View Full Version : PC IDE Cable

I'm in need of an IDE cable with a middle connector so I can connect a second slave hard drive to my computer. At present I only have a 2gb hd, which as you can probably guess isn't ideal, and the second hard drive is also just 2gb.
Anywho, does anybody know where I can get a cheap ide cable, online, from a UK site if possible? I've looked everywhere to no avail. Any help would be SO appreciated.. :(

go into a PC shop and ask - they'll probably give you one :P or it'll only cost a few bucks.

If I could offer my opinion: Get a USB cradle.
They're awesome! You can put any 5.25" or 3.5" unit in it!
My computer has only 1 bay for the HD and 1 for the CD-ROM.
I was in desperate need of a bigger HD but had no place to put it.
Someone suggested the USB cradle idea. It's better than going with an external HD, in that if you get a new system, or want to use your HD on another system, all you have to do is "plug and play".
IMHO that is the only way to go... now I have 2 cradles, one for my new 80Gb HD and 1 for my burner.
I know nothing about the Master/Salve thing in my computer (sorry I can't help you with your actual question), but if you can afford it... the cradle option is definitely the way to go.

I would consider that usb crade option however, the hard drive I have is for internal use... :(
:o You lazy bint... :o
I cant believe that....

I'll get you one from work... but only if youre coming out this weekend? :P

That's the whole point! You use the cradle to house internal drives!
Like I said my comp has no more room for internals, so I was told to get the cradle.
It's awesome... If I get another comp, I can take the HD out of the cradle, put it inside the tower, and maybe put an internal DVD in the empty cradle. They're extremely versatile. More so than an extrenal drive, where what you get is what you have.
The cradle with the drive INSIDE it sits outside the computer, and is connected with a USB 2.0 cable, that is backwards compatible to USB 1.1.
Way cool.

Ohhhh! I see. But the cable here is like £2.50, ($5-6), whereas i'm guessing a usb cradle would be more..

Yeah... probably quite a bit more, but you should keep it in mind for the future, perhaps.

If you still want one let me know.

I think if you have a look at the HD next to where you plug in the IDE cable you see a set of pins (6 in total) well they maybe a little plastic thing (IT term..lol) connecting 2 of the pins, if so that has to come out to make it a slave.
I don't know if you have to play around with the setup at the start of booting up the PC (hit delete or F1), sorry i'm no IT chap, just things I've done when playing around with old Pc's.

little plastic thing == jumper :D
You'll need to set your "main" hard drive, the one that you used previously to "master" and the new one to "slave". Then go into the BIOS setup screen (where it says "press del to enter BIOS or something similar when you first load up) and hit the "auto detect IDE devices (or similar ;)).

Thanks Platinum. I have just purchased the cable now, and it's sitting right here on my desk... i'm a bit hesitant to use it because i'll probably break the whole computer :lol2: I'll have a gander in the BIOS later. Thanks!
Victoria, the HD I gave you, I didnt see the jumper.
I knew something didnt look right.
Its about 5yrs since I last added a HD - bit rusty on the old knowledge.
But now I know what to do. I forgot where the jumper was....
...what do the jumpers on the motherboard do, anyone?
I remember fiddling about with those back in the day - that mightve been when i was adding RAM tho.
What I do know though is this:
bint n. Derogatory term for a daft slapper, a bird. eg, Jordan or Joanne Guest.
You hear it all the time in the UK... and btw, I was just kiddin... :innocent:

lol 2sqaure :P
You might have to wander into your local computer shop and ask if they've got a couple of spare jumpers laying around... even though you didn't want to :D They're just tiny cheap little plastic things.
palmer: hehe - ok I'll post a picture of my computer just for you ;)
