View Full Version : [Project Complete] Diesel company logo - $325

(Admin code added by Palmer - 0S4656214)

We need a new logo ASAP for our company, www.dieselserviceandsupply.com. We primarily buy and sell industrial diesel engines and large backup power generators (for things like mining operations, construction projects, buildings, large data centers, etc.). Prize is $325. Deadline is coming up quick: 4/26/05.

The name is:
Diesel Service & Supply, Inc.

We would like the full name included in the logo (including the Inc.) if possible, but we are open to seeing a few versions without that. Regardless, the focus should be on "DIESEL", since we don’t do as much with the service side of the business anymore, it’s primarily just selling diesel engines and diesel powered generators.

The logo should project the following qualities:

1. Industrial
2. High-Strength
3. Long-Lasting
3. Mix of modern and traditional styling
4. Professional

The logo design can be done with or without a logomark, open to creativity there. Preferably simple, but sharp looking - nothing too complicated. It will serve as the foundation for a new website design, but also be used in business cards and incorporated into all corporate communications. Please take all this into consideration while designing.

NOTE (about old logo):
We are hoping to get something entirely new, but if possible we would also like to see a version of our existing logo recreated. Unfortunately, we currently do not have any good digital formats of that so it would have to be created from scratch. The company has been in business for over 23 years and has been using that logo for the last five so we may also be open to continuing forward with a touched up version of the existing logo, or some type of play off of it (like a different font for the Diesel, different colors, etc). Don’t focus on that though, just another option for some to consider.

COLORS:
As for colors, try to keep it simple, looking for a 2 color design (might consider 3), but must also look good in black and white. RGB, CMYK & B/W versions need to be provided. Would like to get a feel for how it can look on a business card and/or site if possible, but not required.

FORMAT:
The logo needs to be in Vector format. Will also need a TIF...large, medium & small version. If you can supply PNG and PSD as well that would be ideal.

Other than that, be creative and have fun.

Thanks!

Matt

During the designing process I took extra time to create a mark that is easy to brand and market. Giving that, I hereby provide a sample of the business cards and a letterhead, so that you get a touch of the real strength of the mark.

*There can be many other compositions with this general idea... notice that this is just a sample.

Wow, great job everyone! Thanks for the quick entries. We really like the variety so keep that coming if possible, but here's some thoughts on the inital designs:

Tyler:
Concept1-1- like the second font a lot. If you can try that, but change the background to blue that’d be great. Love the creativity with the swooshing exhaust effect, just not sure about that one overall yet.

Concept 1-2- this one has some great potential. The only part I’m unsure of is there’s something about the swoosh reminding me of FTD Flowers or something, more so than industrial diesel engines and/or power generation. Maybe play with it just a bit…

Eziey:
Glad to see you made it, was definitely looking forward to your entries!

Eziey1- uncanny how similar this is to our other branded name located at www.generatorsource.com. I’m not sure if we want that same exact look, but you may as well try that one with a yellow S and similar affect in the border.

Eziey2- like the look but not sure about that one yet

Eziey3- really like the look of this one. However, can you maybe try it with a few other color combinations, like blue and green, or blue and yellow, perhaps try gray or black in the Service & Supply font.

Castell:
Concept1 – We weren’t totally sure about the corroding D affect at first, but I think it’s growing on everyone. If you could maybe try the Diesel in dark blue with the same black underneath, or perhaps one with blue and gray or some other colors also that’d be great.

These are all great entries so far, thanks for your efforts. Looking forward to seeing some revisions and hope to get at least a few more options and concepts to consider as well!

Thx - Matt

;) hey there, Matt

You are suggestions are very strong. Especially the blue and gray combination.
I think that the gray can actually be silver on print, provinding you with a very
distinctive look either for your web usage and also for the stationery materials.

Thank you for the feedback and for your time.

Alright, what can I say, this board has some serious talent! Keep the designs and new concepts coming if possible, but specific comments for each again below:

Tonya – great job, love how it’s simple but strong. Also really like how you’ve electrocuted the D, very cool. It’s great as is frankly, but can you also try it with a few minor variations, perhaps a slightly different version of that electrocuted effect, or maybe one with all caps for the word Diesel (just to compare)?

Castell- like the blue and potential integration of silver, but could go for a darker blue, as opposed to the link-colored blue. Also, while the disintegrating effect is cool, if possible can you try some type of other formatting on the D and/or Diesel as well? Since we deal in heavy duty machinery, I wouldn't want to have the company brand be associated with something that looks like it’s falling apart.

Eziey – thanks for the color variations, but after looking at it more, not sure if that font formatting is really getting the heavy-duty industrial feel we’re after. Love to see something else from you if possible though, you know I really like your work…

Tyler – just one other note about C1-2. Would like to see that same smoke effect in a couple different fonts if possible.

Deanna – thanks for the entry. However, I think it’s a bit busier than we’d like it to be, and that font is making me wobble. Also not so sure about the logomark. If we were to include a logomark I’d like to keep it a bit more simple or at least play directly off of a big engine or generator in some fashion (engine or genset outline, parts, gears, whatever really).

Thanks again to everyone for all your energy and effort. At this point we definitely like a number of these, but we’re still open to all possibilities so keep them coming… Regards - Matt.

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful submissions, looks like you are really going to make this difficult with so many good options to choose from. I apologize for not getting back with comments sooner, but we needed to have an office review of these this morning. At this point, I would like to let everyone know that we are planning to present most of these to the company president sometime on Tuesday morning. We hope to be able to announce a winner shortly after that. For now, a few more specific comments below:

Tonya – if it would be possible to see 22C with a black font and a “construction yellow” colored lightning bolt that’d be great (open to other yellows as well but thought that might be appropriate). Also be nice to see darker blue with a yellow of some sort as well, the b/w version is sweet but the gray and blue are a bit soft.

Eziey – nice job, lots of comments on a number of your entries. 17 is a favorite but it does kind of remind me of the MLB.com logo where you can’t help but look at the shadowed area. Is that supposed to be something in particular inside the D? Also, if you can try#20 with a few minor modifications to the fan (maybe color, perhaps a more defined D, or something like that) that’d be great.

Tyler – still like to see you try a few variations on C1-2 (with the little blue float above the D) is possible. If there’s anyway you can try to get that to convey more of a power feel as opposed to diesel exhaust or wave action love to see it.

Castell – nice work on a number of those, like the gear integration a lot, should be fine to present a few of yours as is.

Moz – thanks for the chrome effect. Like two and three both, but not sure we want to be dealing with that effect on all printed stuff, also looses some punch in b/w a bit.

Jason – thx for the entry, like the simplicity, but I think the stretched I is a bit funky and not really conveying the industrial image we need.

Unorthodox – nice entries for sure, but probably a little more high-tech then we’re after. Also not sure about the colors. If you want to try incorporating something more industrial and/or power-like into them more definitely be interested in seeing them.

Raja – thanks for the great entries. Definitely like aspects of both but not sure about the colors, and not sure about all the space 31 is taking up horizontally. In #28 (the third option), if you could try that on white with some other colors that’d be great (maybe that blue with that same color, or just black in company name with same color gears). The gear in the lower right of that one also looks a bit like a jellyfish or something so you can drop that. If you have any other thoughts on a way to emphasize power and/or electricity into either in some additional or slightly different fashion love to see that as well.

Thanks again to everyone for all your time and energy. If you can get any revisions or new entries in by the end of the day or later this evening they will definitely make the cut for what should hopefully be a final review mtg in the morning. Good luck and you should be hearing from me sometime on Tuesday with a decision.

Best Regards - Matt

Sorry, left a few designers out, here’s a couple additional comments:

Fabian – thx for the entry, but not sure about the purple, and think it’s a bit too vertical overall. Also not sure if the logomark helps to capture the industrial power generation feel we’re looking for (to emphasize the diesel engine powered backup generators we sell).

Davegk – like some of the ideas behind those, but they’re a bit too boxy. Accomplishes the industrial image, but looks a bit more like an oil refinery or something. If you want to go back to the drawing board and incorporate something totally different that focuses more on the industrial backup power and/or electricity component a bit more feel free to do so. Mostly thinking some type of formatting to the D or the word Diesel...

Thx - Matt

Hey Mark, sorry about leaving you out like that. Being in the middle of the page I guess I accidently scrolled passed you when typing the feedback out. As for your design, while we like the potential behind somehow conveying the electrical component into the logo, it just felt a bit too much like a happy sunshine element more than industrial diesel power. If you have any other ideas for playing off that theme (industrial diesel power and/or industrial engines) in another fashion, feel free to have at it again. Thx - Matt

Hello Designers. I just wanted to thank everyone here again for the time and energy you have poured into our project, we really appreciate it. This has been an incredibly difficult decision. I had hoped we would fall in love with a single design and have an easy time of it, but it turns out there are things we like about just about every entry.

Unfortunately, we need to move forward and make a selection. After reviewing everything with the company president this morning, at this time I would like to narrow the contest down to three finalists, propose a few more minor edits, and extend the deadline to the end of the day on 4/28.

What I'd like each of the finalists to do is make some minor changes based on the comments below, after that we should hopefully be able to make a final decision and declare a winner.

The three we’ve narrowed it down to are: Tonya, Raja, and Eziey

Tonya – we would like to see the Diesel in #44 in a dark blue font, and a version with all the fonts in that one also in dark blue. Also like to see a round of those new versions in all caps (so one set with lowercase and one caps).

Raja – if you can take #28 (third option) and try to create a version of that which uses a white background, dark blue font for the DIESEL, and a construction yellow for the gear/lines logomark that’d be great. Also change the “and” in “Service and Supply, Inc.” to &. We would like to see that in b/w as well.

Eziey – If you can take #20 and change the color of the fan to be closer to construction yellow and/or a slightly brighter yellow that’d be great. May need to try it with a blue hairline outlining it as well. And, if you have any other thoughts on incorporating electricity into that font (and removing the fan altogether), please feel free to take a shot.

We are looking forward to seeing your revisions and making a selection. Please let me know if you have any questions, or if any of the three finalists would rather not submit modifications. Thanks again to all…

Thanks for the quick turnround from the finalists on those changes! We will try to review all later today, but I did have one quick request for Tonya.

Tonya - can you please try #44B in a blue font as well (w/o the box but still keep the yellow highliting below it)? That's a leading candidate right now. Also like to see a brighter shade of yellow for the shaded area on that one as well for comparison.

Raja and Eziey - nice job, if I get anymore comments about your designs I'll post them right away. Otherwise ,be back with some final final edits and/or a decision soon...

Thx - Matt

PS. Adrian, thanks for the nice entries. However, at this point we have narrowed it down to three finalists and should be declaring a winner from those shortly.

Okay, after much tossing and turning, review and debate, a winner has finally been chosen. Tonya’s design in post #54 is the foundation we are looking for in a logo. I would like to thank everyone here one last time for all your hard work and creativity, there were truly a number of designs that I feel would have served the company very well. Unfortunately, there can be only one...

Tonya, having never done this before, not sure what I need to do now to move the thread to the revisions forum? I think we’ll just need a few minor color variations and what not to get to the final final. I didn’t see the link for 'A Designer has been chosen' so if you could help me out with that I’d appreciate it.

Thanks again to everyone!

Hi Tonya. Apologize for the long msg, just kept growing. I'll try not to be too much of a pain here, but definitely hoping to get the coloring just right and make sure we ultimately end up with something we can use in a variety of places. This logo will most likely be used on a new website, new business cards, in print ads, word/excel files, on tradeshow graphics, white hats, possibly on a couple of banana yellow race cars, maybe the door of a dark blue tow truck, in emails, and who knows what else. Therefore, I need to make sure we get all the details ironed out and also make sure we ultimately have everything we need for all those applications so please keep that in mind.

I think the main thing at this point is getting the blue and yellow combination just right. The current blue you have in 54B is very dark, almost black on many monitors or when printed and viewed in medium light conditions. Therefore, if you could try going up the scale into lighter shades of blue to start that'd be great. In your avatar/icon next to your name you have a light blue that fades to a dark blue. Thinking maybe something close to the darkest blue you have on that, but probably easiest to just start from the dark that's on 54B now and work towards lighter on a number of versions (use the same yellow on those though).

However, we'd also be curious to see what an even lighter shade or two of yellow might look like on a few additional versions as well. The little light bulb or smiley Post Icons below this form have a nice light yellow that might be worth trying even. If you can just play with it and see that'd be great.

If possible, we'd also like to see what it might look like if you took 54B, with a little lighter blue, and tried the Service & Supply, Inc. in white. Might not work, but curious to see.

Also, like to see what a version would look like with a thin blue hairline around the shaded yellow area. I guess I'm just wondering if we go with the lower left b/w version (the one with the small box), if we should stay consistent with the color version and do the same outlining? If you have any thoughts on that let me know, otherwise let's just see how it looks on one.

And, not sure if we'll need this, but we'd also like to see how everything might look if we had a mostly white version for use on a dark colored background (like a dark blue). If you could try that just to see how the inverted all white setup would look in that situation that'd be great.

Sorry to ramble, I just wanted to try and make sure you had everything needed to get us closer to knocking this out so we can both move on. If you can take your best shot at the propsed edits in the near future we would really appreciate it. Of course, if you have any questions just let me know and I'll try to get right back to you. Looking forward to seeing your revisions sometime soon!

Thx Again - Matt

Hi Matt

Don't worry, I think I followed everything ;) I'll put together some differnt choices for you.

In the end I'll be providing you vector artwork in CMYK color, Pantone color and black and white. And I can include some extras, like a version with colors reversed and a version with a thin border around the "service and supply" box. That way you'd be covered no matter what background you put the logo on.

I'll probably post some alternate samples later tonight.

Tonya

I've got a lot for you to look at here. Grouping #8 below is mainly about color choices. There are 5 different blules and 4 different yellows (the first two use the yellow from 54B). If you think you like a specific yellow and/or blue from these, I can swap the colors around to show you how the combo would look. I also did some with a thin border around the box.

This grouping here is just showing some of the different ways the logo colors can be used. I've used the same color combo for all the blues and yellows though (it's the blue from C in the previous post and the yellow from A & B).

mstencel
04-28-2005, 12:28 PM
Hi Tonya, thanks for jumping on those so quickly. Talked with everyone a few moments ago and we're thinking if you take the blue from diesel #8B, and apply the yellow and outlined box from #8D, that should hopefully get us there. We also really like the way it looks on black with the white font, very cool! Yellow and blue as well, I'm getting psyched to start getting this thing into production...

On a different note, will you be able to give us the files in any other format other than the vector CMYK? I know we need that for all the professional print jobs, but it would be ideal for our own internal use if we could get the final logo in a small, medium and large tif image, at least one PSD or PNG if possible, and a few versions of gif or jpgs.

Either way, if you could try that one combination above I'm hoping that will just about get us wrapped up.

Thx - Matt

Tonya

Hi Matt

I'm glad you found a color combo you like. For final approval, here it is:

http://homepage.mac.com/tonyagoodnow/graphic_files/diesel/diesel10.gif

My standard logo package includes Adobe Illustrator vector artork in .ai and .eps formats, high resolution JPEG and a selection of low resolution GIFs and JPEGs for web use. Adding in some TIFFs, PNGs and PSD is not problem.

In additon to CMYK, you'll also be getting Pantone (PMS) color, and black and white. So you'll be set for any situation. :)

Just let me know if you're set on this combo now that you have a chance to see it put together. Once you give me the go-ahead, I'll begin preparing the final files.
