Hi and welcome to DO :)

A question to you: why "Silver Basement"? What's the meaning of the name and would you like this meaning to be reflected in the logo?

Thanks in advance :)

SilverBasement

Not really sure, to be honest. There weren't too many domain names left, and, this was one of the 25-30 that we thought of, which was still left.

Of course if anyone can suggest a BETTER domain name, that is still, in fact, available, I would be willing to pay a $50 finder fee (call it creative incentive), and we all know that as far as creativity goes, nobody beats Design Outpost.

Again, anyone who can suggest a better domain name (one that WE think is better, and one that we buy), will earn a $50 finder fee. Of course Design Outpost would earn the 10% as per their terms of service.

Here's a thought for a tagline/image. Not sure how good it is, and, by no means is this final, but, it's a thought:

"Basement pricing...Penthouse Quality"

In this case, maybe, you would like to put this project on hold and start another one for a new name? :) Then, when you've got a name, you can continue this project with your new name?

Not all of us know enough about hosting, checking for the available names and such, and for many of us (including myself) English isn't our first language, so if you include the name in this project, it probably wouldn't be exactly a fair game :D

SilverBasement

Not at all. We are satisfied with this domain name. We are always open to suggestions but, we are satisfied with this one, at this time. We are going to move forward with this logo contest.

Thank you.

I am new to this, so please forgive me if I don't give the proper critiques. Please feel free to ask for more information if I don't make myself too clear. I have zero experience with design work, so bare with me.

Let me first say, across the board, that because we will be a website exclusively, I would like the ".com" to appear in our logo (unless you folks think it shouldn't, for a reason).

Bill-It's simple, and classy, but I don't quite know that we want the "basement" theme emphasized. Would love to see another, unique, idea from you.

Paula-This idea is simple and elegant, but, I think it might be more simple than what we wanted. Can you move the "basement" beside the "Silver"? With regards to the second idea, we don't care for the font too much as it's bit too standard, if that makes any sense. Would prefer a classier, luxury type font.

Fabian-Neat design, but, I'm not quite sure I get it. Not discounting this design, at all, but, could you please explain it?

Silver... I have one question.. What is the primary type of jewelry you will be selling? Rings, necklaces and such? What will you keep the most of in stock?? What type of design are you looking for... BOLD, FLAIR, or SIMPLISTIC? Just a few helpful questions to get me started. Thanks, Bart

SilverBasement
07-12-2005, 07:08 AM
Again, I'm new at this so I appreciate your asking me enough questions to garner a response from you folks.

I will be selling ALL TYPES of sterling silver jewelry (rings, necklaces, pendants, charms, bracelets...you name it, we will have it).

As for the type of design, well, I'll leave that up to you. I am open to suggestions, in general, although, I did mention above that I prefered something elegant, classy looking.

Bojan-This design seems a little "techy" for us. Almost seems like a logo for some type of IT product. Not really the direction we want to go in. Would prefer a smoother, more flowing design. I would love to see other ideas you might have, though.

Pracus-Very elegant and nice. Would like to see the design have more rounded, smoother edges, though.

Taldo
This is simple, elegant, very refined. The font doesn't tell me much, to be honest, but, this is the direction that we want to go. I would love to see what else you have to offer.

Bart
This too is excellent. A logo that will eventually become our identity. Again, I would love to see what else you have to offer.

Thank you all so much for the hard work you are putting in, and in advance to those of you who intend to enter.

Taldo:There is something about this that isn't quite right. Or quite the look which I am going for. Not sure how, as it's very creative, but, there's something there that isn't quite right for me. As creative as the SB is, it doesn't speak of luxury or class to us. Not sure how else to say it. I would like to see another idea, if you have it.

Bart: Another very nice idea, thank you.

Kassi: The diamond might be misleading, as we won't be selling any diamonds. Otherwise, very nice, but, would prefer another style graphic. The third idea we do like, but, I can't quite make out the design in the background. It's an "S" right? Or did I miss it?

Can we have some font and color variations, as we like the simple nature of the design but the font really doesn't say much, and the colors we feel might be too dark. Something muted, but not so dark. Also, the ".com" should be in there (smaller than the rest of the words).

Hi,

I'm glad You liked my version. I will do some more, as elegant as this one was - if needed.

I personally don't think that the logo-emblem "SB" and logo itself should be put together as i did on the bottom-left version.
Because the first letter S is too similar (well actually identical) and that ruins the moment.

it's should be something like Nike. an "arrow" and name "nike" , but usually not ON eachother.

Probably lot's of grammar/plot mistakes but i hope You understund my point. :)

Trysen. The font is very nice. Clean, Elegant, yet modern. Maybe you can extend the S out horizontally, a SLIGHT bit further, to make it slightly clearer that it's an S. Would also like to see some other options for the colors.

DesignGeneral. Not in love with the font. Not as elegant as some of the other fonts in this thread. Would like to see some other options for that, and, of course, if you have any other ideas for the graphic, would love to see those as well (although we do like the S/Infinity type symbol).

I've reseached the meaning, and would like to emphasize the simplicity of the (solid) ELEMENT that silver has.
> capable of being fashioned into a new form
> sonorous / ductile / easily led or influenced

and the basement:
>fundamental part of something; specifically: the rocks underlying stratified rocks :)

so, here's my new idea.

Some excellent, excellent work here, everyone.

Kassi, hopefully you got the answer to your question, in my earlier post.

Bogglins, what is the design supposed to represent? It's beautiful, but I'm not sure it fits what we do.

Severner. I'm still not sure I'm in love with the SB. I love the look and feel of the font, and colors, but, I'm not sure that the SB works for us yet. Maybe you could play with it some?

Graphix...very interesting take on things. I definately would like some options for color and fonts, and, I might also play with the positioning/look of the circles some. Otherwise, very original...we hadn't thought of going in this direction, but we do like it.

I'm not quite sure about your last idea, though. It might take some time to grow on me. Let me think about this one.

Hi SilverBasement,
my first 2 concepts were the initials of S & B..
and the third concept was only the S
they are stylized.. because jewelery is also stylized.. hand crafted with the soul of art...

My approach were to get you a unique symbol/icon that represents the long name of Silver Basement..

Thanks!

DesignGeneral, for whatever reason, I'm still not convinced about this logo. I've seen some of the work you do on here, and can't help but be impressed by the consistently high quality of it, but, I'm just not in love with this idea. I would absolutely love it if you would come up with a couple of brand new ideas and submit them, as I know you have it in you.

Hey everyone, we've decided to try to pair down the field here, as hard as that has been (as there are SO MANY good entries) by going with some
finalists. This does NOT close off the contest to any new entries, as the deadline is still a few days away. Should any of you have any new ideas, we would kindly request that you post them just the same.

We would also like to remind everyone that this is a business card contest as well (not all of you have been posting business card designs to go with the logos).

Pracus, Message Number 18:
Some color and font options here would be greatly appreciated.

Kassi, Message Number 46 and 47 (we really like several of your ideas). Some color and font options here would be greatly appreciated.

Eziey, Message 55:
Some color and font options here would be greatly appreciated.

Severner, Message 56:
We love the font and coloring and as previously requested, we would maybe like some new ideas for the SB.

Thinkkre8iv, Message Number 90:
Some color and font options here would be greatly appreciated. Some options as to the positioning of the logo, in relation to the words in the logo would also be greatly appreciated.

Tonya, Message 101/125 (undecided as to look):
Some color and font options here would be greatly appreciated.

DesignGeneral, Message 124:
Some color and font options here would be greatly appreciated. We would also like you to play around with this a little bit. We like the idea...the infiniti symbol with a S and a B worked in there, but, maybe

There was a little internal questioning as to how I posted my logos previously with the colour/font options. We thought they may not be following the posting guidelines that we (the designers) are to follow. Tonya, I like the look of the emblem in post number 125 (the rotation, etc), which I believe (correct me, please, if I'm wrong), is the same as in your revisions of color in number 157. I also like the purplish color of 125 so I think that's the one we will stick to. Now it is going to be about finding a font that I like and, I haven't seen one yet in your submissions that I'm crazy about. But, as for the look of the emblem and the coloring, we have our favorite. No more revisions required. We can work on that stuff if your design is chosen as the winner.

Bart: There are no more revisions required. We can work on revisions if your design is chosen as the winner.

Eziey: No revisions. We can work on revisions if your design is chosen as the winner.

Kassi: No revisions. We can work on revisions if your design is chosen as the winner.

We will wait on Severner's revisions and make our decision today, at some point, hopefully.

I'm sorry, the font you've asked everyone to use is one that is integral to Severner's design (http://www.designoutpost.com/forums/showpost.php?p=162191&postcount=56). In this situation, it would be an infringement on that design, so we can't use that font.

What we can do is find other fonts that have a similar style to them.

SilverBasement
07-22-2005, 09:25 AM
You are incorrect, and, I've already run this by the mods. Fonts are not copywriteable, as they are public access. The design itself is, but not the font.

Believe me, I already took the possibility into consideration when I requested the font change. Should you STILL not wish to post it, that's fine, but, I will likely be requiring that font in any design that I choose (not certainly, but likely).

SilverBasement

SilverBasement
07-22-2005, 09:26 AM
Having said that, and, despite the fact that you are incorrect in your premise, you can feel free to try to find similar fonts to that one. But, again, unless the font is modified in some way unique to the design implemented by that particular designer, a font is NOT, in any way, shape, or form, copyrightable.

SB

SilverBasement
07-22-2005, 09:29 AM
By the way, if you do a little bit of research on Google, or any other, more legalized software (Lexis/Nexis, or Westlaw), they go one step further. Not only is a design's font not subject to copyright laws, but, the FONT ITSELF is not even subject to copyright laws.

SB

Tonya
07-22-2005, 09:32 AM
The problem isn't because it's a font someone else used, it's that it's actually part of Severner's design. So in this case, I don't think we can do that. Let me double check with admin, though, and I'll come back with an answer shortly.

Designers: hold up until I get an answer about this.

SilverBasement
07-22-2005, 09:35 AM
I've already forwarded you, via PM, Michael's response. There is NO design, and, that's the issue. I, technically, own the domain name, and, because there is no design associated with the font used, and because she did not alter the font in any way, there are no copyright issues here.

Read your PM, and you will find Michael's response.

It's not a big deal. If you really see this as wrong (and to be honest, a simple font use is not really that big a deal, as you, I and everyone else has access to these fonts, and they aren't an original creation of Severner's), then feel free not to post the revision and, if you prefer, find a similar, alternate font.

SB

SilverBasement

Volume 37 of the Code of Federal Regulations:
"The following are examples of works not subject to copyright and applications for registration of such works cannot be entertained: (...) typeface as typeface" 37 CFR 202.1(e).

Typefaces:
In the United States, typeface designs are not covered by copyright, but may be covered by patents if sufficiently novel.

In Europe, Germany (in 1981) and the UK (in 1989) have passed laws making typeface designs copyrightable. The UK law, unlike the German, is retroactive, so designs produced before 1989 are also copyrighted, if the copyrights wouldn't have already expired.

Tonya, I would appreciate your reinstating post 186, considering you have Michael's response to the situation (to whom Palmer deferred). SilverBasement

Tonya, I think in the future greater care should be taken on your behalf. I think that the steps you took should have been taken in reverse order. You should FIRST have contacted the mods, THEN removed the post. I don't think that random removal of posts, on a hunch, whim, or opinion of yours (or anyone's), is the right thing to do, especially when considering copyright issues.

Not upset, or trying to preach...just some friendly advice.

Bart, if anyone caused the uproar, it was I. And, I took the time/care to run this by Palmer (who referred me to Michael as the copyright specialist), prior to even requesting it. Palmer can verify this, and has, in fact, given the ok to Tonya. It certainly wasn't your fault.

SB

Just J
07-22-2005, 10:17 AM
Hi SB,

The reason Tonya removed the post was because items in question are removed and discussed by the mods and admins. The reason for Tonya's actions were that of DO policy, not tradmark law.

Our policy states that unless a particular font is suggested before it is used, it is not to be used by another designer within that thread as the "idea" belongs to that designer. This is done to limit designers from copying other designs.

It seems in this case, that the rule has been waived.

Hope that helps. :)

SilverBasement
07-22-2005, 10:21 AM
If that is a rule, it's a silly one. What's to stop a designer from posting 500 different ideas, without any thought whatsoever, comprising ONLY 500 different font types, thereby rendering them unusable by other designers?

If that is a rule, it should be re-worked. At the very least, it should coincide with copyright laws, which are very clear on the matter.

A "design" as you call it, has NOTHING to do with the font, unless the font is modified in an original way by that designer.

Thought about logically, it's a no brainer, guys. I appreciate your input, but, it's not even that difficult.

SB

Tonya
07-22-2005, 10:23 AM
I'm sorry if I've offended you somehow. That was certainly never my intention. Being a moderator, it's my job to make sure that certain guidelines are followed and to take certain actions when they aren't. We have a rule that designers may not use unique elements from each others designs. In some situations, that includes font selection. And since Severner's design actually utililzed a letter from that font in his graphic, it would normally be considered an element of his design.

But, you'd gotten approval from Admin on other designer's using the font, so we're all clear.

Senter
07-22-2005, 10:25 AM
so what do the finalists need to do now??

SilverBasement
07-22-2005, 10:27 AM
Ok, can we all move on and finish up this contest? Causing this type of situation was NOT my intention. I just really liked the font used. I wouldn't even CONSIDER stealing someone's unique/original design, artwork, or any sort of creation, however, in my opinion (and in that of the mods), the font used did not fall into those categories.

I think all that needs to be said on the matter already has been. You've not offended me at all, and, I still value your design very highly. Let's all just move on and keep moving towards our goals here.

SB

SilverBasement
07-22-2005, 10:28 AM

dear moderators,i know it's not allowed to put so many different versions on one canvas but it's only till he chooses the one he like. if that done i will delete this picture and add a normal version.

would take too much time and would be quite pointless to make different canvas for every single item on this pic.

On the top row, I like the second one from the right. And, in post number 174, I also liked the one on the right, in the top row.

Hi,

Pure and more feminine..
what do you think?

I see we have still some time... So do you like that round emblem or do You need something even More elegant?

edit: my point is, that It's not final. i can make changes if needed.
for example that businesscard is deffenetily far from final.

Go for it. Make as many changes as you want. The more the merrrier. Remember also that I liked the other idea that you posted in number 174 on the top right.

Severner, I have ONE idea you might want to try, to see how it looks. It will require you using a slightly different font on the two letters in the emblem, though.

On this emblem. What you can do is make the S a different color than the B. Follow me so far? Then, you can make the S flow directly into the B the way it is now, but, change the color of the bottom arch of the B, so that it looks like a continuation of the S. It might also require you making the S's intersection with the B more paralell to the ground.

Does that make ANY sense>?

This is probably not the direction you actually were hoping I'd go, but curvy, decorative fonts just don't seem to fit well with the clean, simple style of this logo. So anyway, here's my attempt to dazzle you with something different :D

Here's some preview..
Please choose the one you like the most so far (if any)..

You can always combine different ideas - if you know what i mean.

I get what you mean now. Going to post some versions right away.

Let me try to explain more clearly. Taking the SB emblem in this last post, at the very bottom, as opposed to the one that you are revising from a few pages ago, I'm going to try to explain what I mean.

Do you see how the middle, horizontal, line of the "B" intersects with the S, which is coming into it? Well, as you can see, the portion of the S, that is crashing into that middle horizontal line of the B is not STRAIGHT, but rather, it's slanted slightly downward. What I was thinking was that you could make that straight, instead of slanted, so that the middle, horizontal line of the B could look like a continuation of the S. Do you see what I mean? Then I thought you could simply make that middle, horizontal line of the B, a different color, as well as the continuation of the S.

You are right. It does look like a P in the second version, with the different colors. Thank you for your hard work. We'll wait on Eziey and I will have my decision tonight.

Thank you to EVERYONE.

Unfortunately we are absolutely torn and we had hoped to post our decision tonight, but, at this point, we simply can't decide. So, we've decided to sleep on it a day or two.

I hate to be such a pain, and, so picky, and, I hope you all don't hate me for this, but, it's your own darned faults...why do you have to be so GOOD????

Anyway, please accept this as an apology as I had planned to pick today, but, our decision is a very important one, and a very difficult one.

I'm trying to dig up the font. I've got several font disks and I'm pretty sure it's on one of them--just have to find it  Just wanted to let you know I'll get it done at some point tonight.

This is easily the toughest descision that our young company has had to make, to date. With the sheer number of wonderful entries, it was extremely difficult to narrow down to our finalists, and, with the excellence of the finalists' submissions, it was nearly impossible for us to pick a winner.

It came down to nothing more than a hunch. We took a vote and the vote was almost perfectly evenly split among the finalists (Severner, Eziey, Tonya, Bart).

We've decided, however (again, not easily so), to go with Bart and his design.

We want to thank you all for your hard work and, we wish that we could start up four different websites and use variations of each of your logos on each site, but, unfortunately, we can't, and, alas, there must be one winner.

Severner, Tonya, Eziey, and the rest of you who posted your wonderful ideas on here: Thank you for your hard work, and your countless revisions, and your talent and desire to please.

Bart, we think we are going to stick with that font, but, we would like as many options as far as colors go, as possible. We would like something similar to what we have seen so far...classy, subdued. We would also like some business card varieties/options.

We'd like you to shrink the ".com" so that it's not a big focus of the logo. And, please capitalize "pricing" in the tagline.

Thanks again, to all of you, for your wonderful hard work.
