Hey logo designers. We need a new logo for our hardware company. Existing logos can be seen here:
Web site logo (http://www.etherstuff.com/images/etherstuff_stack.gif)
Our old hardware design (http://www.etherstuff.com/images/ethermometer.jpg)

Design Outpost Creative Brief Worksheet
Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Etherstuff
Connecting Devices

What type of product or service do you offer?
We design, manufacture and sell standalone ethernet devices. Each device has its own web server and web page layout. The devices are not normal networking gear, but specialized modules that do things like monitor temperatures, send alarms, bridge to serial ports, flip remote switches (relays), and so on.

How long have you been in business?
3 years.

What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
We have a logo, but it's too simple. We need something more professional looking. It is very important that the new logo translates well to a b&w vector image because we'll be silk-screening it onto our hardware devices. But we'll also be using the color logo on our web page and literature, so color is important (to some of us) as well.

Finally, we will be making software logos to match part of the main logo down the road, so a pattern that encompasses the whole or is recognizable as a piece of the main logo will be important.

What are your long term goals?
To get rich selling ethernet devices. Or at least to break even. We have plans for a dozen different ethernet enabled devices.

When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
Feb 28th.

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
Engineers, mostly. Technical folks who work in very clean computer labs.

Who would you like to add to your audience?
We'd like to appeal to mass market audiences as well, but most of our sales will be to professional engineers for the foreseeable future.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
Something clean and simple. I'd like to keep the ethernet cable theme from our original logo, but I'm not married to it.

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Not really. Our web site color scheme is pretty bland right now. It will likely get an overhaul someday. It'd be nice if the logo fit the existing site from day 1, but a nice color combination may change my mind.

Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
The ethernet cable or an ethernet connector (RJ-45).

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Hi-tech, professional, quality equipment. The idea that our devices are standalone and full of features would be nice, but that seems like overkill for a logo.

What is your tagline or slogan?
"Connecting Ethernet Devices"
(But that may change.)

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
We'd like people to think we're a solid company with solid products. We want to be seen as a professional group instead of a garage startup.

Where will your new logo be used?
On our web page, silkscreened on our hardware (white ink on blue or purple background), on our software.

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?

Lantronix (http://www.lantronix.com/) - Not bad. A bit busy for my tastes.
BlackBox (http://www.blackbox.com/) - Nice and simple.
Digi (http://www.digi.com/) - Not bad, I guess. Too simple?

What sets you apart from your competitors?
We're cheaper and smaller, and we cram more autonomous functionality onto the devices.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Powerful automated devices

Trying to connect letter E and the ethernet cable:

Here's my attempt at it, something that matches your color scheme and would look great silkscreened (in my humble opinion of course ;) )

Thanks for submitting some designs. These feel a bit cookie cutter so far. I'm hoping for something with the logo/icon integrated in the company name. The cable from the 'r' in our original logo is nice, but I was hoping to have it come from the first 'e'. I wasn't able to make that look nice, though. Someone can make it work, though.

Pieter: Nice logo; it almost has an 'e' in it. Otherwise, maybe too abstract.

Dragan: I like the idea of the E in the icon looking like an ethernet jack. Can you make it part of the "Etherstuff" text? Also, I don't like the colors much. Can we lean towards something else?

Michael: Nice and clean, but not much better than what I have already. Can you bring the icon 'e' into the text?

Here is the revision regarding colors and attachment of the icon in the text:

Here's my submission in two color alternatives, one with a stronger feel, and the other softer.

Dragan: Thanks. But now the E in the logo looks too small. Can it be embiggened?

Medigraph: Visually appealing. I'm not sure the E works well there as part of the connector, but I like the concept a lot. The weaker colors are much too weak on white, btw. I like the red. I'm afraid I'll have trouble pulling this into my software icon. It's not impossible, but tricky.

Enlarged, so now it looks like a capitol E:

Maybe this may work better :)

I like the logos so far, but I'm not excited by them. My boss even likes the original logo better.

Can anyone come up with a way to make the cable come from the bottom of the E instead of the 'r' like our original logo? I took a few shots at this before, but it always looked dorky.

Thanks everyone for your submissions. It was a hard choice.

We've chosen to go with Medigraph, version 2 design.

Thanks. Sorry this is late; we had a funeral to attend last week.

Can you extend the Ethernet connector a bit so it's not touching the 'f'?

Sorry to hear about your loss :(. Here's the revision you requested.

This is good. I'd like to see it in some colors (Gold? Blue? Green? Red?) but I feel I have held you up long enough. So I'll be happy to approve this rendition.

Thanks for your work, and I apologize for the several delays.
