Design Brief: Typhoon Clean Logo
Deadline: September 5, 2005
Prize $400.00
Hi Palmer & Company
Established post construction cleaning company, changing name to Typhoon Clean.
Audience Profile:
We target high-end residential builders and commercial general contractors.
Our audience is mostly men, construction environment.
Perception Guidelines:
• Professional/Corporate
• Retail Brand Driven Look
• Clean Looking
• Redefining Old Standards-New Outlook
• Confident
• Customer Service Focused
Communication Strategy:
• Clever or Smart Icon
• No Clichés (no cleaning tool icons like brooms, mops etc. or any building or house icons)
• Font to show movement, strength, force
• Logo to be used on: uniforms, stationary, vehicles and future website.
• “Typhoon” can be primary, “Clean” can be secondary
Our Core Values:
• Earning Customer Loyalty is first and foremost.
• We encourage Creativity and Innovation within out team.
• Commitments made are commitments kept.
Books & Ideology we hold dear:
• “Lovemarks-The Future Beyond Brands”
• “Creating Customer Evangelists-How Loyal Customers Become a Volunteer Sales Force”
Icon Themes we’ve considered but aren’t locked into:
1. Wave- Suggesting Strength; the ability to get the job done right, the first time, in a timely manner.
2. Life Preserver, Bobbing in the Water-Suggesting; Service, Help & Dependability
Fonts:
We really like the font “Concorde” which suggests strength and movement, but again would consider any other great fonts that fit the profile.
http://fonts.goldenweb.it/pan_file/l/en/font2/Concorde.ttf/d2/True_Type_Fonts/c/c/default.html
One Variation Needed On The Primary Logo:
Variation A- Raised three dimensional letters and icon in color, with the look of a clear coat on top.
Letters to have a thin darker under lay & sides rounding to a very slight dome.
(almost like what a raised car company logo would look like on a car)
Good Luck All!
And have a great time working on this project.

Hi Jon-Glad you could join in. I like a lot of your past logo design work and was happy to see your submit.
• You might want to try using upper case letters for T & C or maybe just the T; looking at the lower case T & Y together it’s a little hard to read.
• I see where you’re using a light gray drop shadow for the wave. I like the subtleness but, would it work better with a third color as an accent color or try tying it in with the black? When we use the wave icon alone like on a hat, another color might help set it up.
Again thanks for your 1st. submission.

First, I'd like to add that the logo we choose will be submitted to Communication Arts, How, Logo Lounge, The Big Book Of Logos and other publications for consideration in their annual design competitions.
#4 Eziey
Hello, thank you for your submit.
• Let’s look at the kerning on the font for “Typhoon”. You might want to condense it a little bit to create a little more visual tension.
• Also the weight of the font for “clean” is a little light. What do you think about using Thekla Bold Extended or something like that, all upper case?
• I also think by not italicizing “clean” it puts more importance on “Typhoon” and the movement that’s going on with it.
• The wave icon needs a little help. We need to focus on making consistent, emotional connections with consumers. We want to walk away and say about the icon, “That’s clever, I like the way they did that”. It also needs to suggest, in a quick glance what we stand for, what we’re all about.
Eziey, look at your B3 logo. It has a lot of visual strength and creates tension the way B and 3 fit together. It looks like they were made to be together. That’s what we are aiming for, fonts and icons that work together and are arranged in a clever manner.
#5 Artemii
Hi, thank you for your submit.
• You might try using an upper case letter for “T”
• Variation A- Raised three dimensional letters; it needs to be more 3D, try using a slight darker under lay, and add sides so it looks more 3D instead of the flat look. The top of the font will be slightly lighter in color because it’s closer to the light source.
• Icon, what can we do to make it stronger and more important?
• Your choice of colors is good, they suggest cool, clean and inviting.
#6 Alex
Hello, thanks for your submit.
• I’m not sure I’m in love with the font. I think by your choice you’re suggesting redefining old standards a new outlook. But it’s not to corporate or it’s a little impersonal and sterile, a bit on the abstract side.
• Icon, it has to suggest feeling and have an emotional connection. If we were to take the icon and put it on a hat or shirt without our name, no one would know what is was or understand what it stood for. It has to be clever. You’ve got to create a compelling visual experience for our audience when they look at this logo.
I look forward to all of your revisions

DESIGNERS: Don’t feel compelled to try a wave or storm concept. If it looks like a home run then OK, but if it’s weak try something else. There are other elements that might work better, like a Life Preserver, bobbing in the water-suggesting; Service, Help & Dependability. Or a part of a mermaid, or even strong geometric shapes that relates to our approach to our business.
#9 Fabian
Welcome, thanks for your submit.
• The icon looks a lot like the logo for maxclean. Sorry, we won’t be able to explore that look any further. Do you have anything else you’ve been thinking about or working on?
I tried looking at your portfolio to suggest some sort of look or direction you’ve done in the past but could not find it.
Any basic water or storm design is hard to develop that hasn’t already been done. What about something else that suggests our Perception Guidelines and Communication Strategy listed in the design brief?
#10 Alex
Hi again
• You’re getting closer, but that color-cool gray 6 won’t show up from a distance on our white trucks or my silver gray pick up truck. Did you see the pics of both in the design brief?
• Icon- sorry we’re just not in love with it. Do you have anything else you’ve been thinking about or working on? You might try staying away from a storm concept, what about something else?
#11 Dbenton25
Hello, thanks for your submit.
• Wow, there is a lot going on in your submittal. Don’t worry about trying to convey “clean” it’s already done for you, its part of our name, it’s a given. You might be over thinking the problem.
• Lets not worry about the Variation A- Raised three dimensional letters logo yet. That will come once the primary logo is close to being final.
I looked at your portfolio and really love a couple of your past logos. 1) Adrenaline and 2) Aged Care.
Both show good problem solving when it came to the design challenge. Both show good use of symbols and creative use of negative space as design elements, especially Aged Care. I like how simple you show movement in the Adrenaline logo. Do you think you could open-up a can of that same stuff you used on those logos for this challenge?
• When your ready to tackle the car logo look this tutorial it’s similar to what I'm looking for, except the sides should be a little more pronounced and the font has more color instead of chrome. But you should get the idea, it’s a much more refined look. http://www.absolutecross.com/tutorials/photoshop/effects/highlighted-chrome/

Hello again
• That’s better, I like # 13 best. As I said to another designer look at this tutorial, it’s similar to what I'm looking for, except the sides should be a little more pronounced and the font has more color instead of chrome. But you should get the idea, it’s a much more refined look. http://www.absolutecross.com/tutorials/photoshop/effects/highlighted-chrome/

Hello, thanks for your submit.
• I’m not crazy about the font or the icon.
I looked at your portfolio and really like your Oasis logo. It’s clever and simple. What can we do that’s clean, clever, and simple and conveys our approach to our business?

Designers:Please read the comments directed at the other designer as well. I may have covered something that could be a potential design problem with your submits. Thanks
#16 Design General-Glad you could join in. I’ve seen a lot of your past logo design work and I’m happy to see your submit. How about a link to your portfolio so I can make some suggestions based on your past work and be able to give you a little more familiar direction for this task?
• A little too wispy and feminine. At a quick glance it looks a little like a dandelion, suggesting-Care Free. Remember we are in the construction trade. And when a Typhoon overtakes a town or city it basically rearranges everything. We do that, except everything is clean and new again when we leave- hence the word “clean”
Several important things to communicate to the viewer with this logo, as outlined in the design brief:
• Our strength, speed and ability to get the job done in a timely manner. (a lot of the post construction cleaning co. are “Mom & Pop” or “Flyby Night” operations with little training and or experience) This can be achieved by a strong font, a font that would suggest action in a subtle way.
• Dependability, service and our ability to help our clients out at the close of their construction projects. This could be achieved by the use of a Life Preserver, Bobbing in the Water. But be cautious; a bobbing life preserver if not executed and handled correctly could suggest COMPLIANCY- like a boys fishing bobber in a pond. Or even worse an empty life preserver can suggest- No Hope…the intended victim is lost, too late to save.
So with that said, lets try to rethink the challenge at hand and come up with a winning solution.

#17 & 18 graphixparanoid
Hi again, thanks for your quick revisions. Over all they are looking better.
• #17, the “P” somewhat over powers the rest of the logo. Instead of bring everything together, it tends to divides the logo into 2 halves by its weight. It also over powers the “T” which should be upper case to add more balance.
• I like the playfulness of #17 but we need to work on the execution of your idea.
• The light gray “clean” won’t work and be seen well at a distance on our white trucks, or on our silver pick-up trucks. Did you see the pictures in the design brief?
• #18 that’s a little better, but we need to inject a little color into the word “Typhoon” and increase the size and weight of the “clean” font.
• We like the clean looking direction you took, but what could we do to add a little life to it?
What can you do to make it look a little more commanding, and emotional?

Dregwar, thanks for the feedback!
I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand you right.

#21 Artemii
Sorry you were not able to understand my feedback. I will try again.
• No the font does not have to be a chrome look or chrome colour. What I was trying to show you is the front needs to have more of dome look with slight (thin) sides so it looks 3D.
• The white outline should now be the sides of the icon and in dark blue because the light source is from above. The top of the dome font has the reflected light from above.
The chrome link was just to give you an idea of a dome look. I hope this will help you, if not please let me know.
Thank you for your time on our project.

You or any other designer might also want to also consider other icon ideas since the wave is difficult to design something that is different or new looking.
• like a life preserver
• Or a palm open-left hand with a wave cut out in the bottom of the palm.
I say left hand because Teva has a right hand logo and I don’t want to run into any copy right problems.
Good Luck

What a pity I can't understand you! :(
You've asked the text to be 3D, I made it so. The light source is above
the text and the icon as you requested.
I have everything needed to accomplish this tusk, I just don't
understand what you're trying to say.
Artemii.
Here's something based on your use of a hand (worker's glove) suggestion...I have a feeling I may have seen a similar concept...I don't know for sure, I will look into it, but the idea came to as soon as you mentioned the hand.

OK you want to try again. Go back to the Chrome demo.
1) Start out by using fonts and layout just like in my example #3. Except now the “Typhoon” letters are in color blue and “Clean” letters are black Typhoon Logo Concepts1.jpg- From the design brief
2)Add blue color to the chrome
http://www.absolutecross.com/tutorials/photoshop/effects/highlighted-chrome/
3) There is no white outline-just like the example in the chrome demo, only a slight side without a real defined line. This gives the logo more of a 3D look than the chrome demo and looks more like an automobile or car logo that is attached to the front of a car. The graphic you design won’t be as dark as the “X” example. The dark is controlled by your light source.
This graphic will be used on the side of the silver truck. Any other questions please ask. Thanks.

Hello, thank you for your submit.
• Sorry, that’s not at all what we are looking for. Your submit is basically vector art which if we wanted we could do in-house. We are looking for a logo that is creative & solves our requirements and communicates to the customer our business strengths and values.
Please re-read the design brief and all of my comments to the other designers so far, you’ll get a good idea of what will, and what won’t work. Thanks

Wow…. Adrian that looks great. That’s the Bee’s knees. We like how the positive and negative have two different meanings. The positive (blue) is a rip curl over a rip curl. And the negative (white) is a hurricane symbol.
• Would like to see a few variations, can you tighten the up the character spacing for “clean”
• Also can we see the icon with our fonts Concorde-“Typhoon” and Thekla Bold Extended-“Clean” and the 3-D effect for “Typhoon” only.
Thank you very much for this version, it looks great.

Do you see how the cut lines in the Concorde font tie back to the sharp lines inside the wave icon?
And how the Concorde font suggests; Force, Speed and Attitude while framed and emphasized by the straight lines of “Clean”?
I think version #5 looks more aggressive & dynamic. What do you think?

# 53 Jason
Thanks for your submit. It looks good, a couple of things you might want to adjust.
• You may want to tighten the space between the water/wave icon and the word “Typhoon” to create more tension.
• And increase the size of “Clean” a bit for more informal balance.
#54, 55, 56,57,58,59,60 Jon Engle/Relevant Studios
Thanks for your revisions,
• #54 we like this one but not with the receding color.
• Also when aliening two different words horizontally, It might be best to change the “clean” font to Thekla Bold Extended.
• The color gray wont work on our white trucks or our silver pick-up trucks.
• #60 we were wondering if the icon you used had any meaning that we are not seeing. It’s important to have some sort of significance or symbolism behind it to help tell a story about the brand.
#61 Raja
Thanks for your revisions,
• I ‘m not sure about the icon you have. If I wasn’t involved in this project I wouldn’t be able to guess what is was. I know it’s a cross section of your wave variation but not every one will get it.
• PMS 2975 blue is to light, try something stronger.
• For the ‘clean” font use Thekla Bold Extended. See how well it works in message #43.
#62 Aaron
Thanks for your submission.
• The two different PMS blues are too similar in value. Try something more contrasting.
• Your “T-Wave” icon is missing something; it appears that the trunk or bottom part of the T might not be long enough. By using the wave cut out design it distorts the icon so your not sure what it is if it were to be used as a stand-alone design element. I like the concept but work on the execution a little more.
• For the ‘clean” font use Thekla Bold Extended. See how well it works in message #43.
I think the graphics are coming along well. I think you’re starting to understand that the logo needs to be strong for the construction industry, but clean and striking. Good Job All.

Hello Adrian
Can we make some revisions to version # 07?
1. We like the changes that you did for version # 07 for the font “Typhoon.”
2. Can you use the old icon from version # 05 and place it as close to the word Typhoon as you did in version #05, we like this icon better.
3. Add just a little space between letters for “Typhoon” like in version # 05
4. Go back and cut out the white lines in the new version # 07, they were filled in during the revisions.
5. Add a small “TM” next to the N in the word “Clean”
6. We would like the file as one complete logo and each of the 3 design elements (icon, Typhoon & Clean) separate.
7. What type of files were you going to send them in? Example, tiff, gif jpg?
8. I’ll need them for PC use and Mac use.
Thanks for all of your help, you’ve been great.
This is what the business cards will look like. They will be printed on clear plastic.

Hello Adrian
• That looks good, you still need to add the “TM”
• And just confirming, we will need all the pieces separated as well as together.
• Also can you have the logo in one file without any background in black as well, no white, nothing?
This is so we can place it on other colored objects or photographs without the white background.
I think all of those formats are fine.
As for design credit for when we submit this work to the trade publications like How magazine, Communication Arts, etc. I have your firm as DesignGeneral (no space), under what city would you like it listed as?
Thanks for your help.

• Will the logos be 300 dpi?

I'll provide jpg at both 72 and 300 DPI. Also, the psd will be at 300 DPI. I'll provide vector files too. That's mean you can use it to save resize the logo without using quality and to save it at what resolution you want.

Thanks for sending the files. I’ve got a couple of questions to see if we can tweak the graphics after we have outputted them.
• When I print the logo using a HP InkJet printer or our commercial HP 8550 LaserJet printer it looses the 3-D detail. I’m printing about 15 cm or 6 inches in length, so it’s not a small output, that it might loose it’s detail. I can see some of the detail on the monitor but most of it is lost in the printout. We are using good paper so I don’t think that’s the problem. Can we make the color variations stronger? I suggested during the contest that building a 3-D look the sides of the font should be darker than the top, thus creating the 3-D look. What can we do to make it standout more?
• Can you send the “Clean” as separate file? I want to increase the size of the word by ½ to 1
cm. That’s what I meant when I asked for all 3 elements to be separate so we could size them up or down to tweak the balance.
• Also after looking at the round icon we think it may need a red center to give it more presence. Is it possible to drop one in and send with the new file?
• Please look at the mock up I sent. I took a circle and condense the height 85% as apposed to 100% width on the scale. Your software might be different so the % you use might be different as well.
Thanks for your help. Drew

Hey that’s great Adrian
Sorry to be a bother, but when started to printing out the graphics on paper we noticed a little fine tuning was in order.
Once again thanks for all of your help. Everyone in the company is excited about the new name and particularly the new logo.
As another job or assignment we will also need graphics for the service trucks and pick-up trucks, so please keep that in mind.
Thanks Drew

Hi Drew,
Here is a variation with a new 3D effect on the icon and the text. Also, I thought about using a negative cross in middle of the icon instead of the red spot.
Let me know what you think about it.
Cheers,
Adrian

Thanks Adrian for the quick turnaround. Sorry I was out of town and unable to respond until now.
After looking at the revisions I think I might have asked you for something that was almost impossible to do because of the strange Concorde font. Thanks for trying anyway.
Lets just keep the red “eye” inside the icon like I made it and that will be fine. I understand what you were trying to do with it to suggest “Help” but let’s just keep it the way I drew it.
Let’s just go back and separate the 3 elements so I can size the word clean up or down. Then we can call it a day. Thanks.

Hi Adrian
Do you think you’ll have time to put the red circle inside the icon? I can do it but I can’t link it or imbed to the graphic, so it moves around when we insert the graphic on any literature.
If so, please look at the mock up I sent. I took a circle and condense the height 85% as apposed to 100% width on the scale. Your software might be different so the % you use might be different as well.
I still need the word “clean” seprate so I can size it up a little.
Thanks Drew

Adrian
Thanks for the return e-mail.
That’s OK if you need more time and have other projects pilling up then take the time to finish those first. I just wanted to know if you could do it so I could plan when I would have the art work to the printers.
No big rush, take care of your other needs first and just let me know.
Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Adrian
After opening the files I found that there aren’t any clear logos (without white backgrounds) in the 300 dpi folder.
I’ve use the ones included in the web folder but their resolution isn’t as sharp for printing brochures. Is it possible for you to send a 300 dpi folder with logos without backgrounds?
Thanks Drew Gardner

Hi drew,
I have provided you with .ai, .eps and .psd at 300DPI. Those have transparent backgrounds. What graphic program are you using?
Only the .gif and .png files permits saving with transparent background and those are web formats. For print you should allways use the files I've mentioned above.
Let me know if I can help you further.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hello Adrian-
I’m using MS Publisher 2003 for PC. When I import jpg graphics from 300 dpi file they have white backgrounds. The eps file is somewhat distorted.
I can't send the PDF where you can see on the cover the white background behind the logo and the eps file. File size is to large 3.61 MB.
Also on the back page (lower right hand corner) the logo I used was from the Web folder that has a clear background. (labeled Logo-Transparent) This graphic shows and prints somewhat distorted especially around the clip path.
How can I send PDF so you can see?
Please advise.
Thanks Drew
