Hi Everyone,

Having always had a great experience here at Design Outpost, I’m back again!

I need a logo for a product called "Kid’s College". This is an online educational service that teaches math and language arts skills. Kids answer educational questions and if they get them correct they get to take a turn at a sport (baseball, football, soccer, basketball, and volleyball).

The current logo can be viewed in the center of this page: http://www.kclogin.com

The product is being entirely rewritten for the upcoming school year to be much more cool, 3D looking, and contemporary. The logo needs to be redone in a compatible style. In terms of style think "Spy Kids" and EA Sports videogames.

The additional phrase "Learning System" will sometimes appear next to the logo, so I need to see that as well.

Here are some screen captures of the new version of the game:

http://www.trylonix.com/kc2005/shot1.jpg
http://www.trylonix.com/kc2005/shot2.jpg

The LOGO should reflect the style described above, perhaps consisting of very 3D-looking text. It could also include some element that reflects the idea of sports, movement, action, and fun. (But I don’t want actual balls or literal symbols of specific sports.)

Here are some references:

http:://www.trylonix.com/kc2005/Ref4.jpg (http://www.trylonix.com/kc2005/Ref4.jpg)

The deadline for this contest is May 6th.

I’m looking forward to some great submissions. Good luck everyone!

Bojan,

Thanks for jumping in and kicking off the competition!

Of these choices, I like the bottom blue/red one best. The slanted font gives a nice feeling of speed. A couple of issues with it:

- The three bars to the left/right of "KID'S" are a good idea, but on the right side I think they mirror the "E" in college too much. Maybe it would work better if the words were separated with a bit of white space?

- The amount of black "negative space" is distracting. This is especially true beneath the apostrophe and above the two "L"s.

Maybe some kind of swoop could be added around the text to add impact.

Feel free to do another round on this one and/or give me some other concepts.

Best,

Barton

Hi here would be 2 new versions of first proposal. Now clearer and second one even more dynamic... You'll notice that I altered color scheme a bit to make it easier to read/accept

Third one is a competely new logo. This one is, truly, more sophisticated and still is a nice alternative. I like it's style better than first while first got's the Force :)

Bojan,

Thanks for these revisions.

"KidsCollege3" is too sophisticated/soft for the application.

I like the font treatment in "KidsCollege2", but the blue bars still don't quite work for me. Can you keep the text the same but try something other than the bars?

Thanks,

Barton

Hi Barton,

I gave it a serious thought and I come up with a symbol kid's would easily identify and like it and that would be rather positive, so I choose star... here are 2 versions and I would really like to know what you think about it... If you do not think it's appropriate I'll try to find another graphics for it

Hi Bojan,

I think the star is a good idea. Can I see a version where the whole thing is not at an angle?

Thanks,

Of course I'd welcome any new designs you want to show me.

Moz,

Thanks for throwing your hat in the ring!

I really like the swoop and star, but think a different font might work better. Something a little less high tech.

Some color variations would also be good to see.

Barton

I'll be back real soon with some type and color changes. To make it easier are there any color combos that you would like to see? Any special effects?

Hey Moz,

For colors, I think black, blue, red, and chrome. Take a look at the first two reference images that I included in my first post.

Thanks!

Dear Eziey,

Your design shows a lot of great style. I like the sense of motion and energy (and the colors), but it feels a little too asymetric to me.

Can you show me some alternatives?

Thanks much!

Eziey,

I really like your "eziey 2" design.

Sometimes the phrase "Learning System" will appear with the logo. Can you show me how that would look?

Hi Moz,

I think the composition of your first entry was much stronger, because of the weight of the font and because of the way the swoop landed on the "C" and "E" in college, instead of going behind it.

Also, I think the new font is too "bookish". I'd like something modern and strong, but just not quite as "star trek" as the one in your first entry. Some possible choices are: Busterboy, SF Intellivised, Eras Bold ITC, Gill Sans Ultra Bold, Impact.

I like the chrome finish, but not for all the elements. Maybe the text should be black with a chrome (or white?) outline, the swoop chrome, and the star a third color.

Thanks for all the effort!

Barton

Hi Paula,

I like what you've done with the text and with the "emblem" behind it.

The "orbit trails" make it look too retro/jetsons, and the question mark doesn't convey the right message.

Feel free to show me revision on this, or something new.

Thanks for the effort!

Barton

Deanna,

Thanks for posting an entry!

I like the concept. Very snazzy. A few requested tweaks:

- Overall it's a bit too busy. Maybe the horizontal lines inside the star contribute to this. Maybe the inside of the star should be solid, a gradient, or something else?

- The orange line that outlines the star conflicts with the "C" in college. Maybe it would help to (1) change the color of the star outline, to be different than the "C", and (2) Move the word "College" a bit to the right.

- I don't mind these colors, but can you do some variations for me? (But always keep the chrome.)

Again, this is a strong starting point.

Barton

Hi DesignGeneral,

Thanks very much for joining this contest.

Your entry doesn't quite convey the excitement of the product. What sets Kid's College apart from other K-12 edicational services is the motivation and excitement delivered by cool 3D sports games (that you get to play when you've answered questions correctly).

I'd welcome some alternatives.

Hi Paula,

I like the top choice of your latest set.

Can I see a version with, (a) the word "College" spaced out a bit more - the letters seem a bit crowded, and (b) The phrase "Learning System" added.

Sometimes the logo will appear with "Learning System" and sometimes not.

Barton

Paula,

Ok, at the risk of being too nit picky, can you (a) move the word "College" a little to the right so it's centered under "Kid's", and (b) change "Learning Systems" to "Learning System" (not plural)

Thanks very much!

Hi Paula,

It's looking really good. One final little thing (I think). The letter "E" in this font looks a bit strange. Is that just the quality of the render?

Best,

Barton

Yes that 'E' is a little funky ,and thats the way it looks.
Attached I replaced the 'E's" with a compatible font.

DesignGeneral,

Hmm...still too soft, I think, for the product. Also, the font choice makes it seem too juvinile.

I appreciate your effort on this, and would welcome any other ideas.

Can I ask you for a few tweaks and variations?

I like to see:

(1) The logo a little bigger

(2) With all parts looking a little more metallic and/or shiny

(3) Some different color variations

One last variation, if you don't mind. Can you take the top version (with the blue oval behind "Kid's College") and replace the green swoop with the orange swoop? (The same orange swoop you have on the bottom version.)

Hi All,

The time has come for me to declare a winner.

First, as usual, I was blown away by the quality of ALL of the submissions. I really appreciate the effort put forward.

In the end, Eziey came up with the logo that best fits the project. (Eziey, I'll send you a private message with my email so we can arrange final delivery.)

Again, my sincere thanks to all participants!

Eziey,

The b/w and gray scale versions look fine. So please email me final files for:

1) Color version, with green swoop on top, blue oval, yellow swoop on bottom

2) Color version, same as above but optimized for display on a black background

3) Black and white version

4) Gray scale version

I'm not sure what tool you used to create the logo, but eps files would be best.
