Greetings, designers! We are excited and looking forward to working with you at DO in creating our new logo design.

Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Busy Bee’s Cleaning Service

What type of product or service do you offer?
Residential house cleaning

How long have you been in business?
Just starting

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
A logo that stands out & catches the eye of the typical “desperate housewife”, the single guy who works 50+ hours per week, and even those who are retired and/or physically challenged.

What are your long term goals?
Our long-term goals are to possibly expand from residential to residential and office/commercial cleaning. Thus, our logo will want to appeal to both residential and business prospects.

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience.
Men and women 21-99. The majority of our prospects are between the ages of 30 and 55, both men and women.

Who would you like to add to your audience?
Eventually, we would possibly like to attract both commercial/office cleaning and post construction cleaning clients.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
We’re thinking about a logo with a mascot, although not sure how this mascot should look. Then again, if a designer has a better idea, we might drop the mascot idea altogether! Although the name can portray a “cutesy” image, we need it to look professional enough to attract the proper clientele. See competitor URLs below.

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Black and yellow/yelloworange. We would also want a logo that would look equally well in only black and white.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
We don’t want to give too much information so as to stunt the wonderful creativity of the designers, but okay, here goes: The worker bee is (obviously) busy! Envision a hive (which represents the “home/office, etc”), and/or a bee with a feather duster/vacuum/mop, etc., flying around cleaning off the letters in our business name. (Then we could post in the “elements” forum and have it turned into a flash animation for our web site! Our logo would “appear out of the dust” or become “shiny” as the bee flies by “busily” dusting/cleaning). The honey comb represents the “sweet” in the phrase we in North America have come to know as “home sweet home.” With that…let your creative juices flow!

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Hard-working, efficient, thorough cleaning company (we ain’t skeered of toilets!), although happy, not tough (happy in that we are helping others maintain a clean, healthy environment).

What is your tagline or slogan?
None at this time. We’re toying with “We make your home bee-utiful,” “…bee-cause clean is sweet!” Or “…bee-cause you have better things to do!” However, there are those on our team who think this is too tacky.

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
We clean houses for people with better things to do…people like you!

Where will your new logo be used?
We would like to be able to use it on business cards and invoices as well as embroidery for polo shirts and work aprons. We also have a web site, www.busybeescleaningservice.com and would like to have it there, also. We were thinking about car magnets/detailing but are undecided at this time. Of course, we would also like to be able to use it in our advertising campaigns (i.e., fliers, door hangers, etc.).

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
The “M” maid service franchises (several that start with the letter “M”). Their logos are nice. There is one where the “d” in “maids” is a vacuum cleaner; clever. We believe DO can help us come up with a design that is as clever or even moreso than that! Your archives attest to that!

List competitive URLs if possible
http://www.busybeecleaningcompany.com
http://www.bee-clean.com (I love watching the intro to this site!)
http://www.maidpro.com
http://www.maids.com

What sets you apart from your competitors?
Quality of service. Also, hospitality to our customers. In addition to a sparkling clean, healthy living environment, our clients will receive a quarterly newsletter with cleaning/organizing tips and ideas, a birthday card on their birthday, and first-time customers also receive a surprise gift when they return home!

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Busy – full of activity, on the go, hard-working, diligent, industrious, productive.
Bee – Worker bees produce a finished product that is sweet.

Here's my initial concept, something to get things started . . .

The first version (1a) has gradients in the eyes and wings.

The second version (1b) has no gradients (solid colours only) and includes a slogan.

Looking forward to your comments.

Wow! Thank you for such quick submissions! We're honored by your willingness to participate in this contest. Now for the feedback:

Kassi: Great start! You are definitely on the right track. I had also thought about using the bee as an appostrophe (or is it the appostrophe as a bee?) and was hoping someone would pick up on it without me saying so. The honeycombs are nice also. Not sure about the lower case b's, though, and I really was imagining my letters being "clean" or "shiny" not dusty (because the bee had already cleaned them up). We like the letters in 1a and the bee in 1b. Not sure about the bee's head, though. It may need a little more personality without being able to tell gender. I would want the bee to look decidedly happy, and with your bee it is hard to tell. Also, could we see a bee with a yellow head? I look forward to your revisions. You're doing great. Keep up the good work!

Pracus (love that profile, brittney spaniel?): Thanks, also for your quick submission. You are onto something. I hadn't thought about using the bee as a letter! I like the shiny letters but am not sure about the font. I also like the white gloves on the bee (my first business name choice was White Glove Cleaning Service, but it was taken). Not sure I like the bee at this point. The wings would need some refining as well as the feather duster, but that could be done in the revisions forum. Although the bee is well done, I'm thinking he is just a bit too pointy for my tastes. At this point I would like to maybe see a few different font types and styles (possibly more 3d-ish or shadows?). Thanks!

Thanks for the great feedback!

Here are the requested revisions, with a few variations. I'm glad you noticed the bee representing the apostrophe, as I didn't even think to mention it.

The bee's head is now yellow, which was a great suggestion I think. I gave it a simple smile that is easy to see against the yellow.

I tried to give the text a shiny look in 1D & 1E without getting too complicated, capitalized the letter "B" and tried some different treatments with the text to illuminate the shiny feel as well as the glowing honey or hive in 1F.

Feel free to mix and match or request changes of any kind.

Thanks again!

Well, it looks like we've hit the ground running, so let's keep up the momentum! We have one week until deadline, and I am hoping to get additional creative submissions and ideas. Please let us know if you are planning on posting your designs soon. The sooner we can get you feedback, the better. I would also love to see how the logo would look on a business card. Who knows, if it's impressive enough, I may have to up the prize for a business card design as well! Thanks!

Feedback:
Kassi: Thanks for your revisions. I would like to see "cleaning service" in a larger and/or different font, possibly the same font as "Busy Bee's." I want to emphasize the fact that we are a cleaning service and feel that with it so small, if I were to have it on my business card, car or van, etc., it would be too small to tell if it were "Busy Bee's After School Karate," "Busy Bee's Courier Service," etc. I would also like to see the "bee" with curved antennas as apposed to "bent straight sideways." Right now I am leaning toward version 1F. With version 1C, the honeycombs look like bolts, not combs. Again, thanks for your hard work!

Hello!

Revisions ...

The bee now has rounded antennas, also notice the difference in the letter "Y" with each version.

I decided not to use the same orange/black treatment used on the "Busy Bee's" text with the "Cleaning Service" text because, since it is slightly smaller than "Busy Bee's" text, I didn't want to lose the readability when shrunk down to business card size, and the difference in colour/treatment makes each section of the logo stand out nicely (I hope that made sense, it was a lot of rambling! ). I also made the "Cleaning Service" text bolder.

To follow are also a couple of business card samples as requested.

:)

Feedback:

Pracus - Thanks for the revisions. I think I like this font better than the first one. Not sure about the appostrophe, though. Let's leave it this way for now. If we choose your design, changes can be made in the revisions forum.

Kassi - Thanks for the revisions. Could you add ",LLC" to version 1H? This might balance it out a bit more. I'm still not sure if I like the "cleaning service" size or font, but if we choose your design, changes can be made in the revisions forum. Thanks, much for the business card designs. This is a great visual help.

Just wondering if there will be any other submissions/competitors on this logo design. I was hoping to get a minimum of 4 contestants. There remains 4 days until deadline. Although I am impressed with what has been submitted so far, I'm not fully convinced on either one. Remember, the sooner you submit, the sooner I can give feedback!

Kassi - I am having a hard time with the bee's head at this point. Could you try redesigning it a bit to give it a different look? Maybe the eyes are too big, (which is the way it should be, but I think I want it to look more human and less insect, if you know what I mean).

Kassi,
I did play with the bee's eyes a bit. I think I like what I came up with. However, it was done in "paint" and could use a professional touch. Please see attached. Instead of the little beady eyes, I want them to "smile." Thanks!

That's a great help, thanks for posting it. That does look good, just a suttle addition of some white in the eye. I will post the changes for you probably in a couple of hours as I'm just heading out the door.

Thanks again!

Here are a couple of variations with the "smile" in the eye, facing different directions, and added LLC to version J. I also tried changing the "CLEANING SERVICE" text to solid black instead of dark grey.

Thanks,

Kassi :)

Paula - Thanks for your submission! I like the bubbles, but not sure I like the bee in front of/encapsulated into it. Could you move the bubbles around a bit? I like the "star" twinkle, but would like to see one of the letters twinkling. Not sure about the bee. I like the line drawing (simple) but it may bee a bit too "cute." Also, I need "cleaning service" to be a much larger font. I want people to see what kind of company we are, and it needs to be larger. Thanks again!

Paula - I just got to looking at your submission again and began to think that the "twinkle" may just be a "popped bubble!" Sorry if I missed that. I thought it was a "twinkle."

Paula - Thanks for the quick revisions. I am leaning more towards version two at this point. Here's what I like about it; first, I never considered an alternative color pattern other than traditional black and yellow and find it is actually nice! Blue represents "water" which goes great with cleaning and bubbles. Could you put a "twinkle" between the last "e" and "s" in bee's (for an approstophe), please? Also, could you enlargen the font for "cleaning service" to be one-half the size of the letter "B"? Thanks again for your help!

Feedback -

Paula - Thanks for the alternate bee design! No changes needed at this time.

Aaron - Thank you for your submission. I had thought about a bee silhouette but couldn't envision it. I'm not sure I like it after all. I do like the font, however, but not sure about the colors. For some reason, the way the bee is positioned with its wings and the feather duster, it reminds me of a fairy, which isn't really the look we're going for. But thanks for trying. The vacuum is not doing anything for me at this point. If you would like to submit a different bee with the same fonts and different colors, that would be appreciated!

Thanks to all contestants for making our decision difficult. Each entry showed careful thought, originality and artistic excellence to our logo design, and for that we are grateful.

With that, we would like to award the winning entry to Paula's Version 2. We would like a couple of simple revisions, so if the moderator would pay Paula and move our project to the revisions forum, we would appreciate it.

IMPORTANT: We would like to invite all designers to join our next contest in the Miscellaneous Forum, where we will have print material (stationary package B) developed. This will be posted shortly.

Again, thank you all for your work on our logo project.

Hi Paula,
Please make changes to version 2 as follows: Could we see the bee with the smile from version 1 instead of the full-mouthed smile? Also, could you put a "twinkle" between the last "e" and "s" in bees, without separating the e from the s so much? Finally, could you move the twinkle over the "y" up a bit (just to give it a bit more variety).
Thanks!

Hi Paula,

Could you please make the first "B" solid? There is what looks to be a "shine" on it, but we think it looks more like a flaw. Just a solid "B" will do. We think that should wrap it up.

Could you create the files in a format that will work for business cards and also stationary and envelopes? I heard that to create stationary the file has to be in CD format or something like that. This will be our next project on DO.

Thanks!

One last thing. Could you sign the copyright agreement and fax it to me? I would need to plug my fax machine in when you are ready, so you will have to call my home phone number first to give me time to ready it. I will be gone in the morning ( 7:30 am - 3:30 pm ) to clean houses, of course, but will be home after 3:30. I am also home tonight. Here's my phone number (734) 676-2531.
