Project: Logo for Spearboard Open Spearfishing Tournament
Deadline: June30, 2003
Contest Reward: $150
I run www.Spearboard.com, an online spearfishing forum. The forum has it?s own logo, which you can view here: http://www.spearboardopen.com/spearboardlogo.jpg
However, I?d like the Spearfishing Tournament to have it?s own logo (perhaps incorporating the Spearboard logo). The Spearboard Open Spearfishing Tournament has it?s own page: http://www.spearboardopen.com.
This logo will be used not only on the site, but on shirts and other promotional items.
Here are a couple popular examples from other spearfishing tournaments:
The St. Pete Open: http://www.spearfishingspuc.org/StPeteOpen2003.jpg
The Hell Divers: http://www.helldivers.org/
I like both of these a lot, but of course want something unique.
Here is what would appeal to me (and most spearfishermen):
1. A very attractive and "well built" looking lady, with no nudity but topless ok as long as everything is not showing. She could be diving, shooting a fish, but incorporating the speargun or dive gear is a definite plus (again, w/o ripping off the Hell Divers);
2. Incorporating the Spearboard Logo is a possibility, as stated, and
3. Incorporating fish, such as a grouper of hogfish. A lot of people use hogfish because there are such interesting looking fish. The Spearboard logo uses a hogfish.
I?ll check back for any questions or comments. Thanks!

Based on your current logo and posted examples, I assume you're looking for full-blown 4-color?

Yes, that is correct.

Here is a good photo of a hogfish, and you can see why they make such interesting drawings. They are colorful and have strange characteristics. http://www.spearboardopen.com/tournmarkhog.jpg
Is anyone going to be interested in submitting something on this? Any questions?

I most definitely am interested! That's a helluva bizarre looking fish!
(and you catch 'em with Spears?!)
Anyways, I do have a bit on my plate at the moment,
but I'll try and get something posted, sooner, rather than later. ;)

Thanks for your interest.
Yes, we get these spearfishing in the Florida Middle Grounds, about 100 miles offshore. It's one of the few fish that can only be obtained by spearing them, because with rare exception they won't bite a baited hook.

That's cra-a-a-azy. I would think with a mouth like that, they'd be biting everything in their path.
(I guess they're not stupid, eh?)
I'll try an get something together soon.

I forgot to mention that the logo should have the text:
Spearboard Open 2004
If the text was an editable layer, that would make it easy to change the year in the future. But if it's not editable, that no big deal.

Hello Spearboard.
Please accept this as an initial sketch/idea for your logo design.
If it's in the right direction, please advise, and I'll work on finishing and colouring it.
Please let me know.

Hi Spearboard!
Here's another idea for your "Spearboard Open" logo.
I'd appreciate it if you could let me know if I'm on the right track,
and I'd be happy to complete finished full-colour art for you to view.
Let me know if there's anything you like, don't like, would like to see changed/added, etc.
and I'll do my best to fix 'er up. :D
Thank you very much for your consideration.

Hey Kimber,
I hadn't noticed the reply to this. I really like the way you tied the logo into the drawing. Would like to see some fish, if possible. Not sure about the mermaid. I was hoping more for a woman who was spearfishing or diving or something. It's very nice work, but doesn't quite have the "raw" feel of the other logos that I showed as examples.

Second Submission: I like that a lot more, Kimber. I'll comment first thing tomorrow morning, as I'm pretty beat right now. Looking much better!

Okay,
Do you like the "Chick with flippers & wetsuit?".
Maybe you were posting when I was uploading.
If you like her,
should I add some fish?
Please advise.

Sorry about that. I commented on the first one just as you were putting up the second.
Yes, I like the chick with the flippers and wetsuit. Here is my take:
Likes: I like the creative layout of everthing. Her sitting on the logo is really cool, and I like the way the text is placed. I wouldn't change that.
Changes: My only concern is that she has a certain "cartoon"like persona. I'd like the girl to be more life like, as though a model posed for the drawing. For example, there are no exaggerated features on the Hell Divers girl (well, exaggerating some parts are ok :P). The logo was taken down of off of their site, but I found a small copy of it here: http://www.mobilescuba.com/
I love the Hell Divers logo, and it came out great on t-shirts, etc.. It captures a certain "raw" feeling. Not sure "raw" is very descriptive, but hopefully you know what I mean. I am real concerned about getting this right because it will be going on thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, and have an entire tournament web site built around it, so hope I am not being too nitpicky. That brings up another point, hopefully the drawing will work out well with print screen for merchandise. Not sure wheather that is good to know from the artists perspective.

Kimber-
The more I look at that last one, the more I like it. It's growing on me. Just trying to picture what it would look like in color with some fish added.

Awesome! I'm glad you like her. I'm a bit of a caricature artist, rather than a photgraphic realist,
(Mind you I could try my "bestest" if I really had to.)
Since I already have this one in the works, I'll "airbrush" her to add some "life",
and add some fishies to the design, too.
I'll see what I can get done this weekend.
Have a good one.

With two days left, this is starting to look like a one horse race. <_<
Is anyone going to give Kimber a run for the money, or will this go down as the easiest contest win in designOutpost history?

I've worked on getting them interested in this. I'm hoping they show their competitive spirit and give Kimber a run for the money. Guess we'll wait and see.

Hi Scott,
What is the largest size you can imagine the Spearboard Open logo to be printed at?
I need to know, as my logo will be raster image (photographic) and I need to ensure the resolution is suitable for what you need to use it for.
For example, is the largest item The web? Tshirt? Poster? Billboard?
Please let me know soon... I'm all ready to add colour.
Thanks,
Kimber

The largest it will be is enlarged on the back of a t-shirt. I can't think of any products that would require it to be larger. I will use it for posters, too, but that size for the t-shirts should suffice.
Can't wait to see it in color with the fish!

Kimber-
That is a great drawing, and the layout is right on the money. I just can't get past the fact that she is more of a caricature. The look I was hoping for was more like the features of a real "hottie" sitting on the logo. Everything else looks great, although I still need to see the fish.
This is a thought. If no one else enters, I'd be willing to start another contest using your layout, with the contest being decided on who draws the best lady on the logo. I would throw another $50 into the pot, so that you got $100 and the winner got $100 for the collaberation. that way, all the things I like about your work would not go to waste. If you want to submit another lady before the deadline on your own, that would be fine too.

Hey Kimber,
I hope I didn't lose you altogether on this thing. I like your work a lot, so maybe we can salvage everything I like by changing the couple of things I don't think work.
Can you change the exagerated features of the face. The body is great, but maybe a wet suit with like a low cut opening showing some cleavage. With fish and text, I think we can get it to fly, if we can just get her to look a little more like she was based on the a real person. What do you think?

How is it going? Will you have something for me soon? I'll be happy to extend the deadline, and close the contest to any new submissions. Just need to know your still tweaking the little hottie for me. :D BTW, all opinions I have got on your work have been very positive.

Hi Scott,
Nice to hear all comments have be positive. That's great incentive.
Anyways... I've dropped the "Cool World" / "Jessica Rabbit" look, and tried for a little more "real".
Still no fish -- but they're on the way!
Again, just a progress post (so you know you haven't lost me). ;)
I'd appreaciate it if you could extend your deadline a bit.
This is a wee bit time-consuming (mostly the "airbrushing", my computer is so very slow, the file's large, and save-time is "extensive").
But what can ya do?

Anyway, as stated, looks great.

Hi Scott,
Just another progress post.
Words... the fish are still spawning on the drawing board.
I desided to make the "Spearboard Open" in shades of orange
(to match the Spearboard.com logo-fish), I though is I made
it blue too, the whole thing might be too blue. (Especially when the fish are added).
-Kimber
[append.] I was just looking at it, and maybe the "2004" should be int he oranges as well.
Please let me know what you think.

Looks great, Kimber. I actually like the 2004 in blue. I'll have to see if the fish change my opinion of there being too much blue, but as of now it looks fine. Thanks.
