View Full Version : Web Definers Logo Contest - $100
(Admin code added by Palmer - 16581D)
This is a logo contest for an upcoming web project.
This site will be a web designer discussion forum/community that will have a larger focus on web design rather than programming. Forums you'd find here would deal with CSS, layouts, html, applications, web theory, site reviews, etc. We'll have a section that will have monthly articles pertaining to web design strategies and methodology. There will also be news, a career section, and web resources. Think Sitepoint but with a smaller, niche market and a focus on pushing the boundaries of design.
Pertinent Information:
Site name: Web Definers
Slogan: Why design when you can define? (May change)
Site URL: www.webdefiners.com
The logo can or can not include the slogan.
Colors are up to you, but I'd like to keep it to 3 colors or less, with 2 main complimenting colors (ex. red & black, blue & orange, etc). I'd like the logo to be professional and sleek, imaginative, with a vibrant feel. Perhaps a play on the letters or some sort of symbol? Nothing too generic, cartoony, no use of drop shadows. Please provide appropriate vector files, as this will be used for a variety of mediums.
Deadline is July 1.
Good luck my fellow designers!

Making a play on the "definition" of the word:
Thanks for the first entry, Sparks.
I like the play on words, and the colors go well together. I'd like to look into changing the hand graphic as that, combined with the dictionary-style format, reminds me of a writing site and less of a web design community. Also, the font is conservative and I'd like to lean towards something a bit more contemporary/modern. Thanks!

Hi Lang,
Thanks for your very helpful feedback :) Since you're a designer as well, can you give me an example of some fonts you like?
Hey cool cat,
I don't have any specific preferences for fonts, although I'd like to go with san serif fonts. Something sleek and prominent. Nothing bubbly, crooked, or otherwise out of the ordinary.
Where are the rest of the crazy kids on D.O.? :eye:

Hello fellow musketeers.
FTI - Good first attempt, although I believe it would look a bit noisy if it were reduced to a smaller size (meaning the lines wouldn't show up too clearly). Can you perhaps try something else?
Radical - The WD cube is nice. How about simplifying it, perhaps getting rid of that shadow underneath? The font is too video-gamish, so see if you can throw something else in it's place (think of portraying professionalism)
Remember folks, I was looking for something imaginative and original. That's why I threw this contest up, since 20 heads will always be better than 1. :)

My revised entry :)
Thanks for the continued effort, friends. :)
Radical - The WD symbol looks cleaner now, which is great. I'd like to compact everything together and eliminate the horizontal real estate this baby is covering. Can you place the words under the symbol and make them smaller so that we have a nice package? I still didn't see any fonts that I latched to. You got any others along that style? Can you also try an orange/yellow combination? Thanks.
FTI - The lines somehwat lose their sharpness when you reduce the image size. Your wording and font style is good, but I just can't fall in love with that web symbol you got going. Reminds me of what we used to hang around our porch during Halloween. Anything else less spooky? :)
Sparks - Thanks for getting rid of the symbol. It's still missing something that jumps out at you and I'm not what that could be right now. Can you add something to grab some more attention? Thanks again! :)

Simple, stylised D.
Thanks for your first entry. It's a good start. I like the stylized D, but I feel we're still missing the W. Can you somehow incorporate a W into that circle with the same perspective angle and style? The attached graphic shows the placement. Thanks! :)

3 new looks

Thanks all for the continued efforts!
Sparkie - I think that symbol may be a bit too abstract - does it mean something that I'm missing?
j-d - Looking better, but the W still isn't aligned with the vanishing point. Can you try some different variations of a W if it doesn't take up too much time?
FTI - The 3rd one stands out the most, probably because of the iconic style symbol. Any way you could incorporate letters into that sphere, or perhaps shape the lines to do so?Thanks again! :)

Sparkies symbol is the USB symbol I think

Hey J :)
Okay, I like the alignment of the second one. The current logo has two blue rings - can you make a third inner ring that is black, and then have a dot in the middle of that to form the complete W (kinda like the style of the fifth one). I'd like the W to be formed out of a similar ring as the two existing ones. Hope that isn't confusing.

Hi Lang.
Here are a few ideas.
Thanks
- Ed
Okay, thanks again for everyone's continued dedication. Let's get to the nitty gritty:
JD - That's looking pretty good. The only thing I can see changing now is the font. Something contemporary and easy to brand, and more importantly, goes with the feel of the circle symbol.
Rad - Your third design and the color look good. Is there some way to make the WD more rounder in appearance, as if it was perhaps cut out of a sphere, and maybe tone down the colors? It's a bit too boxy, and still comes across as video-gamish to me. I'd like something to appeal to a professional crowd.
Martin - Thanks for jumping into the fray. I definitely like the styles of your logos because they come across as simple and easy to brand. Also, you've managed to take into account the sleek and contemporary look I was after. I like the third one, as it's easy on the eyes. Are there any other possible variations of that same style?
Ejlain - Thank you for entering as well. The first three are a bit busy, but the last one shows some promise. Can you do some variations on that idea, as well as working with some brighter colors? Please accept my gratitude for your time and energy. :)

Hmm, not sure what you meant by tone down the colors but....
That curved look is definitely nicer! I apologize for not clearly conveying what I meant about the colors. Can you please remove any gradients since they don't look so good when the image is reduced, and use colors with less saturation.

With revisions...what do you think?

Okay...
I met with my partner for the upcoming site, and after a lengthy discussion over a few rounds of beers, we've decided to go with RadicalSEED's latest design. We really loved them all and it was extremely difficult to choose the winner. However, we felt that this design best combined the qualities that was initially posted: professional, sleek, imaginative, and vibrant.
A big thanks for everyone else's time and effort during the contest.

Wow! Thanks! Sorry about the late reply. I was very irresponsible and I too was having a lengthly discussion with a friend, except he happened to spill a nice frosty one directly onto my keyboard. No more drinks in the office! So I need some time to get it cleaned up and as soon as I do I'll get the file to you.
Thanks again.
