I need a logo for a new project labor business called HuskyLabor. The business is based out of the University of Washington, utilising the skilled and semi-skilled labor of university students to complete projects for clients in the Seattle metro area. The UW mascot is the Husky, thus the name. Husky of course also has the meaning of "burly" or "robust". The projects we take on will vary greatly. For example, two major focuses will be on manual labor (such as landscaping) and technical consulting (such as computer services).
The final logo will compliment our core values of: Intelligence, Reliability, Strength, and Endurance
We are a local Seattle business, leveraging community support for the university. Thus a pacific northwest feel emphasizing our 'localness' might be a direction to think in for the logo.
The Husky logo of the University itself is fantastic. Simple and effective. I wouldnt mind if the final logo were stylistically close to theirs, but it must be distinct enough to avoid looking like a 'copycat'.
Husky Logo:

One thought I had would be to have a stylized team of husky sleddogs. My concern is that it might overcomplicate the logo or be diffictult to distinguish the dogs as huskies, but maybe you brilliant designers could find a way to make it work.
A cool typeface for the name "HuskyLabor" and font to use for collateral materials will be icing on the cake.
Thank you, and good luck!
Here's an idea. Let me know your opinion.
Thanks.

I think the husky is a little too 'cute'. looks kind of like a pup. i'd rather him be more serious/mature. think 'professional' husky. i'd also like the typeface to be more substantial. perhaps even in caps? HUSKYLABOR
thanks!

Here is something I came up with. I'm actually hoping to attend U of W for my BS in Nursing, at the Bothel campus after I finish where I'm at now. Anyway, hope this is on it's way to what you are looking for. I look forward to your feedback.
Thanks,

I'd rather the logo and the type be seperate. Not a fan of the purple/gold color scheme. The first design by ruairi was a bit closer to the mark. Maybe go more in that direction?
Thanks for jumping in there Cindy.

Hi Pracus.
I like the boldness of the type in 'LABOR'. I think that works well.
I feel like the husky part of they type feels a little fuzzy, or weak. It doesn't say "Strength" and "Endurance", which are the feelings i'm hoping to convey.
The husky dog I think would need a little more personality. One thing I like a lot about the first design by ruairi is that the dog has a lot of personality. It seems playful and inquisitive. It is very likable. What i'd like to see is that same level of personality, but showing a little more intelligence and strength.
Notice the Husky logo I linked to... that dog looks like it's ready to take on any challenge!
I do like your style, so I'd love to see you take those ideas and recreate the concept.
Thanks!

Hello All,
Great creativity so far.. I appreciate the effort.
I've looked at whats been submitted so far and came up with a couple thoughts...
1. The logo should remain simple and recognisable (ruari has this right)
3. how about "Trucker Chic" ? Our employees are college students, and must get into the brand for it to succeed. It's fashionable to be Agricultural/Industrial these days... so how about moving in the direction of the John Deere logo? I like idea of having the logo in a crest. Maybe replace the deer with a husky? The typeface works for me too. Not sure about color scheme.

Well, thats my two cents for today. I'm not saying it has to end up being like John Deere, but I think its a cool idea and could be very effective.

Gig,
The running dog in the grass is a little busy I think. Thanks though!
Pracus,
Moving in the right direction. I don't like the U connected to the logo though. The face of the husky, especially the front, would need to be modified. The expression on its face is a little off. What I do like is that the sharpness of the head looks like mountains. quite cool.
Ruairi,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the font you chose for "Husky" on version 03. It rocks. I don't like the husky face as much. That 'blue eye' thing, while relaistic, is a little scary! I think he just looks too much like a wolf. Version 02 still looks like a pup... but less happy. I actually still like the face on your version 01 the best so far (great personality)... but it needs to look a little more like an adult dog.
Christian,
awesome. this is getting much closer to what i'm looking for. I'm not into the typefaces, but the logo concept is good.mountains are a great idea. the dog looks a little too feminine/motherly i think. maybe you could make it a little more masculine? maybe play with giving the mountains a little texture?

NHR,
Your version 1.1 and 1.2 is really close to what i was talking about for the john deere idea. ITS EXCELLENT. I'm not sure which one i like better, but they are both definitely going down the right road. The face of the dog needs some work (his eyes and nose especially), but overall a great concept. please keep workin on this! i like the size and spacing of the type, and the logo is good.. but not as good as Ruairi's version 03 font. that one is perfect. best so far!
Thanks for feedback, ventureguy.
I'll definitive work on that :)

Paula,
I'm afraid that the dog looks a little too feminine for me. more like a collie. i'm going for more masculine and serious. Thanks for the go at it though.
Ruairi,
To tell you the truth the first husky face is still the best you've done. Can you try putting that in a crest like NHR has done? See my comments the john deere logo. Thanks!
Christian,
That's a good looking dog. My only comments would be to make him look a little less 'fluffy', see if you can find a font closer to the ones NHR and Ruairi are using, and perhaps even try putting it in a 'crest' . Thanks!
...
Getting closer all around! Remember to keep it simple and iconic. Notice how basic and stylized the deer is in the John Deere logo? That would be a good direction to move in. Thanks to everyone!

Gig,
Well the concept of putting it in a crest is good, but i still dont like that running dog illustration. i don't really want a cartoon of a dog so much as a stylized, symbolic husky. you second concept is more in that direction, but it still doesnt look like a husky to me. what i'd love to see is something that is very minimalist and almost more of a symbol of a husky than an illustration.

NHR,
I still love the dimensions of your concept. I think I prefer the 1.11/2.2. This rectangular form, and the placement of the text feels like a proper logo to me. The dog face still needs to be reimagined. I like that its fairly simple, but it still doesn't work for me. I'm not an artist, so I'm not quite sure what it is. I'd encourage you to keep it simple and symbolic. Less detail rather than more. I don't like the change in the eyes (those wolf eyes just creep me out). Also i think the ears would look better if they were a little sharper. You might even consider making major changes to the way you are approaching the face.
I'm giving you so much critique because your concept is excellent and if the husky face was perfected it would make a fantastic logo for huskylabor. Please keep working on this! Thanks!

Jennifer,
I really like your husky. I think he is artistically at the top of what i've seen. Good personality and expression. The eyes, nose, and snout especially are excellent. Try working that into a crest like NHR and Christian are working on, simplify him just a little bit, and maybe flip him around so face right. Thanks!

Christian,
I like your crest! Looks very much like a proper logo. The dog still needs a haircut though. Huskys should look slim and svelte. The eyes and mouth need a little something too... The smile is kind of crooked. Getting close!

Hello All,
Thanks for everyone's creativity on this project. It's coming up to the deadline, so I'll have to make a choice soon. I'd say that christian's latest concept is closest to what i'm looking for.
Christian, there are a few minor changes i'd like to make to the logo.. and we'll need to decide on a color scheme and typeface, but i think your idea works well. If I select you as designer can we get that done by the end of the week?
Christian

Hi Christian,
Ok, i'll make a 'laundry list' for you to start working on:
- The left eye on the husky bothers me a little. I dont like that notch, so lets smooth that out.
- I'd like the husky to look a little bit happier, so lets give him a slightly bigger smile.
- I want "Husky" and "Labor" the same size and in the same font
- The white border (diamond shape) that circles the crest. I would like it a little bit bolder, so increase the thickness of that just a little. I'm not 100% sure this will look better, but i'd like to see how it looks.

Hey Christian,
Sorry I havent been posting... been busy with the holidays.
The border looks better now, i like that. The font still needs to be worked on. Perhaps you could find a font a little more like the one Ruairi used on his version 3. I really like the 'K' in husky. it has a subtle cyrillic look to it which i think looks awesome (and fits because huskies are russian dogs).
I'm thinking for color scheme I might like to go with a dark emerald green. maybe green and black. we'll probably have to try a few revisions to come up with the right color. thanks! and Merry Christmas.

Hey Ian, Merry Christmas to you too! Here's it is in emerald and black and with a different font, which all provides for an slightly edgier look :)

why don't we try just making the white line/border green. it would be very subtle, but might work.
i don't like the font. it's much too light and frilly. needs to be bold. the thing i like about the other font i mentioned (that ruairi used) was the way the "K" was put together. it would be great if you could find something like that. if not though, we can find something that will work.
another couple minor things... when you changed the left eye on the husky... it got rid of the notch, which is good.. but the eye looks a little like... an alien? its a little too smooth and elongated i think. could you tweak it to look a little more like a dog :-)
and also, now that our border is bolder the top right ear of the dog is getting very close to the top. let's give him just a tiny bit more room in there.
getting close!!! thanks!!!!!

Heyo, here's the next one! :)
ventureguy
12-28-2005, 02:19 PM
hmm, not quite what i was hoping for. let's change the dog back to the way he was.
why don't we go back to the font you had in version 5 for 'husky'. is there a light version of it we can use for 'labor'?
let's go with a darker green (almost black) around the outer border, white for the thin line, and the same darker green for the inside, and no gradients.
Christian
12-28-2005, 02:41 PM
Here are the next ones. Changed the eye back but still made it a little less alienish.
ventureguy
12-28-2005, 05:12 PM
i like your #8.
let's go just one shade lighter on the green.
can you move the dog just one tick to the right (it feels weighted to the left a little).
let's go back to the font/size you had for 'labor' in your #5, in black.
that might just do it.
