very common in Afghanistan :(
Hi Luc,
Sorry for the late feedback, here are some links that I think don't look too bad on a header.
http://www.loc.gov/rr/international/amed/images/afghanistan.jpg
http://alfatihoun.edaama.org/Fichiers/Afghanistan/Country/web/images/afghan1.jpg
http://kusmos.phsx.ukans.edu/~melott/buddha.jpg
http://alfatihoun.edaama.org/Fichiers/Afghanistan/Country/web/Afghanistan%20country.htm
They can/should also be used by the other designers, taking part in this competition, if you need material to work with...
I would like the header to be affiliated with Afghanistan and the situation there. Maybe with old people on it, praying (fourth link), deserts, mountains, families, children etc..
I'm not really into the design, starting with the overall colouring. Can you try something totally different, maybe even break out of the typical PHPNuke-design?
Many thanks to all of you!
Greetings, Rias
Thanks for the honest feedback. I will try something else. Can you tell me any style that appeals to you?

Sorry for the delay, I've been out of town for a week...
Hi Luc,
The top banner looks good, except that the middle part (with the two camels) looks too "spooky". Can you change that to something else, something lighter?
The logo should not be in the middle of the banner, but on the left. Therefore the login-box should be put on the right.
The blue header graphics look too technological, like a computer-related website.
The lower part with the content still looks like a PHPNuke website with it's blocks and modules. As I wrote before in previous posts I would like to get away from that style.
Thank you very much!
Rias
I understand you want to getaway from the 3 columns, is that correct? Here's another attempt.

Hi everyone,
I've been looking around for design ideas for afghanchat.com as the current designs are not 100% what I'm looking for.
First of all: Thank you very much, Luc! The design you made comes pretty close to something that I would like to see on afghanchat.com.
In order to give you an idea (as it's hard to describes one's thoughts/"feelings" for a certain design style) I checked out templatemonster.com and ran across this design that I like very much:
http://www.templatemonster.com/website-templates/3995.html
I'm aware of the fact that I have to buy this design prior to using it on my website.
Can you guys make an afghanchat.com-customized version of that templatemonster.com-design? I like pretty much everything about the design - all I need to see is what it would look like branded as afghanchat.com-related.
Of course, if I choose to use that design I will obtain the rights to it. Please apply the information that I gave you up to now regarding what needs to be on the front page ("Afghan Music", "News" etc.).
I would love to see work from you, Luc, and Imad on this new idea. I will also increase the prize to $350 as you guys have invested quite some time on it up to now.
Thank you very much!

Salam Imad!
Thank you very much for the quick response, I really appreciate that :-)
As a quick and general feeeback: can you try to make a total "copy" of that templatemonster.com design (and of course brand it as afghanchat.com with the requirments I mentioned)?
Meaning: "City Portal" should be "afghanchat.com" and the other elements should be replaced by elements that need to be on the front page of the new afghanchat.com design.
Thank you very much!
Maasalam, Rias
Rias,
I updated your project title to include the increase in funds... have you taken care of the addition you mentioned yet? If not, here is the link to add them: http://www.designoutpost.com/content/view/24/42/1/1/
With that said, I don't think asking the designers to duplicate the design at template monster is going to work.
However, I do think if you purchase the design, then post a jpg of the mockup here to the site (or the PSD) that we can brand it for you....
I have asked the DO Admins to make sure that I am stating this correctly :)
Michael
04-26-2005, 08:32 AM
Yes Lori is correct, I would suggest you purchasing the design and then making the PSD file available to the designers to brand.
I will allow the designers who are interested in the project to contact you and request the file.
Thanks
rsherzad
04-26-2005, 08:45 AM
Hi,
I'm not sure if I understood everything correctly, so I'll just ask again:
I want afghanchat.com to look like that templatemonster.com design. Before I purchase that design I would like to see what it would look like. If I like the designers' proposal(s) I will make the purchase at templatemonster.com and the designer can finish the other page(s). If I don't like the designers' proposals and decide to go for a different approach then I will not use any templatemonster.com design (and would save money).
If that, in your opinion, goes against any copyright/site rules (which I don't think would) then of course I will purchase the rights to the design prior to a designer using it. Admin/Mods, please give me feedback on that :-)
Many Greetings,
Rias
P.S.: When I get home tonight I will also make the additional payment of $100.
Rias,
I edited the title back to the original rate until I get word from the admins on the additional funding ;)
I am sure that the admins will correct me if I am mistaken, but yes, you will have to purchase that PSD first. There would be copyright issues (and needless work preformed) to create that design. It is owned by TM, and therefore they hold the copyright, so asking a team member here to create it prior to purchase would be a problem.
Second, the creation of the design by a team member would be uneeded work done since there is a psd of the design provided by TM on purchase.
If instead you are not after that exact design, but something along the lines of it, then there would be no further problems as the designers can create a custom design with the TM design in mind - there is no copyright issue in that.
We just can't make a complete copy without you having licensed right to use that design.

Hi Lori,
Thanks for the quick feedback!
Now I do understand your comments and I fully agree!
You're also right about that PSD-thing - it'll make it easier for the designers to have that one.
I will take care of the design purchase on templatemonster.com and the +$100 funding within the next 3-4 hours and post all necessary information for the designers to use/download.
Many thanks again,

05-02-2005, 11:14 AM
Salam Imad,
The modifications I need are:
1. The red/white logo is too violent/crude. It looks like it's burning. Can you make it more lighter and make it not stand out too much?
2. The header is too blue. I would like to get rid of too much blue in the header as I wrote in one of my first postings. I also don't like the square-like background of the header, please make the different parts blend into each other seamlessly.
The header should also resemble the original header of the original templatemonster.com design. It's very light, doesn't look too "overcrowded". Can you think of something lighter, something that still fits into the new design and has something to do with Afghanistan?
3. The main menu below the logo should have a 7th line (actually it should be the first line) that says "Account". So it's 7 items in that list.
4. The flags where you can switch the languages are missing. Please put them all way at the right corner in the upper part where it says "Main Page". Those two little gray icons can be removed.
5. Under "Afghan artists" and "Afghan Music" you have two little graphics. One is that chinese looking guy and the other one a musical symbol. Please put portraits (not pale, not blueish but regular colours) of "Ahmad Zahir" and "Abdullah Muqurai" there. You can find them here:
http://www.rockol.it/img/foto/AhmadZahir.jpg
http://www.mastana.net/music_mp3_files/Abdullah%20Muqurai/Armani%20tapey/_folderOpenImage.gif
6. I need a suggestion on where to put the banner. Can you make an example of where you think the banner should be put without messing up the design?
I think one more round of changes might come up when you have finished the above changes.
Thanks for now :-)
@Admin/Mod: as I have already transferred the additional funds of $100, please modify the subject of this competition accordingly. The complete sum of $350 should go to "lebdesign" upon completion of the project.

Salam again,
Yes, we're getting there :-)
1.
The logo now looks too pale. That embossed (bevelled?) style is not really catching. Can you try something else?
2.
a) The banner looks "too full", too many objects in there. Can you remove 1 or 2 of them?
b) Can you also remove that checkered/square-like style and make the elements blend into each other without any lines and colour-differences inbetween?
c) Can you remove that yellow part to the left of the banner? It doesn't match the rest.
3. - 6.: Great! :-)
7.
As for the remaining pages I will need designs for the following pages:
"Account / Sign-Up", comes before the login (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Your_Account)
"Account / Overview", comes up after the login (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Your_Account)
"Your Info" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Your_Account&op=edituser)
"Qur'an" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Quran)
"Topics" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/topics.html)
"Top 10" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/top.html) "Contact" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Feedback)
"Read News" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/article-3622--0-0.html)

"Advertising" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Advertising)

"Search results" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Search)
"Afghan Radio" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=AfghanRadio)
You need to register for an account before you can view some of the pages.
a) Can you make a design for those pages as well?
b) How much would each additional page cost?
c) Can you make a proposal for a single page and a "complete package"?

Salam Imad,
Yes, these are the open points that I'm not really satisfied with yet:
1.
I'm still not into what the logo looks like. Now the background is too dark/dirty-looking. Can you try something else?
2.
Can you remove that checkered/square-like style and make the elements blend into each other without any lines and colour-differences inbetween?
3.

"Account / Overview", comes up after the login (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Your_Account)
"Your Info" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.p...unt&op=edituser)
"Qur'an" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Quran)
"Topics" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/topics.html)
"Top 10" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/top.html) "Contact" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Feedback)
"Read News" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/article-3622--0-0.html)
"Links" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/links.html)
"FAQ" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/faq.html)
"Advertising" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Advertising)
"Surveys" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Surveys)
"Search results" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=Search)
"Afghan Radio" (Link: http://www.afghanchat.com/modules.php?name=AfghanRadio)
You need to register for an account before you can view some of the pages.
a) Can you make a design for those pages as well?
b) How much would each additional page cost?
c) Can you make a proposal for a single page and a "complete package"?

Salam,
Here are the other revisions ;). How does 25/page sound. Also im not sure what you mean by single/complete page. Let me know other changes you need.

Salam again,
1.
This logo looks better, but it's too pale now. Can you give it another try, preferably while designing the other pages (see comment #3 first) so we can move on faster?
2.
The banner looks better now, but there is still that checkered style. For instance: look at the mosque in the middle of the banner. The upper part of the mosque (starting from the middle of the door) has a darker colour and the lower part has a lighter colour. Can you remove this colour difference from the banner?
3.
I meant: "complete package", not "complete page" lol
Ok, so you're asking for USD 25 for one page. How much would you charge if I ask you to have all 13 subpages designed? USD 325 or can you give me a discount?
(Sorry, that's my "Afghan bazaar" mentality but I think yours should be similar so you can probably handle it ;-))

Salam,
Great - USD 600 for the complete thing! :-)
I will transfer the additional funds of USD 250 today and ask the Admin to modify the subject line accordingly.
So let's have the home page finished asap so I can start the implementation.

Salam,
Yess, the banner looks great! :-)
Just as you said: now only the logo needs to be changed. Can you do that while you're working on the subpages?
Can you give me an estimation on when you the subpages could be finished?

Sama,
Would you like me to start doing the subpages in PSDs or should I send you the PSD and wait for you to code it. Let me know. After it should take long to finish them all.

Salam,
Please send me the first PSD (homepage). The logo can still be replaced at a later time when it's finished. While I'm coding the homepage you can work on the subpages.
Is that ok with you?

Salam,
I downloaded the file. Thanks a bunch! :-)
But: when opening the file I got the message "Some text layers contain fonts that are missing. These layers will need to have the missing fonts replaced before they can be used for vector based output."

Salam,
Link removed. Im currently working on your subpages. It says that because I believe you dont have the fonts on the fonts folder. The zip that you got from TM has some fonts that you have to put in your fonts folder :)

Hi Tonya,
Yes, I know. I'm running a 10.000+ members community myself (afghanchat.com) :-)
I just didn't see that I received a PM because the notification was turned off and no pop-ups came up :-)
Thanks & Many Greetings :-)
