(admin code added by Abby - 1HT19655BY9935008)

Contest Scheduled to End: 8/4/2005 – Beginning of the final week, I will try to narrow the entries down to my favorite designs. CHANGE IN PLAN 8/2 - I WILL NOT BE NARROWING DOWN THE DESIGNS, NOR CLOSING THE CONTEST TO NEW ENTRIES.

$200 to the Winner!

Hi. I need a new logo for a software consulting company - Sibley Consulting, LLC. We specialize in design and development of custom software applications.

The logo needs to be clean and professional. The company name is not that “eye-catching”, so we want the logo to do the work. I would like the primary logo to include a symbol and the name of the company – Sibley Consulting, LLC. But the symbol should be able to stand alone. I don’t have a specific thought about the symbol – it can be a design using the initials, or an abstract, ‘edgy’ design (no cartoonish designs please). Please do not include any kind of computer, keyboard, mouse, etc in the logo. I also do not have a preference for a font. I typically like a royal blue color, but I’m wide open.

I will attempt to attach a few logos that I've seen in other contests that have caught my attention.

The logo will be used for business cards, website, letterhead, shirts, etc.

The logo needs to be in vector format. I would like the .eps files.

Look forward to your designs....

Thanks for the submission. But unfortunately, this is not exactly what I'm looking for. The color is OK, but the font is a little plain. I'm looking for something that is crisp and professional - but nothing radical. The symbol is just not doing anything for me. It doesn't seem to have an edge or spark to it. Once again, thanks for the work.

ThinkKre8tiv - Welcome to the contest. The name, Sibley Consulting, was created by using my last name - Sibley. And since the company focuses on consulting work, Sibley Consulting was used. Now for the feedback - this is a pretty good start. You gave me several different choices to view, and I like that. Here goes:

Version 1 - I'm not real excited about the symbol. I'm looking for something bold, but a little more simple. This one is probably a touch too radical. I like the font, it gives a techno edge that catches my eye. But I'm not sure that it is a font that I would want to go with. Maybe if I saw it with a different symbol? Let me think about it a little and I'll get back with you.

Version 2 and 3 - I like these, Version 2 more than Version 3. I know the font is the same on both, but it looks better with the Version 2 symbol. Does the Version 2 symbol have an underlying meaning? I like it, but I feel that it's missing something. I like the tag line you included, except for the word software. Can we substitute it with a verb that means "to increase the efficiency of", "cutting edge", "streamline", etc? Maybe something like 'innovate'? Also, can we change the order to 'the new word'. design. develop. Could I see a version with the symbol to the left of the company name? I like the font with these symbols. It looks clean and professional. I like the colors in all 3 designs. And I especially like the use of different colors to separate the words and the bolding of Sibley to differentiate the words in the grayscale version. Very nice.

Fabian - I'm glad you stopped by. I definitely like your Vision design, and I can see a lot of similarity with this one. I like the use of two different fonts, two different font sizes, and left aligning 'Sibley' with 'Consulting'. That's a nice little asymmetrical look. This symbol has potential. It appears that it comes from the same "fireworks" family as the Vision Marketing symbol. However, in the Vision logo, the "fireworks" appear to be "exploding" from the text of the logo, so it all goes together. Plus, it directs your attention to the text (the company name). In this logo, the "point of explosion" is blank. Don't get me wrong, as I said earlier, I think it has potential. I'm looking forward to your next submission to see what your imagination comes up with.

here is my concept..
the icon is 2 people/face interact represents the sharing ideas/consulting/brainstorming...
the mouth of the people is created by a puzzle piece..
the initial S of sibley is in in between/the middle of them..
the two colors makes the shape of yin-yang (the balance in life symbol)

thank you..

Fabian - Good to hear the Vision design is available, that gives me a security blanket. But, I'm going to wait and see what you designers come up with.

Bogglins - I don't really care for the Yin-Yang in Version 2. I just don't think it has the professional feel that I'm looking for. But the symbol in Version 3 has potential. I like the rounded square sitting on one of the corners. I would like to "tweek" the contents. It appears that there are several S's, the color inverted at the midpoint, and the width evolves as you move from one direction to the other. Correct? I don't really think I want that many S's. Maybe an S and a C? And instead of the hard breakpoint in color, maybe try to fade it to the other color to give it a more free-flowing appearance. I like the blue color, but not the PMS 613 color. Could we change it to a cool gray or silver? And also, could I see a version with the PMS 661 blue substituted with the PMS 2935 blue from Version 2. As a general rule, I'm not against italics, but I don't think I'm for it here. To give you some more ideas, I looked at your portfolio and here's a few that I liked: Correx, FusionApps, Innercrossing Technology.

Jason - Hello Jason, welcome to the contest. I like the simplistic style, but I get the feeling that the S is about to fall over to the right. Can you stand it up on the bottom left corner? I would like the symbol to mesh, personality-wise and placement-wise, with the text a little more, or vice versa. They seem to be two different logos. I would like to incorporate one or two more colors into the design, and lighten this blue a little. Here are a few designs from your portfolio that I really like: Mazyn, West Avenue Mortgage, BumpStop.com, Core Capital Management, Forefront Media, your own logo.

ThinkKre8tiv - Version 4 is not bad. I really like the text portion of it. The tagline idea you came up with is very nice. I appreciate you adding innovate and changing the order. I really like how you snuggled it up between the y and g of the above line. I like the use of lower case and the one word "sentences" that will grab people's attention. And I like the color. But I'm not sure about the symbol. I hate to say change directions with it because there maybe something imaginative you could do with it, but as it is, I don't really think that's what I'm looking for. Same goes for Version 6 (I don't really like the placement of Version 5). I like the flow of Version 6, it looks clean and professional. If a dark navy color is used, I would like to either use a supporting color that falls somewhere between a gray and silver. Or, use a color to brighten it up, such as Version 2 and 4. As I promised in one of my earlier post, even though I like the font in Version 1, we can officially scratch it. It's just not the feel that I want for my logo.

Jason - Hello Jason, welcome to the contest. I like the simplistic style, but I get the feeling that the S is about to fall over to the right..
I was wondering how you were going to see it. If you look, the white part makes an "S" as well as the blue part. I'm guessing you are seeing the blue part. ;)

I'll make those revisions for you as soon as I have the chance. :)

Jason - Ahhh. I didn't see the white S. You got me thinking - while you're tinkering, how about trying a thin border around it and standing it on one of the corners where the white is used to make the S. Or, what are your thoughts on making the white S visible if the logo is placed on a white background?

The contest is heating up! Here goes...

Fabian - I like it. You kept everything about the text the same from the Version 1 - Good. The symbol is clean and simple. I like the colors. Two things I want to try : 1) Can we lighten the blue a shade or two. I like the Cool Grey color, so I don't want to change it. But I want to see what it looks like if there was a little more contrast between the two colors. 2) Flip the symbol so the blue makes an S instead of a backwards S.

[B]ThinkKre8tiv - I like it. We've already established the fact that I like the text portion of your design, so straight to the symbol. This symbol is the best you've sent me so far. I think we're on the right road. I don't really like the S, but I like everything else - the colors, the border around it, and especially the little orange swoosh that jumps over the border. Nice. Instead of a perfect S, I would like the contents to be a little more abstract or artsy, regardless if it's a picture, image, symbol, or letter. If you go with the letter S, can you also bring in the C from Consulting? I'm just curious how it would look. I just noticed that you've submitted Version 8 - I like Version 7 much better.

Fabian - I really like it. As I mentioned earlier, keep this one in your back pocket. But, as of right now, it still doesn't blow me away. I'm going to study it and see if it continues to grow on me. In the meantime, are there any design tricks that you have to add to it without overly complicating it. It's rather simple now, and I think that's one of the more appealing features of it. Or, do you have any other players to the throw in the game?

thinkkre8tiv - I have to say that I like it. I looks really cool, but I think that it's a little too "edgy" for my logo. I typically like the use of gradients, but I had rather the company name stand out. The more I study your submissions, I like Version 7 the best. The slash that breaks out of the border is what's setting it apart. I'm not at all saying to change directions with the use of initials, but can we substitute the S in it with something else - maybe a cityscape? I think I like the logo to the left of the text as in Version 4.

I'm not near as creative as all of you at Design Outpost, so I definitely don't want to limit your creativity. I like Version 12. I don't want to make the symbol too "busy", but is there any way to give the cityscape some depth? I really like the double slash that breaks out of the border. Nice.

thinkkre8tiv - This one is nice. I really like it. I know I asked for "innovate." to be moved to the left. But after getting some feedback from others, it was recommended that it be moved to the far right - "design. develop. innovate." Can I see a version with the symbol located to the left of the text? Thanks for your hard work!

Jason - I like the abstract S. I'm not crazy about the font of the "SIBLEY" portion of the text. Can you put the symbol to the left of the text? Typically, I'm not overly fond of a dark navy color. Can you lighten up the dark navy? I want the symbol to have a bright and clean feel, but keep it professional, i.e. no neon type colors. I just don't want the overall feel to have a dark tone to it. Does that make sense? I haven't seen any designs with an oceanic blue. I really like that color and it portrays the "feel" that I'm looking for.

I will revise it for you a little later for color and font, no problem. You probably aren't seeing musch of the lighter blues in the designs because it's not really a very "corporate" color (at least that's why I haven't ;) ). I'll use a lighter blue for you when I revise it. :)

BTW, the "S" in this post was the white portion of my last post, sorry, I forgot to mention that.

Jason - You're right about the "corporate" color. Look at the logos in my initial post. They all have a good feel to them. Even the Hyphen logo has a couple of colors to brighten up the use of dark navy. Same for the Mobility logo, it uses a royal blue. I apologize for not being able to verbalize the feeling that I'm looking for. That's why I came to you guys :) Hang in there with me and we'll figure it out. Thanks!

thinkkre8tiv - Thanks for the changes. I like the logo to the left also. They both look good. In your particular logo, I like the original colors, but I'm glad that your are trying some different things. As I've looked around at other logos, I think my color problem (that I've expressed in various other posts) is stemming from Dark Blue in combination with a Light Blue. For some reason, that doesn't seem to fit my eye. As much as I like your color combination, I may want to tinker with it for various reasons. Do you have any suggestions? As I've said, I like blue, but I'm open to just about anything as long as it continues to fit the clean, professional mold that I've described earlier.

Raja - Hello Raja, welcome to the contest. Busting into the contest with two completely different designs - awesome! Seeing different designs from the same designer really helps. On to the feedback:

Version 1.a - I like it. I really like the clean, professional, comfortable feel. Your use of many simple dots (ie. entities of data) coming together to create a nice clean design (ie. effecient software application) is very nice. My initial response was that the overall color/brightness of it was a little too faded. As I continue to study, it's growing on me. But I would like to see a version of it with a little more brightness. Maybe it's the font color that's throwing me off a bit. In a software application, when a field is disabled, the text appears "grayed out", such as this. I think that's what is stuck in my head. I really like the Cool Grey color, but probably not with the font. Can we play around with it and see what we can come up with? I'll have a better feel for the font-face after the color is changed. I like how SIBLEY is differentiated from CONSULTING. If you play around with the font-face and break the two words out to different lines, continue to differentiate the words by bolding, font-face, font-size, or all of the above. I'm not recommending to do that, but it's just to let you (everybody) know that I like the words to have a little contrast to them if you put a line-break in there.

Version 2.a - I think it's a cool logo, but I don't think it's what I'm looking for. To me, it has caring, family, charitable feel. Which are good traits, but not what I want to portray to a potential customer. But, as I said earlier, I really like that you are throwing different designs out there.

I've gone through your portfolio and and here are some designs that I really like: pixelsmart, Balance, Sting, Ghostwork Marketing, WHM (blue script), UniversalAxis, Cubist Group, searchclickz

Jason - I'm not sure my recommended color changes were the best. The top portion of the logo looks completely separated from the bottom portion now, probably because the colors are so different. But, so far, I'm not sold on the design. I hesitate to say go in a different direction, because something keeps telling me that it could be manipulated in some way to increase the WOW factor, but with my limited artistic skills, I just don't know what that is. If there's anything you want to try with it, go right ahead. If not, see if you can play off of the inspirations from your portfolio designs that I mentioned from my first feedback.

thinkkre8tiv - Ah, colors. And lots of them. I'm struggling to pick my favorite combo. I still like the original, the first one on Version 12-C (red and black), and the third one on Version 12-D. Let me continue to study. By the way, I've tried several times to check out some of your designs on your website to see if I could see anything that blows me away, but everything is "X"ed out. Is this temporary, or "site under construction"?

Raja
07-21-2005, 08:13 AM
Hello, to you too, BarSib

Thanks for the courteous feedback :D.

Here is my iteration of the S-C-Data-Bits concept. What I did to 'de-fade' the mark was remove the tansparency on the dots. I have also arranged the type as per your suggestions, I think.

BarSib
07-21-2005, 09:59 AM
Raja - I think I led you down the wrong road. I like the Version 1.a much better. The fading of the dots adds a lot of personality to the symbol. It kind of gave it an "edge". Instead of changing it, is there anything that can be added to it, around it, over it, under it, etc that will make it a little bolder, without ruining the flow of it? I also like Version 1.a better than the green square of faded dots in Version 1.b. But once again, I can't stress the fact enough, that I love it when I come to the page and somebody has posted a completely different design to go along with the revised design. I feel like your pushing me to stretch my imagination a little. Here's a thought or two that might help you come up with something, I was looking at your portfolio. One of my favorites is the Balance logo. I really like how the letters are spaced out instead of the typical spacing. Maybe we could spell Consulting similar to this, with Sibley above it, and the symbol above that? Also, I'm not sure if it will work for my type of company, but another little thing that adds a lot to the overall design is the light colored "guidelines" that you've incorporated into the Design Outpost logo. To me, that makes me think "organized" and "efficient". And the scripted WHM logo has a very professional, but creative flair to it (plus, I like the colors too). Hope this helps.

Tonya - Hello and welcome to the contest. You've entered the contest with a bang - I really like it. The first symbol has the look and feel that I want. And I really like the colors. And the font matches very well with the symbol. It's just a very nice design.
A few things I would like to change - take off the LLC. Push Sibley and Consulting together. I like for the differences in the font to differentiate the words. Can you increase the gradient in the symbol a notch or two (ie. make it a shade or two lighter on the ends)?

Tonya

Here are the requested changes. The middle version is just an alternate to show you how it would look if done in solid colors (you might need that for certain print jobs, for example).

Jason - I like this color scheme much better. The text portion looks good, but I'm not sold on the symbol portion. I'm looking for something a little more "eye-catching". As I mentioned in my initial post, the company name is not that creative - it will not entice someone to pause and investigate. I want the logo to do that. If you go with a design using letters, try to incorporate the C also.
Thanks!

Artemii - Welcome to the contest. 3 designs right out of the gate - thanks. Version 2 is just not doing it for me. I like the colors, but the overall design is just not what I'm looking for. Version 3 has a definite "techy" edge and it looks pretty neat, but once again it's probably not what I'm looking for. Excuse my short feedback on these two versions, but it's because I really like Version 1. I like how the text "plays" into the symbol, and still keeps a very clean, professional feel to it. I would prefer to change the purple to a blue - anywhere from a sky blue to a royal blue. And also, change the color of CONSULTING to a Cool Gray. Overall - a very good design.

thinkkre8tiv - Once again, I really like the tagline. But I like the previous symbol better than this one - sorry. However, I really like the use of the gradient touches.

Artemii - Thanks for the changes. I really like it. Could I see it with both colors a shade or two darker, and a shade or two lighter. Also, can we experiment a little with some gradients. I don't know exactly what I'm looking for, but it seems it's missing a little, discreet touch somewhere.

Thanks!

Artemii - I like the color scheme from Version 1.3 the best. I don't really like the two-tone version, but I like the look the gradient gives the symbol. Can you move the "light source" of the gradient to the bottom left corner? Thanks!

Everyone - Later today/tonight, I'll post a summary of where we currently are in the contest. We only have 4 more days, not including today, in the contest. If anyone else is going to join the contest, please let me know, or post a design within the next day or so.

As we head into the final 4 days, I thought it might be helpful to know where we stand. Here are my favorite designs in no certain order:

Artemii - Versions 1.8 - 1.10 are very nice. I don't have the skills to recommend anything to this design, but if you want to tinker with it, go ahead, but don't lose this version.

thinkkre8tiv - As I've said time and again, I really like the text portion of your design, especially the tagline. The way it is placed within the company name is excellent. I like the city-scape alot, but I'm starting to feel that it may be a touch to "busy" for my logo. Do you have any idea for the symbol that's a little simpler? But, just in case, don't lose the city-scape version.

Tonya - I still really like this design. I hesitate to ask you to do anything to it because I'm afraid of over complicating it. If there's anything you want to try to really push it to the forefront, I would welcome it. But don't lose Version 2.

Raja - I like Version 1.a It's got a nice flow to it, but it's a little to soft. Refer to Message #56. I think you're really on to something here and I would really like to see another design from you.

Fabian - I like Version 1 and 3. For Verion 1, refer to Message #10. Version 3 is pretty nice, it has the abstract touch, but it's missing the professional feel that I'm looking for. I would really like to see some variation of this design.

This is in no way to limit you from exploring new designs. Also, I've decided to NOT cut off the contest to new entries. I'm still open and looking. Thank-you for your entries the last couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to your entries in the final stretch run.

thinkkre8tiv - I think this is the same one (Version 13) you posted on the 29th.

Fabian - I still like the fireworks concept, it's a very nice design, but the more I study it and others, I don't think it's the look and feel I'm looking for. It's absolutely perfect for 'Vision Marketing' (I think that was the client's name). As for Version 3a, I like it, but I like the original version better. Can you add a border around it, or use a gradient, etc. just to give it a little something to create depth.

thinkkre8tiv - The symbol has several nice touches. I like the gradient in there. Good choice of color. And I like the abstract shadow at the bottom of it. But I'm not sure about the dots. Maybe there's too many of them? I don't know exactly what it is, I'm not against dots, but there's something in there that's not agreeing with me. As for the text portion, I like the previous versions better that have the tagline inserted between the y (Sibley) and g (Consulting). Sorry - I wish I could explain it a little better.

castell - Hello castell, welcome to the contest. I really like your choice of color. The symbol has a nice feel to it. I like the use of gradients - on the inside of it and on the border. That gives it depth and a nice clean feel. However, I'm not crazy about the S's. Can you play around with the contents? There are some designs with letters that I like and there are some designs with an abstract symbol that I like, so I'm open to any and all ideas. As for the text, I like the colors and I like the way you've placed them. I like the font on CONSULTING, but the font on SIBLEY doesn't look right to me. As you've probably noticed on my feedback to other contestants, I'm not the most artistic person in the world, so it's hard for me to imagine a different font and say whether it will mesh with the symbol. I almost have to see it before I can comment. Also, can we push the text portion and the symbol a little closer together? As you tinker with this design, here are some of your other designs from your portfolio that I like - Getaway Saver, Cerulean, Cre8, E Connect, UAT

castell - I like the uniqueness of the design, but as it is now I don't think that's what I'm looking for. It reminds me of the Mobility Logic logo that I posted in my intial post as an example that I really like, so I definitely think it could grow into something quite nice. In the Mobility Logic logo, I like the border around it and the two different colors on the inside of the border. Thanks.

Everyone - Unless something changes, I plan on making my selection sometime tomorrow night (~9pm US Central time).

Personally, I think that it is a strong, unique and very corporate one.

Tonya - Your design is still one of my favorites. I can't decide if the box background adds anything to it. I do like how the primary symbol breaks out of the box border, but other than that, I'm not sure it makes the logo better than Version 2 (which is very good by the way). I don't really know what to tell you to try - any ideas?

castell - Very nice. I like it. It has a very sleek feel to it. Do not lose this version, but can you play with the font of the SC a little. Since the S and C are connected, it may be tough, but I'm wandering if the font is a touch too plain for such a design. Maybe not, but I'd like to see. I like the SIBLEY CONSULTING portion of the logo. Overall, very nice!

Artemii - I think I like Version 1.9 and 1.12 the best, but they're all good. My thought process concerning the gradient - I want the gradient to be noticeable, but I don't want the edges of the symbol to be too light. I'm afraid that could cause problems with certain backgrounds. Thanks for all of the options. I'm still studying all of them.

Artemii

Thanks for the feedback! :)
Here's a versions with a quite noticable gradient yet the edges of the symbol are contrast enough, I think.
Anyway, that's what I suggest you so you can use the logo at any background - the white border and white "consulting".

This has been tough. I've gotten several designs that I really like. It's really hard for me to single out just one design. So hard that I'm not going to announce a winner until tomorrow. I need to get more feedback from a few people. As of now, here are the final 3 in no certain order:

Artemii - Version 1.14
Castell - Version 4
Tonya - Version 2

As of now, these three are dead even. They all display exactly what I'm looking for. I'll post a winner sometime tomorrow. Thank you all for your creative designs.

thinkkre8tiv - I feel like I owe a special "Thanks" to you for your hard work and high quality designs. I really like your design, but I felt the other 3 displayed a more 'corporate' feel to them. In the near future, I will be holding an additional contest, or two, and I hope you're willing to participate. Once again, Thanks!

Hello,

I have been thinking about what you said in your last reply, and I think that the design of "S" and "C" is very balanced the way it is now. The font choice is carefully premeditated to convey a sense of unity and also a coherent look.

The design in itself is a versatile one. Easily used on either horizontal or vertical alignments depending on the case. Also due to the nature of the symbol it could work on various backgrounds, without loosing essence and integrity.

Here I am showing you version of the two different alignments. Enjoy.

Sorry for the delay folks, but this has been difficult. You have given me 3 quite different logos to chose from, and each one I would be extremely happy to use to represent Sibley Consulting. I've bugged many people today to get their opinions. After careful thought, I've decided to go with Tonya's design. I appreciate the time and effort that each of you have given. I will be having another contest soon and I would love for each of you to participate.

Tonya - I'm really excited about the work you've done. I had a feeling early on that this one would be tough to beat. There are a couple of things I would like to try before the official hand-off. Talking to the many people today, I got a couple of comments from people that I would like to try.

Thanks alot. I'll be talking to you soon.

Tonya - Once again, I'm really excited about your design. It displays the exact look and feel that I was looking for. Before I ask you to do any tweeking, please make sure you have a back-up of this one. As I was getting feedback from lots of people, I had several consistent comments that it was very nice, but it was a little soft. I would like to play with the font color to add a little "strength" to it, while being careful not change the overall feel of it. Or, if you have any other thoughts that you would like to try, I would welcome it. I'm going to look around on the site and see if any ideas jump out at me. Thanks.

The size looks good. The font color looks ok, but I want to try a couple more things. On one version, change the color of Sibley to the same gray color as Consulting. On another version(s), I would like to try some other fonts. I'm assuming since the contest is over, I can reference other design submissions. If not, oh well, here goes anyway. :) I like the font that castell used. I also like the font thinkkre8tiv used, with Sibley bolded. Thanks.

Ok, now I'm confused. I really like 3 of these - Version 5, 7, and 8. There are only 2 things I want to try and I will make my mind up. On Version 8, bold Sibley instead of Consulting. The second thing I want to try is a tagline. One of the submissions in the contest, I'm sure you're familiar with it, used a tagline that I REALLY liked. It was as follows: "design. develop. innovate." in all lower-case and in a much smaller font. I would like to use it in this design. On Version 5, center it with the entire design and place it right below the current text. On Version 7, left align it with Sibley and Consulting. And on Version 8, slip it up between the tail of the y and g. I know this is a direct play on another design, but I definitely want to incorporate it into this one. I hope there's no problem with you doing this. If I like the way it looks with your design and I go with it, I will compensate thinkkre8tiv for his idea. I wouldn't feel comfortable otherwise. Thanks for your great work.

Tonya
08-10-2005, 01:18 PM
Here's version 8 (now 8a) with the boldness reversed. Before I add the tagline to any of the versions, you'll need to work out an arrangement with thinkkre8tiv because if he thought it up he owns it. So I can't use it unless he consents.

Great :) Before I prep the files, I wanted to point out that I'd done the tagline in 2 colors (with "innovate" in blue). In the small version above, I'm not sure if you could really notice it. So, here's a larger view of it:
