$300 to the Winner…
We are re-branding our company and need a new logo for our online business, DeCalo Fashion. We sell high-end designer men’s suits, dress shirts, slacks and neckties at 40-80% below retail. Brands we carry include Zegna, Canali, Armani, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole and others.
The new logo has to be clean, classy, professional and memorable. Our company name is not very “eye-catching” or memorable so we need the logo to do much of the work (many mistake our name for DeCaRlo). We would like the logo to include our name as well as a symbol that can stand alone. The symbol should be meaningful and synonymous with our brand. It can be a design using our initials, an abstract design (perhaps of a suit, shirt collar, necktie, etc.), or anything else you guys/gals can come up with. We don’t have a tagline but are open to suggestions…
We do not have ANY font preferences and are wide open to any color combinations. The logo will be used on our website, eBay auctions, business cards, letterheads, print media, shipping labels/boxes, etc.
There are so many logos that we love here at the outpost. Attached is just a small selection of logos from previous contests that have caught our attention. We are continuously blown away by the incredible talent here and are looking forward to your entries…
Happy designing!!!

Hi, Eran :)
A question for you: you say you'd like the image part of the logo to be synonimous with the brand, but what exactly does your name mean? :)
Thanks!

here is my concept for you..
since DeCALO is offering a high-end fashion collection, i decided not to make a playful/iconic logo.. this also to keep people focusing on the name, but in correct spelling for sure.. :)
so, my approach is to capitalize the "CALO".. and do something to that..
i reduced the size of "fashion" ..to make the logo is suitable/flexible in the future just in the case you decided to change it or add more word, "fashion & jewelery" for instance..
thanks!

AlexKogan - Welcome to our project! The name "DeCalo" is simply my last name. It has an Italian sound to it and since we sell a lot of Italian brands, we just went with it. I guess other than that, it has no meaning!

Wow, we are totally blown away by the talent here… Thank you for all the fabulous entries so far. First a few common thoughts/suggestions (individual comments are below):
- We think we’re leaning towards deep colors (black, burgundy, maroon, deep blue, browns, etc.)
- We would love it if someone tried making the “l” or “i” into a tie… Not sure what it would look like but maybe someone wants to give it a go.
- Anyone willing to try an abstract line sketch of a shirt collar, a tie, or a suit. It can be straight lines or wavy ones.
bogglins (version 1) – Love the deep colors and the way you capitalized the word “CALO”. “Fashion” looks great below… Reminds me slightly of Tab Cola for some reason. Can you play around with the fonts in DeCalo (a bit more upscale)?
Bill (version 1) – The gentleman is awesome! Love the way he looks. The font selection I am not crazy about. It needs to be a bit deeper and bolder. I’m also not sure if the man overpowers the words… Can the man be scaled down a bit so that the logo is more proportional?
graphixparanoid (version 1) – Wow that’s a cool use of the “DC”. Perfect icon that looks great standing on its own! When I first looked at it looked like “CD” is there anyway to reverse that? I don’t like the font much and would like a deeper font the pops more. There is also no spacing between the De and Calo. I’d like to see other color variations (deeper colors like burgundy, maroons, deep blues, hunter green, etc.).
Jason (version 1) – Thanks for the submission! Very simple indeed; perhaps too simple though! I love the logos you did for “Sabio Digital”, “Jaide”, “Cribs” “lower my quote”, “Core”, and “BD Properties”. Would you be willing to try something along those lines?
Jason (version 2) – Now that’s creative! Unfortunately, a bow tie isn’t really us (too black tie-ish). I really love the mirror imaging of the DC. Reminds me a lot of D&G (Dolce & Gabbana). Maybe we can use that symbol w/out the circle in the middle. A little more color perhaps?
thinkre8tive (version1) – Love it! Would like to see other color variations… Reminds me a lot of the “adidas” font (was that your inspiration?). Can the “fashion” move a tad bit to the left and also is there anything you can do to make it a bit less simplistic?
thinkre8tive (version2) – How cool! I love how the De, Calo & Fashion are in 3 different colors. The tie between the DC is very clever and I like it. Would it be possible to shrink it down a little so that it isn’t so overpowering. Can we try deeper colors…
thinkre8tive (version3) – A little too flashy for us… reminds me of Vegas! Not our style but thanks. The other versions were more inline with our needs.
thinkre8tive (version4) – Nice submission… A little too much "fun in the sun" for us.. Reminds me of a surf theme. Let’s try deeper more elegant colors instead of the tropical ones. Can you remove the “f” from within the “C”…
Paula23 (version 1) – This looks amazing; however, it might be a bit too delicate and fragile for our needs. The 2nd is better than the first since it doesn’t have the shadowing effect. Not too crazy about the green used. I like the vertical line but don’t like the vertical placement of the word “fashion”.

Raja (version 1) - We're excited you decided to join our project. Your logo is very elegant and classy. Nice to see one w/out the word fashion! Can we see different color variations and the word "DECALO" bolder/deeper? How would it look with lower case "dc" and perhaps w/out the box?

Wow, this project is generating some great concept! I am so excited. We decided that the word "fashion" should be part of the logo (the domain name www.decalo.com is taken). What do you guys think of a line drawing of a rolled-up necktie (see http://static.forzieri.com/images/popupgrandi/fz01014-024-3a.jpg). Here are my comments:
Paula23 (version 2) – Now that's what I'm talking about! Love the line drawing and want to see more like this!!! Okay, this is a great sketch, but can you add a tie to it and make it slightly less abstract? Also, it may be too hard to make out what used as a small logo. So, my suggestion is to concentrate on a closer area (e.g. Lapel, Collar & tie knot, etc.) We are not crazy about the font you used for DeCalo (the broken "e" and "a" are not doing it). Can you use other font combination? I like the word fashion against the solid box so maybe incorporate that as well.
Paula23 (version 3) – Not crazy about this one. Too busy, I like version 2 better but with the changes noted!
Fabian (version 1 & 2) – Very clever use of the men! I personally would not have seen it w/out your comment! I like version 2 better than version 1.
Thinkkre8tive (version 1-A) – Thanks for the different color variations! I like it better with the word "fashion". We really like version 2 and would like to see the changes from our previous comment. Can you try and spread out the DC a bit more…
DesignGeneral (version 01 & 02) – Thanks for listening to our suggestions! We like version 2 better than 1. But overall are not crazy about how it shaped up…
DesignGeneral (version 03) – I love the font you used!!! It is one of the nicest. The symbol, however, isn't doing it for us! Can we try a different mark and introduce the word "fashion"?
Jason (version 2a) – Much better but I just can't seem to get DG (Dolce & Gabbana) out of my head (not sure if that's a bad thing)!

After seeing many of your great submissions, we are leaning towards the ones that utilize upscale fonts (not bold or bunched up). We like the overall look to be elegant, upscale, luxurious, and most importantly memorable. Keep in mind that many of our suits, dress shirts, and neckties are high-end European & Italian brands… We want our brand to reflect that… Keep the great submissions coming…
thinkkre8tiv (version 2A) – Version 2 is better than version 2a. We still think that the "DC" is too big! Also, can you find a way to make the overall look a bit more upscale & elegant (perhaps using different font sets)?
Bill (version 2 & 3) – The size of the guy is much better and I think I like him better on the left side. Nice font in version 3, but I would like to see the word "DeCalo" more spread out (it's too bunched up)! Finally, can you make the guy lean or rest his elbow on the letter "D"…
DesignGeneral (version 04 & 05) – Thank you for the new revisions. The font you used is great but the tie incorporated as a letter is not working for me. Let’s keep the font but work on some other variations (see our general comments above).
Carl (version 1-a) – Thanks for your submissions and for joining our project! The closet and "Your Wardrobe" is not doing it for me. BUT… and there is always a but, the font used in the DeCalo Fashion is absolutely brilliant. I'd like to see it in other deep color variations like burgundy, deep blue, etc. and perhaps with a different mark or an icon.
graphixparanoid (versions 2 & 3) – While your icons are awesome, they just don't fit who we are. After seeing some of the other submissions we are leaning towards something more upscale, classy & elegant (hint hint)…
paula23 (version 4) – The line drawing is much better. Can we see it w/out a head and perhaps with a left shoulder so that it becomes better incorporated with the word "DeCalo". I'd love to see it in other deep and elegant colors…
paula 23 (version 5) – Thanks for the "close-up" line drawing… Not sure I like the jacket extending down that far (it reminds me of a kite). We prefer the drawing in version 4 better and are open to more of your fabulous line sketches...

Okay, as the end nears, it's time to clue you guys in on what logos we like best so far. Bill (v2&3), Raja (v1), Tonya (v1), and Skyvee (v1) are amongst our favorites. But, we need to see more as not one has swept us off our feet. These are simple, clean, elegant and upscale just like our products! There is no need to complicate things... Simple is good! We like rich & deep colors like deep blues, black, grays, and reds (#990000 & #660000). We DO NOT like purples, greens, browns, or oranges. While we like marks comprised of the "DC" we would love to see some made up of the "DF". Keep the ideas coming…
DesignGeneral (version06) - I can't seem to balance the thin lines used in the "DC" and the thick one used in the underlining the word fashion. Maybe the line can be one single continuous stroke starting from the "C". Not sure I like the black vertical line in the "C" looks too much like a backwards "D". I would love to see more ideas from you heading in this direction.
AlexKogan (version 01 & 02) – Alex, thanks for joining the project. The pocket square/pocket concept was nice but a bit too ambiguous. We are not crazy about the logo overall. Would love to see some other ideas from you… We need the word "fashion" to be part of the logo!
Skyvee (version 01) – Very nice! Simple, clean, upscale and elegant. This is the direction we'd like to see EVERYONE taking. Is there an inspiration behind the "A"? I need to see this one is other colors (deep red, navy blue, etc.). The word "fashion" might be a bit too dim, can you make it "pop" a tad bit more? Also, can the letters be spaced out a tad bit?
Bill (version 4) – We don't like the man leaning on the words, he's better further away. Nice job spacing the letters out. We like it!
Paula23 (version6) – Like it better w/out the head but as the project evolves, we're starting to like the more simple & elegant logos. The colors are also a bit muted and not very "rich"! I would absolutely love to see more ideas from you in this direction. You were on to something in your first submission minus the symbol and the colors!
Paula23 (version7) – Clever concept (suit sleeve & cuff) but it's too busy for us!
Thinkkre8tive (version6) – I don't really like this new one. The original one with the tie as part of the letters worked better but probably not for us. I would love to see a few more concepts from you.
Tonya (version1) – YES! I was hoping you would join and now I know why! Simple, clean, upscale, elegant, us! Is there a meaning behind the mark? Can we see some more rich colors and perhaps more ideas along these lines…
Graffsimmo (version 01 & 02) – Thank you for joining our project! While very creative, your logos aren't the right ones for us. There is too much going on!
Simple, Clean, Elegant and Upscale....

Carl (version 2-A) – Thanks for taking another crack at it… We still like the font but the cufflinks aren’t right. See if you can come up with a new “mark” or “symbol”. We are leaning towards ones that use our initials (DC for DeCalo or DF for DeCalo Fashion).
Grafissimo (version 3) –We don’t like the vertical orientation of the “DE” and think that DeCalo should be kept together. This one isn’t the right one for us!
Trysen (version 1) – Nice and clean but we’re not crazy about the font in the word “fashion”. We’re leaning towards designs that have a mark or symbols along with the text.
Skyvee (version 02) - The red looks a bit too pinkish and we’d prefer a deeper red but overall this is still one of our favorites. It looks really nice against the dark background! The word “fashion” is better now! We’d love it if you can incorporate a symbol or a mark to the left of the logo of an abstract “DF” or “DC”. With a good mark, this can very well be the one!!!
ThinkKre8tiv (version 7) – Nice thought but too bold and for us!
ThinkKre8tiv – (version 7)- This one looks too much like a window to us. Not the look we’re going for!
Paula23 (version 8) – Clean logo! The fonts are great but the mark is a bit too boring for us!
Paula23 (version 9) - Very nice!!! Classy, clean, and elegant… It would be great for our private label signature collection but not for our company logo. As it is, people often misspell our name; the script font will probably only add to the confusion.
Paula23 (version 10) – Yes! Definitely one of our favorite logos submitted so far in the project (top 3). The mark/symbol is genius!!! Couple of requests:
- Can you add another one or even two more dots to the “D” so that is breaks it up a bit more and so that the “F” pops out more.
- Can we see the “DF” enclosed in a dark background circle (with a light color font).
- Can we see the DF symbol moved to the left/right of the text so that the logo isn’t so tall. We are not sure if this will destroy the balance and symmetry.
- Do you think the DF symbol can replace the letter “D” in the word “DeCalo” or will that confuse people?
With the right colors and small tweaks this one has a real good shot!
Creaturacreative – (version 2&3) – Thank you for your new submissions. At a first glance, the suits looked like skyscrapers to us (maybe because we’re from New York City). This isn’t the one for us!
AlexKogan – (version 3) – It’s clean and nice but not for us! The mark reminds me of a college graduate (cap & gown). It also forms the letter “Y” which I don’t love! Overall it’s really good but not one of our favorites!
AlexKogan (version 04) – Neat and clean and once again perfect for our signature private label collection but not for our company logo. We just don’t think a signature font will work for our main font (perhaps for a mark or symbol).
scnickerdoodlestudios – (version 1) – Thanks for joining our project! Very cool looking symbol but the font and overall look is too bold for our company! If you can soften things up a bit (more upscale font, classier look, more elegant), you might be on to something. Would love to see more from you!
Here is a text based icon using all three letters.

Hi Designers,
Thank you for the extremely creative and imaginative submissions so far. Unfortunately, only a few are headed in the direction we want. A large part of this is due to the fact that we may have steered you in the wrong direction early on as we did not know exactly what we were looking for (thank you for showing us the light).
After browsing some of the other projects currently posted here, we couldn’t help but notice some of the fabulous design concepts in the SilverBasement project. Like SilverBasement, we’re looking for a logo that is clean, crisp, classy, simple and elegant. We would like to see the letters “DF” used in our mark/symbol (text-based icon). Attached below you will see some of the SilverBasement logos that have caught our eye (we like the ones with the text-based icon to the left). We would absolutely love to see more submissions along these lines and have decided to extend the project’s deadline an additional week.
Thanks for your creativity, patience, and above all your hard work. Looking forward to some more great designs!

thinkkre8tiv (version 9, 10, 11) – Thanks for the new submissions… While we do like “text icons” we’d prefer an overall look that is less bold, more abstract and a bit classier.
paula23 (version 10) – We love revisions B&C and they are now quite possibly the front runners in this project! We’re not really digging the green and orange colors but the concept is near flawless!
eziey (version1) – Thanks for joining our project! We were hoping you would… Your text icon is awesome. Reminds us a lot of the “D” that Diesel uses… We like the look of the icon enclosed in a shape (like Paula23)… Would you be able to do that?
Jason (version3) – Thanks for another submission. The icon is nice but a bit too abstract for us! The font is just too simple and plain. I guess that’s your style and it may not work for us.
Tonya
07-24-2005, 09:51 AM
Tonya (version1) – YES! I was hoping you would join and now I know why! Simple, clean, upscale, elegant, us! Is there a meaning behind the mark? Can we see some more rich colors and perhaps more ideas along these lines…
The symbol is my version of a Fleur-de-lis, which is a stylized lily. The basic symbol itself has been around for centuries and has often been assocated with royalty and power (ancient Rome and Egypt, French, Scottish and English monarchies, for example). It seemed fitting for DeCalo.
I'll see if I can come up with an alternate design. In the meantine, here are a few color options:

Tonya (version 2) – Thanks for the explanation of your inspiration! I had a feeling it was connected to something royal… At this point no further revisions are necessary for this design. We’d love to see more ideas from you (especially ones incorporating the “df” letters)
graphixparanoid (version 4, 5, 6) – Thanks for the new ideas! We are not crazy about the “marks”. We prefer symbols that incorporate our initials “DF” and NOT “DC” or “DCF”. Also, there should not be a space between De & Calo. Please keep your fabulous designs coming …
Jason (version 3) – I spent a few more minutes gazing at your last logo and your symbol is growing on me. Was it your intent to have every letter in the word “decalo” in the symbol or am I looking too deep into it? Regardless, it would be great if you can revise the font a tad bit (it’s just too plain) and perhaps throw the symbol in a dark shape (like a circle)…

The mark was to be "DCF" combined. I had also noticed that it seemed all of the letters of "DeCalo" were involved. I would never had mentioned it though because you probably would thought I was nuts. ;)
The symbol is actuall made from a font ("C"), slightly rotated and skewed. I had drawn it out by hand, then noticed this font would work better as the lines of it seemed to look a bit nicer.
I changed the layout and the font, so maybe you will like this version a little better.
The mark did not look good inside of a circle so I left that off, but I am trying to think of another way to to accomlish putting it inside of something.
I am also working on anther idea. I'm hoping to have it for you by tomorrow. :)

This is a bit on the abstract side, but there is a D and an F in there :)

First, I have to say that the latest submissions we’ve been getting from everyone are definitely heading in the right direction. Thanks for all your hard work…
Eziey (version 2) – Thanks for the revision… I’m just not sure about this one. Something about it doesn’t portray the high class and elegance of the products that we sell. The DeCalo font is a bit too dated for me while the icon is a bit too much in “motion”.
Jason (version 3a) – Your designs are definitely growing on me. Despite their simplicity, they invoke a feeling of elegance and high-class. Regardless of which letters are included in your latest creation, I think the “look & feel” is the right one! I’m not certain that the latest orientation would work for our website (we may opt to go with a thin header) but I’m sure these details can be hashed out should we decide to go with your design. If you have other concepts, we’d love to see them!
Tonya (version3) – This is nice and I think I prefer this look over your previous submissions. The font and colors are dead on! The icon is very interesting and could work quite well. I need to come back to this one!
Graphixparanoid (version 7) – Your concepts are definitely moving in the right direction. I’m a bit concered that the icon in this logo resembles a musical note… Not sure that this is the direction we’re looking to take… Keep your great ideas coming…

QuirkDesign (version1) - Thanks for joining our project! Your icon is very creative but it overpowers our name. The orange almost makes it look like fire flames. We're looking for something slightly more balanced. I don't exactly get the feeling of high-class, elegance, and luxury... Would love to see something along those lines from you.

Yes, those things can be worked out regardless of the designer chosen. The minor changes happen in revisions. :)
On to the next design...
I went very simple with this one. I put emphisis on the "e" since it it an online business (but nobody else has to know that ;) ) and kep it so the "De" can stand on it's own if needed.

Sorry for not responding to some of the new posts sooner. My partner is on vacation and I have been swamped (I am sure everyone here can relate). As the project’s deadline is nearing, I thought I’d let you in on our favorite submissions thus far… In no particular order, they are Raja’s (where are you?) version 1.a (message #18), Bill’s version 3 (message #33), Paula23’s version 10 (message #77), Jason’s version 3 (message #90).
There is still some days left in the project so if you have some more ideas, please feel free to submit them. Remember, we’re going after a very sophisticated, elegant, classy, timeless look & feel. Check out the fonts used in the logos of some of the brands that sell (see www.armani.com, www.zegna.com, www.canali.it, www.palzileri.it, etc.). Our mark/symbol should be simple and clean…
QuirkDesign (version 2) – Thanks for the revision! It is an improvement over the previous version but still not what we’re looking for. We just can’t seem to find a balance between the symbol and the font. The overall look doesn’t scream high-class, elegant, and luxurious menswear.
Jason (version 4) – Thanks for yet another creative creation! I love the elegant font you used and would love to see a similar font used in your version 3 (our favorite version of yours so far). We are not crazy about the displaced “e”. We’d still like to see the symbol in version 3 enclosed (not free standing). Got anything else up your sleeve?
thinkkre8tive (version 12) – Thanks for yet another submission. Unfortunately, this isn’t the look we’re going for. The font and symbol are too bold as is the overall look & feel. We’re looking for something a bit more elegant and timeless! This is probably a bit too cutting-edge for us.
Skyvee (version 3) – Thanks Alvin, your logo is polished and complete. We like it!
Schnickerdoodle_Studios (version 2 & 3) – Thanks for the new submission we are looking for something a bit more subdued! The colors, fonts, and symbols that are used in your design are a bit too cutting-edge and modern. We’d like to see you tone things down a bit.
Version 4...
I used the "C" to create a filagree circle to encompass the DF icon.

Sorry about the delay. While it was not an easy decision, we chose Jason's V3 as the winning design. A big thank you to all the talented designers that have submitted logo concepts.
Jason, we do have a few revisions so where do we go from here?
