(Admin code added by Michael - GD5545355)

My last project is going so well that I am starting another. This contest is my 2nd in 30 days and is for a logo and a business card design with a $225 payout.

Company Name: Better Living Wholesalers
Deadline: June 30, 2005
Prize = $225.00

Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo? Better Living Wholesalers

What type of product or service do you offer? We sell many home furnishing products, but our primary products are mattresses, bedroom sets, dining room sets, couches, chairs, pool tables and hot tubs. We buy directly from manufacturers and pass the discounts along to the public. We are not a buying club and we don't charge membership fees, hidden or extra fees to our clients for any reason. We do not incur the high costs of traditional mass-media advertising, expensive high-profile retail space, and commissioned sales staff. This allows us to beat virtually any competitor’s price.

How long have you been in business? New company, but have experience in furniture industry

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity? Establish ourselves as reputable alternative to traditional furniture stores to get brand name, quality products

What are your long term goals? Create model that can have multi-location stores

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience – New business, but our target is middle-income households. We feel that upper income won’t go to wholesale company to buy, as they are stuck with using traditional furn. stores.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines :
What type of logo would you like? Scalable to use in print and web

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?) We are open to color suggestions.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo? We like the idea of an icon, but unsure of what it would be. Initially, we thought of a house, but we don’t want to look like a mortgage or realty company.

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business? – professional, trustworthy, great value, alternative to traditional furniture store

What is your tagline or slogan? Better Buys for Better Living.

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience? Brand name home furnishings at wholesale prices. Alternative to traditional furn. store.

Where will your new logo be used? Print, Web, biz card

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos? Most traditional furn stores have text only logos. We would like an icon.

List competitive URLs if possible
Similar company, not local- http://www.gowfb.com
Local competition - http://www.ashleyhomestores.com, http://www.rhodesfurniture.com, http://www.furnitureliquidators.com/

What sets you apart from your competitors? Regionally, we can beat almost any price as we don’t have the overhead of a typical furn. store.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company: Brand name products at wholesale prices

We request the following: Original files in .PSD or .EPS

We must have ALL rights to the design when this contest is complete but the designer may use the logo in his portfolio!

Bogglins - I like the cursive font and probably like the 2nd logo on the 2nd row the best. Can we try living still in cursive, but horizontal rather than slanted?

Thanks!

I do think that looks better, but not sure about the "wave". It makes me think of a pool, but I am not totally against it. The fonts are clean. I think you're off to a good start.

Hi.. if you have a specific color prefrence.. just let us know.. we'll try to use that colors combination..
perhaps the blue makes you think of a pool..

how if black with greenish-brown?..

I love the color blue, but it's a good idea with this concept to change to something else. Blk/green could be good. Tks for showing the brochure, that helps bring it to life for us.

Tonya- Pretty neat design. It took me a while to figure out that was a couch, but I like the idea of incorporating furniture and a house.

Bogglins- We don't like the brownish-green. We like the solid colors more than the gradient. Again, we like the cursive.

Here's my idea...

earwood
06-15-2005, 08:38 PM
Bill- The fonts look good. I like the variation between the two. We don't want a chair however as a focal point of our logo as we sell many furnishing products.

Just J
06-15-2005, 09:16 PM
I understand you didn't like the idea of the chair and mine resembles a chair, but my idea was to somehow morph a keyhole and a piece of furniture keeping the emphasis on the keyhole.
(sorry I had worked on it before your comments to Bill)

earwood
06-15-2005, 09:27 PM
Jason- thanks for your submission. I like your fonts and sorry you didn't see my post to Bill. We would be more apt to use an abstract chair than a tradition 4-legged seat. I think the cursive is almost too formal. Thinking ahead, I think a cursive font is nice, but we don't want to be perceived as high-priced. I realize that by wanting to represent quality and not represent high-prices could be tough, but I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

Thanks,

Todd

Hopefully there will be more designs coming for this project. I know my last project (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7721) had a ton of great designs.

If anyone has questions about our project or suggestions please post here or PM me. I know this group of designers will create us a great logo and business card.

Thanks,

Paula - Thanks for submitting something different. Unfortunately, the logo looks like another competitor Norwalk (http://www.norwalkfurnitureidea.com/) with the sofa in a square.

Also, we do like the cursive font used on Better Living rather than wholesalers.

We would like our business card to be somewhat flashy and something that stands out. We don't want to seem stuffy. I think we would like to see brighter colors.

I know we seem negative, but we really appreciate your design being different, so we can decide better on what we like. Please try again, as we have liked several of your other designs. :D

Thanks,

Todd

I think we would like to build off of Paula's idea. Could we see our name in a font like Jason's or Bogglins and then incorporate five "boxes" like Paula's with each of our primary product lines? Those 5 products are beds, sofas, hot tubs, dining room sets and pool tables.

I hope this makes sense. Obviously the "boxes" don't have to be square and couldn't be too large, but it sounds appealing to us. Maybe circles or some other way could highlight what we sell. Below is an example of what we want (i.e.- only part of the product is shown, not the whole thing). Please post any questions or suggestions you might have.

Fabian- Thanks for submitting your design. I like the idea of quadrants, but not sure about the fonts. I think we really like the use of cursive and straight text. Also, if we can only show 4 products instead of 5, I would not put a dining room set and would include a hot tub. I really liked your icon for the bed.

Paula- Both fonts you used were very nice and clean. I like the line separating BL from Wholesalers on B and your logo is very good, but we like the multiple products being shown and therefore prefer your A-1. Also, I really like your "icons" for the products, except for the bed. The billiards and sofa are just great. We do prefer Fabian's bed icon. If a bed is hard to do... maybe a side angle of a mattress.

DG- looking forward to your logo.

Everyone - We really like the designs with the product icons. If you have an idea that doesn't include them, that's ok. We'll be glad to see it. Another idea we had that could show multiple products was a shield like this one (http://www.iswza.org/images/emblems/emblem.coat.gif). This idea may not work, but just a thought.

Thanks again for the designs and keep them coming!

Paula- I like C the best. I don't like the "zig zag" of the icons on A and B is a little busy with everything enclosed. Do you think 2 of the icons could go on the left of the logo and 2 on the right? That may not look good, but a thought to space them out.

As for the cards, I like the first B card with the stripes the best and then the one for C with the couch is ok.

Any chance we can do a hot tub instead of chair and table? Not sure how hard that is, but we really need a hot tub icon. Thanks again for the designs.

This is the van we want.

I changed the shapes to rectangles.
They seem to accomodate the spa better.
Thanks,Paula

earwood
06-21-2005, 02:28 PM
Paula- I like the rectangles better, but would prefer the C logo without the "box" around the logo. Thank you for putting it on the van... seeing a logo on a van or on a brochure like Bogglins did before is much easier to see the versatility of a logo.

The hot tub icon is ok, but I don't like the new pool table. Could you zoom in on the top view of the table and show the rack of balls? Something like this...http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/5/54/250px-PoolTablewithEquipment-non.jpg

Finally, could we try different colors like navy & silver or 1C5EE9 & 15F05D (Sorry changed these again- UNC blue and light green) as the colors.

Thanks again for working on our project.

Todd

Relevant Studio - I like the "bubbles" of your design. I don't like the icon choices. The fonts are pretty good. We do not want a lamp as we aren't selling them.

As always thanks for putting the logo on the van. It helps a lot to visualize the use of the logo. Please try to use the icons listed below.

Everyone - We will still look at any logo, if you have something that is different or funky, we aren't 100% stuck on the icons, but do like what we have going.

If you choose to use a design with icons we MUST have a bed and a hot tub. We are open to designs that include the following...

Sofa
Pool table (please show the pool rack w/ balls)
Dining room table
Recliner

Thanks,
Todd

Everyone - We like a clean lettering with our logo. After asking a few friends to check out the logos submitted, we have found that Relevant Studio, Tonya and Fabian's fonts are the cleanest.

We ARE still open to other ideas, we know you guys have creative minds and we don't want to stifle that with our icons idea. My last project had some late entries that could have worked, but since they were submitted so late... it was hard to pick them. That being said, I hope we see more submissions to find the best design.

To review the current submissions...

Bogglins - We need something more than just the wave, but we like your mix of cursive and straight font.

Tonya- we would like to see another design from you. The fonts were nice and we could use the sofa somehow.

Bill - similar to Tonya, the concept is ok. Just don't want to use the chair.

Jason - Very, very classy font. A new icon inside that circle would be nice.

Fabian- With a few different icons, your font could work too.

Paula- We still like working with your designs. Could we see the 2 of the icons to the left and 2 to the right of the wording or possibly a cleaner font on Better Living?

Rel. Studio- Dig the design, very clean...just try a couple new icons.

DesignGeneral- Still hoping to see a logo from you.

Great stuff from everyone keep the designs coming!

Thanks,
Todd

Revisions :)
Let me know if the pool table looks better.

Paula,

The design itself reminds us of Lowe's (http://images.lowes.com/animate/IHILogos/Lowes_IHI_logo_432x239.jpg), which is fine with us.

We like the shape of design E (like a house)with the lettering of Wholesalers on D (don't like the white bar around it.. just like large letters instead).

As for the pool table, it's better. I think we could do something different w/ a hot tub, but I am not sure what it would be. I also like the sofa on Message 26 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showpost.php?p=157313&postcount=26) better than the full sofa. It would be nice to see half of a sofa like #26 and add a recliner, if there is room.

Thanks again for all your work. We like what you are doing.

DG- We like the concept of a house and we like the colors. However, we don't know what the 90 degrees CCW "B" is supposed to be. We are glad to see a different concept, just don't like the use of the B.

Paula-We like the design of E-c the best. Don't like the silver after all, but we can work on the colors later.

We like the couch better, but still not sure about the hot tub. We need to show the "panels" of the redwood exterior to the hot tub. This may sound confusing, so here are some pics that may help (http://www.betterlw.com/help_pics.htm). (link also includes sofas, beds, and pool tables we like).

Pool tables - we still like the rack of balls, but pockets would be nice and only one stick is necessary.

Also, I don't think we were very clear about the word Wholesalers. We do not want the word "boxed" in with the rectangle. Just the word in that size font would be great.

Everyone- We are extending our deadline to Friday, June 31. We are making good progress, but since this contest is for a logo and business card, we feel we need more time.

Adrian (DG),

Not sure that works for us. After you said it, I understood... but I would prefer it to be explicit. Again, I like the abstract house and the colors... maybe something different than the 'B."

Right now, it looks more like a realtor or home builder than a furniture wholesaler.

DG- We like your #4 design better than #5. #5's letters are just too tall.

Could you make the roof extend from the B to the g of Living to cover the whole name? Could you also just add a chimney instead of a letter making one? Maybe the "dot" from the 2nd eye could work to create the chimney in an outline, like Paula's F-5.

Do you suggest centering the word Wholesalers if the roof covered the whole thing? Colors are very, very good.

Paula- The hot tub looks so much better. Of your latest batch, we like F-3 the best. F-5 is very creative, but we don't like the lowercase b. If a capital B could work (maybe a diff. font) we like the concept.

I am almost scared to ask this, but could you take F-2 & F-3, remove the icons and stretch the name to fit inside the house and/or roof. We think we will be unable to use the icons when you shrink the logo for certain print items, but could still use it on van, web, etc.

As for your colors, F-3 & F-5 are the best. Would like to see another color added to the yellow of F-5.

Thanks,

Todd

Carl- Sorry about the confusion on the name layout. Didn't realize that was a no-no. As for the room from above- I still love the name/font/layout... just not the actual room. I still believe we can find a good solution with something on the left.

Fabian- I dig the business card. I think it's a good design.

We really like the simple designs you guys and girls are creating.

Julie- Thank you for your design. We really like the font, but the "column" icon looks a little too fancy for us. Very nice to see it clean and simple, but just need to supplement something else in there. We want the logo to evoke feelings of a home (not necessarily a literal house), but warm feelings and since we want to stress that they get a very good value buying from us, we don't want to look too fancy.

Hope that makes sense and please try again.

Todd

Tonya- Glad to see you submitted another design. If our logo will have one "product" a bed would be best. However, I think we want a simpler/cleaner logo. We really like many of your designs and hope you try again.

Jule- I like that it's simple. The only issue is that we don't sell many sofas. As I said, above a bed (if any) would be best if a product will be used in the design. The circle is very nice just as in #14. Colors were good too. Please try to do another.

Everyone- We want a simple, clean logo that is not busy. Here are a few options that could work, but at the end of the day.. clean and simple.

- use of a house
- use of initials, B, BL or BLW

To further help everyone understand what we want, here is a list some of those already submitted for our project that we like and why.

#14- simple, clean... but the keyhole idea doesn't work for us
#31- clean, but don't like the product icons or "fuzzy" circles
#47- clean, design... but lacks something (maybe too plain)
#53- creative & clean (just didn't realize that leaf was a pillow)
#59- great font and layout of name... unsure of icon
#79- creative, clean and simple.. one of the best so far

Here are some we don't like and why...

#12- not a good font and don't like use of a chair
#38- this one is our fault, b/c we thought it could look good... but the icon idea never worked and has further pushed us to go for simple
#43- don't like the balls/orbs (maybe too abstract for us)
#71- the use of the letters BLW could be a good idea, just not this way
#85- column is too fancy, we want to promote value.. not expensive

I know this project has been on here for a couple weeks, but please be hang in there with us. I know the talent of this group will bring us a great logo.

Thanks,

Todd

Carl- I like the circle and the design. Can we try the old "B" with and w/out the pillow in the circle?

Bart- Very cool design, but not the colors (we don't like yellow). Not sure this will work, but here's a twist on your idea. Better and Living in green w/ rooftop and wholesalers in another color. Let's try the rooftop sitting over "etter" so that it's more centered and wholesalers slides to the right instead of being centered so that the "r" in wholesalers is encircled by the descending "g" in Living above it, the "s" in wholesalers would stick out slightly to the right. Again, this may not work, but it's just something we discussed.

Jason- Cool design and pretty good colors. I appreciate you trying the B again. Can't think of a change in yours.

Thanks for keeping these simple and clean.

Bart- Thanks for making the change. That's what we wanted to see and it looks good.

Carl- Thank you also for making the change. I think it looks very good, but can you change the circle to not be shaded and just be a circle? I am afraid it looks like a billiards ball with just the shading.

Great stuff guys! :)

Bart- Yes, if you have others, please try them out. You are definitely following what we want. We would like to see another few ideas.

The only other change you might try on your last one is another font that is less cursive or not cursive at all. Just an idea to see the difference.

Bart- #99 is good, #101 isn't as good as your others, but thanks for submiting it. Of your designs, it's between #94 & #99. Very good designs.

Carl- Thanks for changing the circle. Your thoughts on which circle works better?

Bojan- Design 1 has tall letters which is cool, but we don't like the house. Design 2 is very creative, but we don't want to use a chair and it looks a little too modern for us. Design 3 is good, but we would like to see more of a house shape and less of an upward arrow. Thanks for trying something different with putting wholesalers up top, but we think it looks better at the bottom.

Again, thank you for keeping it clean and simple. Very impressive designs.

Thanks,

Todd

The first 2 shapes inside the house can be viewed as "b", "L". When looking at all 3 shapes, they make a person in bed: the square being a person's head, the "L" being his arm and body, and the "b" finishing the body and making footboard.

Taldo- We don't like all 4 "houses" for our logo. We still think of real estate with it. Maybe a design w/ less of them would work,

Tonya- Very creative and the colors are nice. We like a lot about it, but it looks too much like J Lo's logo (http://www.topbrandsdirect.com/images/jlo_1_t_whi_200.jpg) . Maybe a version of it could work, but that font is way too similar.

Carl- Good idea to change up the circle. The full is better than the offset, but this is pretty cool.

Bart- This one is too busy. We like #94 and 99 the best. Could we see a biz card design with #94?

Bojan- The slanted house just doesn't seem to work for us. We thought a variation could work, but those are not the direction that we want.

Everyone- We will be accepting logos through this weekend and after Sunday, we will make a decision. Thank you for keeping these logos clean. If you have an idea or need more time, please PM me.

DG- The font on the cards is ok. Just want something more cursive...like this font. (http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=renaissance&nb_ppp=50&text=Better+Living)

The card still needs to be something more than just solid lines. Maybe using something with the roof.

Ok, thanks to everyone for submitting their designs. We feel we have great ones to choose from, but we need to pick some finalists and wrap this up.

Our top three choices are:

1- Bart's #94
2- Carl's #100
3- Design General's #117

We will try to make a final decision in the next 24 hours.

Can you please make the roof on card #3 (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showpost.php?p=161271&postcount=117) be the tan color and keep the chimney black?

Also where do you think we can add the tag line... Better Buys for a Better Living?

Adrian- Logo looks great and that card looks good, but I don't like the tag line in that position or that close to the logo. Is there another place it can go? Also, let's go back to the roof in black. I think my idea of 2 colors doesn't work.

I just sent you a PM with our official information that you can use on the card .

What PMS colors are being used on our logo? I want to be sure of the color.

We would like to use the back of the card for more than just the tag line or logo. Could we place a small map on the back of our card to show where our store is located? Also, could we have a bulleted list of main products we sell?

Not sure of your schedule, but we would like to wrap this up soon.

Thanks for all your work!

Todd

Hi Todd,

You will have the PMS colors written on the logo legend :)

I can place a map and and a bulleted list on the back of the card if we have enough space for them. I need the image map sent at 300DPI and the product list that you want to show there.

I'll be back shortly with the revisions.

Adrian- I looked up Pantone 1945 and I think we like it, but we want to see them side by side.

As for the back of the card, the tag line and web site address would be good along with the following (I know it's crowded and we may have to cut some).

Here is the map in Illustrator format (http://www.betterlw.com/images/d2.ai). Please place the logo where the box says go here.

I want three bulleted lists of products.

Home Goods

Hot Tub Spas
Billiard Pool Tables
Bars/Barstools
Electric Fireplaces

Bedding

Mattress Sets/Beds
Tempur Mattress
Memory Foam Pads

Furniture

Bedroom
Dining Room
Living Room
Home Office
Kid's Room

Fellas,

Don't mean to interject here, but the difference between Pantone colors and the letters they represent is this:

U = Printed Uncoated
C = Printed Coated
M = Printed Matte Finish

So basically they are the identical ink, but with a different print treatment. Computer programs use different codes to try to emulate how the color will look when printed on the particular paper, but, inks react differently to every type of paper and situation. To get the exact duplication of a color, it is best to consult your printer before deciding on a final color. You may see burgandy on screen, but if your monitor is not calibrated to the equipment that is printing the logo, the color will not match. Your printer will have a Pantone matching book and will be able to show you the results of 1955 printed on coated paper, uncoated, matte finish, varnished, etc. It is best not to trust your monitor.

Sorry Todd, I just noticed you have a pantone book. That is what you should trust, not the computer monitor.

Your Pantone book should have a coated and an uncoated section so you can see the differences.
