We have recently aquired a client for whom we need a redesign of their web shop.

Prize: $500
Deadline: 2005-06-23
Material: Main page + product page
Format: PSD


About client

The client is a company called Helse & Kost AS which sells health foods to the norwegian market through their web shop at http://www.helseogkost.no/ (click the menu items Nettbutikk -> Produktoversikt to view the current list of products).

Their main target audiences are men and women in their thirties and fourties.


Reasons for redesign

The problems with the current design are several, including
- It looks unprofessional
- The products are buried too deep in the navigation structure
- The order process has great shortcomings as far as usability goes


Colors and elements

For now, the client wants to keep the existing logo located at their web site. They also like the color green, and would like to use that as the basis of the new design. Regarding the shade of green, they have stated that they don’t want it too pale, but nor too bright (not lime-ish).

Other than this, there’s really not too much to fetch from the current design.

In general, the client would like to integrate pictures of people into the design, and please try to make them as little stock-ish as possible. Children can also be included, as parents often buy health foods for their children.

The company is also concerned with making the statement that they are different from other health foods companies, and would like the design to reflect this. They have been a little vague on exactly how they are different, but I think their main point is that they want their site to be unique when compared with their competitors.


User interface

Attached is the desired user interface to use as the basis of the main page design. Please use it to the extend possible as a lot of thought has been put into it.

There are, however, some elements that should be included that have been left out of the user interface draft. These are:

- The shopping cart (which will only be visible once the user has selected one or more products). I was thinking that it could be placed above the newsletter subscription box in the right column, but if you have a better idea, that’s fine.

- The phrase “Vi feirer 2-års jubileum med nytt design og gode jubileumstilbud til gamle og nye kunder” (”We are celebrating our 2-year anniversery with a new design and some great anniversery discounts”). It should be possible to remove this phrase at a later stage without the design suffering from this. A suggested placement for the phrase is in the upper, right area next to the logo.

Hi Aliska,

Thanks for your first contribution. I have a few initial comments that I would like to see adressed before I pass the design on to the client for commenting.

1. The left and right columns are too wide, taking too much space from the center colum. I suggest decreasing the width of the left column to 180px, and the right column to 140px.

2. The search box and link to the main page (“Hovedsiden”) are missing from the left column.

3. The prices of the various products needs to be visible. The client also wants to include the list price, so it should be both “Veil pris” (list price) and “Din pris” (your price). If you need more room, the “Buy now” button could simply be the shopping cart symbol, and the more info button, simply an “i” (take a look at http://www.buyhelse.no to see what I mean).

4. All product titles should be in the same color.

5. The shopping cart box should include: a list of the products in the shopping cart, the amount of each product, the order total, and a two buttons labeled “Vis handlekurv” (view shopping cart) and “Gå til kassen” (Checkout). Something like this:

6. The newsletter subscription box should consist of the following:

Regarding the design, I have the following pointers. It’s not mandatory that you follow these, as they are to some extent my personal opinon, but you could take a look and see if you agree with me.

1. The section headings in the right column are too big, both regarding the height and the size of the font used.

2. I’m not crazy about the placement of the anniversery promo. I would prefer to have the shopping cart on top of the right column.

3. I would prefer to have the horizontal navigation align at the top with the vertical navigation.

Thanks for being so quick with the revision. It looks much better now. However, I need to bother you just a little more before I take it to the client.

1. Regarding the featured product boxes, I think you misunderstod me slightly when it comes to “list price” and “your price”. The point is that these are the labels for two different prices to give the client a feeling of what they are saving compared to the list price. Different stores to this differently. Furthermore, please try to put the product title at the top of the box and move the picture down below it and the description up under it.

2. Replace the “Shopping cart” heading with “Handlekurv”, the “Newsletter” heading with “Nyhetsbrev” and the “Tip a friend” heading with “Tips en venn” and the Search button label “Go!” with “Søk!”.

3. For now, remove the anniversary promo, and move the above elements up. Also, you can remove the top of the three advertisements, and I’m hoping these to changes will make the design more “level”.

Thanks for your first contribution. I need you to make the following changes in order for me to show it to the client.

1. Remove the “Search” label.

2. Remove the “Featured products heading”.

3. Replace the caption on the “Buy now” button with “Kjøp” and the “Details” button with “Info” or “Mer info”.

Also, I don’t like the placement of the anniverisary promo as I think the design will suffer once it is removed. Could you try something else?

Thanks for your first contribution, and my personal favorite so far. Here are the changes I need before bringing it to the client.

1. Please replace the “Lorem ipsum” text in the header with:

Nettbutikken for deg som er opptatt av helse og kost
- både forebyggende og helbredende

2. Could you remove the “Search” label for the search section box and move the button up to the right of the keyword field (also, please label it “Søk”) in order for it to take up less space. You might also consider putting the search field into the top of the left menu instead of it having its own box.

3. Replace “Nyhetsbre” with “Nyhetsbrev”

4. Replace the dollar sign with ”kr” for each featured product.
