Hi folks

Aside:
It has been a long time. I have 24 pms to answer and several other projects to wrap up here. I will get to them immediately after I get this one done..promise. Miss you all

OK I need to get a faculty website up pretty quickly
What I want :

Words: Dr Renee Levant
Philosophy, Religion & Social Thought
In The Service of A Humane World

Illustration: Here is an illustration that would be perfect. Unfortunately it has been on my computer through various crashes and reorganizing and I don't know whose it is and whether it is usable. This gives you a good idea of the sort of style/theme I want to go with the words somehow..Of course I am not looking for a clone of that picture

Note if you try to get religion in there...think WORLD religions I prefer a bit more abstract like in the picture..aluding to justice, learning communation religion without being too concrete

http://www.oracleweb.net/learn.pdf

Colors: The ones whoever did that graphic used are great....other colors rich and professional but still friendly and accessible

Vector prefered if possible to make sizing easy
Also would like layered psd file if made in photoshop

Hope to see some cool stuff and a good fight

Renee

Nice!

I would like something in there that gives the sense of learning and teaching

Excellent start

Hi Kelly

I like it a lot.... I Like the style and the way it holds together

The dove doesn't work for me.

I would love to see a version of this with richer colors (assuming the effect can be preserved that way)

Not sure but I think the book is too long and thin..looks more like a torah than a book for college

and maybe add one more box picture to it to make it longer more banner like

I absolutely LOVE the sun background for the words. Really nice and ..
Really "reneeish"

Thanks I am excited... (And IN both cases avoiding gushing. I have been advised that gushing reduces entries. So I want to be clear that I am NOT gushing over either picture . . . )

slightly different colors

rlevant
09-02-2005, 04:26 PM
Thanks Kelly

Of those I tend toward the second but with the book like in the first

I don't like the 3 people around the earth---feel too sloppy to me.

What I don't see in your design is the sense of dynamism, movement and commucation between people that I see i the picture I attached as an example of something that would work.

The effect I am after from that picture is the way the two faces seem to be in conversation, the people with the earth seem to be in movement etc

The ring of people is too typical and static for this piece

Also if you post it a little larger it will be easier for me to picture it as a header.

Thanks

Renee

here's another idea

rlevant
09-02-2005, 05:59 PM
Alright!

That really is getting there!
(plus I must love that Africa shows:) You must know me from before hehehe)

A Question...So you imagine this as a header as it is size wise?

I like headers being taller than usual when they are gorgeous...but should it be longer to fit across the top of say --a template of at least 600 res fixed length-- sort of thing?

(PS: Notice everyone I am NOT gushing. More entries very welcome I won't publically gush until the end ;-))

rlevant

PS My roomate suggests you enter the first version with the dove in a contest for a Christian Bookstore ---absolutely perfect !!!!!!!!

Here's my entry. Since this is a website header, the size i made is 800 pixel x 200 pixel. Original file is in vector format (Adobe Illustrator). I would be glad to hear your feedback.

Click HERE (http://rongenrobles.com/client/illus_.jpg) for actual size.

Graphix-

Ok No gushing I remember...

I like the togetherness and movement a great deal

The colors are very attractive.

The words seem to get lost - I wonder if the could be above or below the graphic (It is OK to make it taller than the 200 pixels)

I think I like the symbols....

In both yours and Kelly's the symbolism I would want a bit more of is of people together --community ---

Humanity for me is the people of the world..and teaching is forming a community of l learners

Awesome Job-- I always say I like more entries but then with just a few I go nuts tryng to decide LOL

rlevant
09-03-2005, 06:03 AM
Quick addition--

The symbols of the head with a block going into it and head with a lightbulb might be a place to replace with a sense of a community of learners.

The info comes from one another and the world (well Ok and the teacher --but by pointing them to the world and each other)
Rather than filling in an empty block (I will avoid block head jokes)

rlevant

One more comment

Also the smiley face bugs me..... The background images/swirls are superb..the foreground a little too cartoony or unserious or something like that..the smiley face, blockhead and lightbulb thingy's...

While The figure running toward book and candle is not bothersome to me in the way the blockhead and smiles are..

I like the elegance and classyness of the background: the women and swirls and colors

and I really like the movement of how the foreground figures are placed...but not thrilled with the foreground figures...does that make any sense ?

I REALLY look foward to another version :) oops almost gushing darn it!

Kelly..Imagine your design replacing the top/header portion of this Mambo Template:

The Aug2005 one from MamboSolutions:

http://clubdemo.mambosolutions.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

(pull down menu to August 2005)

Perhaps adding a diverse community either studying or ???with another touch of that blue/purple...

Renee

rlevant
09-03-2005, 08:40 AM
hmmm do you see august? if so scroll down to template chooser

If not try this
http://www.mambosolutions.com/

Click previews tab

select August 2005

(I am not necessarily stuck on this as the template I would use..Just one that seemed a color background that might really work well with the graphic --- I tend to choose templates to fit graphics...I was thinking in terms of what you have done..if you have a different idea don;t feel constrained by my template choice..it is VERY flexible)

Agustin, your sense of color is absolutely exquisite!

I love the figure with the book in the first one

The faces in the second are marvelous..they remind me of Haitian folk art

Yet I don't like it as it is for a faculty website and I am trying to articulate what it is.....

A few things I can put my finger on:

1. It looks like two different designs on a banner --not enough cohesion
2. While I adore the faces they are really just looking at one another not communicating or connecting
3. I like the greater stylization of the guy reading the book and the faces with the book...it feels more professional ...I wonder if there is a way to make the globe and people more stylized

A wild renee idea -- renee does this soemtimes it helps

sometimes it doesn't because while very creative she is NOT a designer

OK.. What if there was a way that made it seem like people around teh globe somehow came our of the conversation about the book between the two faces?

As if the world appears from their reading and conversation...

and/or their conversation and the text arises from the world

rlevant
09-03-2005, 09:28 AM
One thing I forgot..Please take the lettering off your beautiful graphic..LOL

The words get lost and it interferes with the power of the graphic

Kellyportfolio

here's another stab at it.

rlevant
09-03-2005, 10:13 AM
Hi Kelly overall I like #12 better it has an elegance that I feels gets lost in this version

I do like the wording as You have it here and the blue

But the three folks in the middle and light bulb don't work well for me

The composition of the two parts of #12 really works....I would tend to try adding to it a third "part" focused on a diverse community or whatever.... with wording like you have it now

Thanks again

rlevant

Wow....(oops no gushing)

Hmmmm... Would it work to have the globe with the book....and the people around the globe.....the swirls for conversation between the two heads

and for the moment just get ride of the text

rlevant
09-03-2005, 12:55 PM
also I wonder what would be the effect of putting

the people and world in center versus 2 heads in the center ....as described above

1...world /book reader--- conversation -- people around world

2. world/bookreader--people around world-- conversation

No text for now

rlevant
09-03-2005, 01:56 PM
One last idea

There is a way the two Design Elements looks more striking.

What if rather than ONE person reading book and the world

severa (3)l with linked hands were reading...instead of one ?

Then we could have

-- 3 people reading book with world

-----and the two faces with the swirls rather (instead of dotted lines to signify conversation )

And NOT the text on the graphic heh

That works!

It has the striking colors, vitality and the sophistication
and gets the message across. Well done.
And yes I do notice Africa;-))

Heh A bit of a large display. . .* laugh*

Let's not mess with it further ;-)

I want to see what others look like after revisions. If I am still debating between some I may ask you to put the words Above and below the figure...but it doesn't seem important to my decision at this point so ...no reason to have you do more work.

Let's see what the others come up with. And whether Renee will finally have a contest and pick only ONE winner **ugh***

I could not resist getting a sense of it with words.

HERE (http://www.reneelevant.com/design/try.jpg)

I decided to post it here with the warning below:

I have illustrator but I.... heh
I squished augustines graphic and did not align lettering or choose fonts/colors...But this does give a clearer sense of how
he or others might want to consider words off the graphic

The part with my name actually looks good to me --but I am NOT a designer feel free to change it

And Kelly-- I love how the words are in yours so pay no attention to the noisy client

Kellyportfolio

Here's another! :D

rlevant
09-04-2005, 10:37 PM
I can't say anything cause I am not allowed to gush

Pout

oooooooooh wooooooo ooooops -- I guess I gushed

This is gonna be sooo hard to decide ahhhhhhhhhh

rlevant
09-04-2005, 10:59 PM
OK let's see .

Have I mentioned I really love what you have done.

Boy you captured the flow from text to people and back I really love it.

I really liked the blue in other version but here somehow it looks even better ...the lettering on the blue really shows without distracting

I think I like the conveersation twirl you added in the first part..the proportions of each look just right

And the people just really get the idea of justice across somehow...I mean..they are who I would want to see in Louisiana! :D

I might be interested in seeing if the Dr Renee Levant could be darker or bolder or brighter or something like that...but I really like the font

Also in some versions it seemed like the sun rays under the name had a little more punch

But neither of these things are big and I might even decide I am wrong so please don't take a bunch of time unless you think that could improve anything

Here is a questin for ya..what color background would you use with this sort of banner... White mainly?

rlevant
09-04-2005, 11:07 PM
Ok There are already two entries both of which I could easily choose and be thrilled. They are both superb. They are very very different from one another in style. My decision is likely to be more about which style I think will work better for the website then which I like better. I don;t think I could choose on the "like better" basis one over the other.

I want to close this contest pretty soon unless Ron or someone is working on something. If you are please let me know and I will extend longer.

If no one tells me they need additional time I will close this contest at 5 pm central time tomorrow.

Meanwhile I will anguish over which way to go :)

WOW **GUSH** **GUSH***

Not a problem. Let me know what you think of this one. I have brightened the rays of sun and made your name pop out a little more.
In response to your question about background color with a banner like this, I think you could do white, some more faded colors of the colors used in the banner. Anything really. Well, maybe not hot pink.

Thanks

It is beautiful, in some ways it even seems more professionally polished than the other designs

I like the colors..but the symbols and such just don't feel like a good fit

Its funny it feels like I *should* actually like it better. Looking from the outside if I was observing the contest I would think ..that this entry is superior to the others

The objects on the banner are just too playful and cartoonish in an not serious way for my taste for my academic site/sites

And I still hate the block head and such LOL

rlevant
09-05-2005, 12:44 PM
Thinking about what changes might make me choose your design over others

It looks a little too much like a spectaculer design for an elementary school instructor.

The background is great and colors...

What I could imagine would be if the figures in the foreground were more elegant and classy,

The block head replaced with something else (I can come up with ideas if it would help) and catoony head on the right gone

Mixed about the rattle but I think if tehother more cartoony look stuff was not there it would be fine

Oh And Africa and the Middle east showing on the globe rather than generic continent blobs :)

I would be thrilled if you could give it a go. Let me know if you can and if you need me to extend time

Best

I will be adding some money to this contest heh

Agustin- I realize I have gone a bit outside normal contest rules here but it was so clear to me that your image would be perfect for Philosophy Today. I absolutely love it but knew it was not right for my faculty site.

I also thought we really worked well together on that one idea wise...anyway

Would it be acceptible for you to deliver the following for my payment of $165

1. The Philosophy Today Header in vector and as a layered photoshop file and in proper format for the web

2. Can you throw in the very cool graphics of the person hands up looking at the book, and the person hands up with the book and world and people around the world so I can use these on Philosophy today pages

My attraction is to your remarkable skill and color sense but not to the actual design I have been *wanting* to want your design BUT
