Hello. First, I would like to thank you for all of your time and help. I need a design for my new Web site. The Web site is called Ask the Decorator. It is a brand new company. Therefore, I do not have a logo, slogan or color scheme.

The Web site’s Function:

The Web site will serve as a database of information about decorating. It will discuss everything from how to choose colors for your living room to which countertops are best for a kitchen. The articles will serve as a reference point for those who wish to redecorate their house themselves or need direction when hiring an interior decorator.

Target Audience:

The majority of my Web site’s users will be women the ages of 25-65.

Color Scheme:

Currently I do not have a color scheme in mind. I am open to almost all color schemes at the moment. I do not particularly like pink or purple. I do not want the colors to look overly bright or overly muted. The feel of the colors is more important to me. I would like them to be sophisticated, classy, cozy and comfortable.

The Web site’s Format:

The Web site will contain many articles written by me. Each article will be roughly 500 words in length and will contain about two pictures. I will be using Article Manager to run the Web site. If you would like to see how Article Manager works go to www.interactivetools.com. Article Manager also has a list of featured clients at http://www.interactivetools.com/products/articlemanager/clients.html. Currently, I do not like any of the Web sites that article manager listed as featured clients. Please look at Article Manager’s specifications to make sure your design will work with the software.

The major categories should be listed on the left hand side of the Web page. A search bar should be above the categories. The major categories are:
• Accessories
• Ceilings
• Decorating Techniques
• Decorating Styles
• Floors
• Furniture
• Lighting
• Patios and Decks
• Walls (subcategories: Wallpaper, Paint, Fabric, Trim)
• Windows and Doors
• Rooms (sub categories: Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Basements, Dining Rooms, Entrance Halls, Hallways, Kitchens, Laundry Rooms, Living Rooms, Offices, Sunrooms)

The subcategories should only be seen when the mouse is on top of the main category.

Contact Information, Background Information and a Products link should also be included on the Web site.

Web site Font and Spacing:

I would like the Web site’s body type to be easy to read. I do not want the text to look jumbled. For example, if you had a 12 pt font, I would want it to have a 13 or 14 pt leading. I would also like to make sure that everything on the Web site has adequate spacing. I would like the eye to have breathing room; however, I do not want there to be so much space that the page looks disconnected.

Web site’s Feel:

I want the Web site to be classy, elegant, clean and extremely easy to navigate. I do not want the Web site to look sterile or corporate. It should be warm, inviting and trustworthy. It should not look like it is trying to sell anything. It should give people a sense of luxury and a sense of coziness at the same time. It should be appealing to all demographics whether they like a modern or classic style. When a user opens the Web site they should feel like they are opening the most informative and well designed resource on decorating.

Web sites I Like:

Below I have listed some examples of Web sites that have certain qualities I like. I think that most of these Web sites are a bit more fancy and elegant than I want mine to be. But I think they have somewhat of the feel I am looking for.

http://www.grandwailea.com/about/default.asp
That Web site has a border around the content. I like the border, but I do not like how large it is. I think this helps the eye relax while viewing the page and gives the page a look of simplicity and sophistication. I do not like how small the font is on top of the picture. I think navigation buttons should be easily noticed and read. I also do not like how their text is fuzzy.

http://www.fourseasons.com/accommodations/index.html
I like the simplicity of the Four Season’s Web site. It has nice lines and uses photos both beautifully and strategically.

http://www.philpotts.net/start.html
That Web site is different than all of the other Web sites I have listed. I like its slightly modern and classy feel. I don’t like everything about this Web site; however, a combination of that Web site’s feel with the others is close to what I am looking for.

http://www.ritzcarlton.com/home.asp
I think the Ritz Carlton’s Web site is very sophisticated and easy too read. It uses font well; although, I’m not sure whether I would want to use script or not. I also think the layout looks crisp and clean.

Competitor’s Web sites:

The Web sites below are not true competitors, but they are the closest to being competitors. I do not like either of those Web sites. I do not want the design of my Web site to look like those.

www.hgtv.com

http://www.askadecorator.com/

Images to Use on the Site:

Currently I do not have any images for the Web site. If you would like to have an image of me, I can post a professional picture by the end of the week.

Images most suitable to the Web site would be ones of beautifully decorated bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.

Deadline:

The deadline will be August 15 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Deliverables:

I am looking for HTML coding but I would like it in Continuous Style Sheet so that it is easy to change multiple pages at the same time. I would like to have two different pages designed. One page should be the home page and one should be the content page. The two pages should look identical except for the middle content of the page. To better explain this I have attached a template for you to follow. Basically, I would like to have two side bars and a masthead or nameplate (I call it a masthead or nameplate because I am used to magazine and newspaper design. I am not sure what it is called in Web design). Then under the masthead and between the two side bars will be pictures for the homepage and words for the content pages. To better understand what I mean you can go to www.askthebuilder.com. This Web site works much like mine will need to. However, I hate its design.

Thank you very much for your help and time. I look forward to seeing your designs. If you need any more information or have any questions please post them. I will be checking in frequently to give suggestions. Thanks once again!

Best regards,

Meghan

Will you attach the picture of yourself that you mentioned?

I went ahead and completed a design so that I can get some feedback rolling from you. I reserved a space in the middle of the graphic in the center of the page for a picture of you. I have incorporated all of the elements you requested.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Jereme,

Your template looks great! I was really amazed by it! It has a wonderful feel to it. The textures you used are amazing. The colors are very rich and inviting. I really must say that it looks great.

My only critiques are mainly organization problems. As much as I love the bar you created with the pictures in it, it has to go. The place where the picture bar is, is prime real estate on a Web site. My eyes first went to the bar, then they went to the Ask the Decorator Bar, then to the search button and last to the categories. Instead I need peoples’ eyes to first go to the search or the article and then to the Ask the Decorator bar. (Sorry for the long explanation.)

So basically what I need is for you to enhance the Ask the Decorator Bar so that it is the appealing part, delete the picture bar and move everything else up. Also the search bar needs to be moved to right above the categories (Although I loved the way you did the search bar. I wish it didn't need to move. The reason why I would like it moved, is because in a recent new study it was shown that the most profitable place for a search bar is on the left hand side about 1/4 to a 1/3 of the way down.)

Also, if you could choose a different font for the Ask the Decorator, that would be great. I like the font you have, but I feel it is a bit modern and sterile.

In regards to the picture, I should have it to you by Friday. Unfortunately, I will not be able to have the picture taken until Friday due to conflicting schedules. It will be a head shot. I will offer a few different pictures in which I wear different shirts to make it easy to match colors. Sorry for the delay. If you want you can include the picture I will be sending on Friday in the Ask the Decorator Bar like the www.askthebuilder.com Web site does or it can be placed only in the about us section. My only thoughts on adding the picture to the Ask the Decorator Bar, was that it might add credibility to the content. But whatever you think looks and works best.

I really want to stress how much I enjoyed your design. Everyone I showed it to really liked it and was very impressed. I really like the way you did the categories. The way you faded things is great. The lines separating the side bars are awesome. It really is great. I'm sorry that I need things moved, because I really do like the way it is.

Thank you so much for your help!

If you have any questions at all, please post them.

Best wishes,

Meghan Carter

Thanks for the excellent feedback. It is very useful.

I have made revisions.

Adding photographs anywhere really, is going to draw attention to wherever they are. Do you not want to add any photographs?

I think this version is real close to exactly what you had in your Word file.

If you need more revisions or changes, just let me know.

Jereme,

You have nailed the layout!!! That is exactly how it needs to be. I really like the way you have put it together. I was wondering if you could now jazz it up a bit. I think I liked the tan background better for the Ask the Decorator part because it almost made it look like it was sparkling; however, I really like the red as an accent color also.

I would like the Ask the Decorator font to have more character. Right now it is incredibly plain. I don't want it to be overly elegant. I somewhat liked the feel of the first font you choose. I basically want a font that stands out as being something that is beautiful, sleek and classy. I would prefer that it isn't cursive. But it can flow somewhat like cursive. I just don't want it to be too feminine. Also, if the tagline underneath could be a different font that would be great. I would like the tagline and the Ask the Decorator to fit well together. I would love for the Ask the Decorator part to be eye catching and seem to be as classy as the sparkling tan background.

I like the way you have done the search. It looks very clean. If you could add a bit of an elegant feel to it that would be amazing. I agree with you that if you have too much texture it will be over kill. So I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for. I just know that the feel I want is for it to be more polished.

In regards to the pictures, I plan to put pictures in where you have the text right now. For the home page there would be a picture where the text is and there would be no text. For content pages, I would have a headline like magazines do and then I would have text and a picture underneath. The pictures on the content pages would be a half column picture with half a column of text beside it (and of course the text would then continue underneath the picture). The pictures would also have captions underneath. The content pages will look much like a newspaper of magazine layout. Basically the top part and the two side bars will never change. The only part that will change is the middle of the page.

Again, your design is great. I really appreciate all of your help!!!

Thank you so much!

Meghan Carter

Here are some refinements for my design.

I had to add one photo in there. :-) It can always be removed.

Let me know what other revisons and changes you would like to see and I will be happy to work on them.

I think the font I used in the header is more suitable. It's not script, but it flows better than the last one I used.

Jereme,

This last design looks great. I like the touches you have added. The new font is good. I definitely like the tan color for the top better. I only have a few minor critiques.

Do you think it is possible to make the search bar thinner? It seems like it takes up a lot of space. I don’t want it drastically thinner. Just so that it doesn’t take up so much of the most viewed part of the Web page. Also, I think the Ask the Decorator top bar still needs some more interest. I agree with you that it seems bland. I like the color. Do you think it needs more color, a picture, a more stylized font or maybe some type of graphic or texture? I don’t know what it needs to be honest. I want it to look seamless and clean, but I also want it to be eye catching. I was also wondering if you could possibly make the categories bar a little thinner also. I would like the content section to be a bit bigger.

Thanks so much for your help! You are doing an amazing job and I really like your design!

Best wishes,

Meghan

I want to thank everyone for their designs! They all look great!

After much thought over the weekend, I have decided that my picture must be placed in the top bar somewhere close to the Ask the Decorator. I believe that adding my picture will make my site more credible.

I have attached a couple pictures for you to choose from. I am sorry that I am so unphotogenic. I tend to freeze around cameras. I would prefer that you take out the background of the pictures. There was such good lighting outside on the day I had the pictures taken, that we ended up taking them outside.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all.

I appreciate all of your feedback and designs!

Thanks so much!!!!

Meghan

Aliska,

Thanks for entering! I really like the way you have organized things! I like the way you incorporated the picture in the top bar. I think you have done a great job!

I don’t really like the colors. I would like something classier and less modern. I also feel the logo is a bit too modern, but I really like your creativity! I also don’t really like the bullets in front of the categories.

Other than that I think you design looks great! Thanks once again!

Best regards,

Meghan

Jereme,

I like how you made the search engine part smaller. I still don’t like the font. I’m sorry. I know I’m terribly picky. I think that the picture that I will be attaching will help you bring the top bar together.

Thank you so much! Your work is great!

Best regards,

Meghan

Anne,

I really like your design! You did an excellent job of capturing the feel I wanted! I definitely liked your first template better than the second. I like the way you extended the bars.

I am really looking forward to seeing how you incorporate my photo into your design.

My only critique for the moment is that I think the part with the Ask the Decorator needs to be a little flashier. I like the way you have the oval. I know I said that I don’t want any script, but with your lay out, I think it would work. Since your layout is so clean and crisp, a flowing script might work really well. But I’m not positive. I think it would have to have tight leading and that the words would fit together well. I like the way you have put the Ask the above the Decorator. That would work really well with a script.

Thanks once again!

Best regards,

Meghan

Since I am not a logo designer this is probably the best I can do and I am sorry to say but I don't know what script you're talking about :)

Hi here is my idea. I wanted to give it a sense of detail and a warm style. There is lot of space for the content but the version with square corner increases the sense of space also. I know I opened my ideas a little from the main draft but wanted to show you something different. Nevertheless all the details can be worked, just point the finger to what you like or what you don't. :D

Will,

I like how you changed my layout. I think your design looks really good. I definitely like the rounded corners better. I feel it flows better with the design. You did a great job of making the page look warm and inviting!

I must say that I am not too crazy about the font for the Ask the Decorator or the bullet points before the categories.

I think you have done a great job! Thanks so much for all of your hard work!

Sarah,

I really like your design! I think it looks great! You have nailed the layout for functional purposes. I really like the colors you chose and the feel of your design. The detailing behind the Ask the Decorator and the Welcome is wonderful. I think you used my picture perfectly.

I was wondering if there is any way that you could add something to the bottom of the page. Nothing big. Just something to make the design look like it is finished off. That way when people get to the end of an article, the bottom of the page looks nice and inviting also. I don’t want it to be anything near as grand as the top bar. If you have any questions about this please ask.

I really like the way you have done the top bar. I was wondering if you had any other options of pictures or substitutes for the tassel. I think what you have done looks great already and it really doesn’t need to be changed. I just wanted to see if there are any more choices.

I just wanted to tell you again how much I enjoyed your design. It looks amazing!

Thanks so much!

Best wishes,

Meghan

Ton-Cua Fan,

I really like the creativity of your layout. I think it has a really neat feel. I like the way you incorporated the Ask the Decorator with my picture. I also like the way you have placed the photos.

As much as I like the design, I feel that the curly designs on the end of top bar are a little too much.

Other than that I think you did a great job. The colors your chose are great!

Thanks so much for your help!

Sarah,

Once again Congratulations! Your design is great!

I only have a few changes. So hopefully it won't be too much trouble.

I like the tassel design better than the second one you made. I like the way that the top part brought in more color.

First: I was wondering if there is anyway that you can play with the colors a little bit. Nothing dramatic. I like the colors you have right now and I don't really want them changed. I was just wondering if there was a way for you to bring in a small amount of green. If it would look bad, don't worry about it.

Second: The welcome part is amazing. I definitely want that on the home page. Below the Welcome there is text and then another line. Below that line you have a picture and text. For the home page version, I would only want a picture below the line. Also, is there any way to decrease the space between the lines of text? I think the leading might be a tad bit too big.

Third: For the content part, I would like to keep the fancy details behind the welcome, but I would need to loose the welcome. Below the Fancy details, I would need an article headline. The headline would be a bold, bigger font. Then below the headline we could have one of those lines. Then just as you have done on the page you already designed, there will be a half size picture and text. However, could you put the picture on the left and the text on the right?

My last question is, how will the categories look when a mouse is on top of a certain category and how will the subcategories look? For example when the mouse is on top of rooms a box should appear beside the rooms box and list kitchens, bathrooms, etc. How will that look in your design?

Once again, thank you so much! Your design is amazing and I am so excited to get it up and running! Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks so much!

Hi Meghan,

To make this easier I will do a seperate post for each page :)

HOME PAGE:

I tried adding some green but it did nothing to enhance the design. What I have done is made an Olive Green highlight for the rollover effect on the top navigation. The rollover button for "read more" could be Olive Green also.

The image - Would you like this image for the home page? If so I will get the non-watermarked version.

I have added "products" to the top nav as I realised I missed it in the design brief :)

The design has been coded XHTML, Tableless CSS. It is a liquid design that fills your screen at all resolutions.

You can preview the code to date here:

Sarah,

It looks great! You've nailed it! It really is amazing!

I only have a few quick questions. Is there anyway to have the top things; about us, products, etc. centered? Right now they seem to be off center in the coded version.

For the picture on the homepage, I would love to have it fill the entire space. Also, (if this is too much work just tell me no) but is it possible for the big picture that is there to fade into another picture? Maybe so that three different pictures will be seen?

For the categories, is it possible to have sub categories? I really like the way you have coded the categories, but I will also need subcategories. That way people can go directly to what they want instead of having to go three pages deep before they find what they need.

I can't tell you how thankful I am for your help. The design is amazing! You have done an excellent job! I am so impressed by your work!

Thanks once again!

Meghan

Hi Meghan,

Thank you for the kind comments. Making changes or additional tweaks really isn't a problem :)

1. I have blurred two images together which fill the space at a resolution of 800.

2. I have centered the top navigation so it floats when your screen resizes.

3. I have added the menu for the sub-catagories.

Sarah,

The changes you made look great!

I am only concerned about the categories right now. When you go to view the subcategories they look a little jumbled and they don't stand out. Is there any way that you could change their color and make them seem a little less jumbled? Also they do not directly correspond to the category they come from. Is there anyway that the start of the box can be directly in line with the category so that it looks like it shot directly off of it? Maybe by making the subcategory bars the same width as the other bars might help. And maybe adding an arrow to the subcategories when your mouse is over the category might help. I'm not sure.

Also, when looking at the regular categories, I was wondering if you could make the category font a little bigger so it is more prominent. The font for home, products, etc. seems to be bigger. However, the categories are the most important part. So I would like to have them be jsut as prominent.

And last, could you make the search bar a little more scrunched so that the categories are more apparent when you first come to the page. Nothing big, just a little. I want it to look the same, just with a little less space between things. Although, I like the way that nothing touches.

I'm really sorry to ask for so much! I promise this will be it! You have done such an amazing job! I am so impressed!

Thank you so much!

Meghan

Hi Meghan,

I will have a play around with the sub catagories for you tomorrow.

I can move things around so that the main catagories sit higher up - That is no problem :D

I will code the content page for you also.

Kind Regards,

Sarah

Hi Meghan,

You can take a look at the changes to the subcatagories here:

View Preview (http://www.mydezines.com/projects/decorator)

I have changed the colours, added an arrow on the rollover and increased the height of each subcatagory.

I am unable to make the pop up any wider as it is anchored
to the links in the left navigation, so it therefore needs to be in the same column.

The left column and center column are two different sections and each have their own flow. In the left column, elements can be added, removed, resized, and the rest of the document isn't affected. The center column will be affected if the pop up travels into it.

My suggestion is that you re-order the main catagories - putting "Rooms" higher up the list. This way the pop up menu would be seen easier rather than appearing as far down the page as it does now.

Please let me know if I need to explain anything further :)

I will code the content page once we have finalised the menu.

Thanks Meghan!

Regards,

Sarah

Sarah,

It looks perfect! There are only two small things I would like changed. Right now there is a big space between the search input field white box and the search button and no space between the search button and the dark line. Is there anyway to have the search button equally spaced between the white box and dark line?

Also could the elaborate detail at the bottom of the page extend to the bottom of the page like it does at the top with the welcome?

Other than that it looks amazing! I am so impressed! You have done a wonderful job! Thank you so much for all of your help!

Thanks once again!

Meghan

Sarah,

It looks great! It is wonderful! I only have one thing. Could you take out the line after the article. I was talking about was the swirly fancy line in the last post. Basically, I just wanted the box that frames the text, to extend down to the bottom dark line like the box does at the top. But don't worry about it, if it can't be changed.

I think everything looks great! If you are ready to send the files, I will be to take them! Thank you so much for all of your work! I truly appreciate your help! The design is amazing!

Best regards,

Meghan
