Design Outpost Creative Brief Worksheet
Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Red Canoe Properties
What type of product or service do you offer?
We buy homes, renovate them if necessary and then sell them outright or on a rent to own basis.
How long have you been in business?
Since 2003
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
Create a recognizable logo that will catch attention, and when someone sees it again, they will remember that they've seen it before.
What are your long term goals?
To be the leading real estate housing entrepreneur in my county.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
February 24, 2006
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
Distressed homeowners, other investors, house renters and rent-to-owners, and building contractors.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
Anyone interested in selling or buying a home.
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
Good looking, snazzy, eyecatching....like me.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
As long as there is a red canoe in there somewhere, I'm flexible (and color blind).
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
See above. Include a red canoe, and something that ties it in with housing.
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Accessible, approachable, friendly, concerned, professional.
What is your tagline or slogan?
I don't have one.
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
I buy houses, not canoes.
Where will your new logo be used?
Letterhead, postcards, website, signs, flyers, business cards, vehicle magnets, classified ads.
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
Edgewater Home Solutions (which was how I was referred to this site) developed a good looking logo here. All others in my area look amateur-ish.
List competitive URLs if possible
What sets you apart from your competitors?
I'm very easygoing, honest, friendly.
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
I buy houses.

Wow!
Here's my comments so far on the first three entries:
Vertlime: Sharp, looks really good. Can you change the black/white version so that there is a grayscale tone difference between "RED" and "CANOE?"
Kekepania: I really like that there is a house incorporated into this design. When I first look at it, I see a cute smiley face (the first floor windows are the eyes, the door is the nose, and the canoe the smile). The font is a little plain.
Bill: This is similar to Vertlime's, but with a softer impact. I like the font, and the way that you can tell the difference in the words in the black/white version. Good looking canoe. Can you make the word "Properties" a little more prominent?
Thanks SO much,
RedCanoe

Hello again. Here is my revision. I tried to skew the smiley face to make it a little less noticeable ;) I spiced up the type as well. I also included a purely black & white version. Let me know if you have any more suggestions, they are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Vertlime: Can you show the shadowing off the canoe in all of the designs?
Kekepania: It still seems too busy. Is there a way to streamline it? Maybe with outlines rather than details?
THANKS FOLKS!!

joshuamings: Can you fill in the canoe with shading, without the waves along the bottom, or just make the waves much smaller and random? Maybe leaving the doorway hollow, but with the rest of the canoe filled in. I didn't see a canoe at first, but rather two sets of knees and legs facing each other. Good font, nice blend of house and canoe (no easy task!).
Thanks,

Here's what I'm thinking....
I like the font on Vertlime's the best. Something seems missing from this design, however.
Bill's is really good and has my favorite canoe, but it makes me think of a canoe guide company or outfitter. Can you provide a different font for "RedCanoe" that makes a stronger impact?
Paula23 has really good ideas. I like the look of version 1 better than 2, but I like that 2 has a house theme added to it. I think you're on to something - can you modify version 2 so the house is "stronger"? Maybe modify the font, and stretch "Properties" so it's as long as the line above it.
Medigraph's is creative, maybe use a more traditional door knocker.
I like version 1 of joshuamings, without the back shading, but with a solid canoe and no waves.
Just some thoughts....THANKS!!!!!!

Paula23 is headed in the right direction. Looks really good, well balanced. Maybe try a different color or two from PMS 2935. "Properties" needs to be stretched just a smidge to line up with the end of "Canoe".

More feedback....
Paula23: Your post #28 is my favorite so far. Canoe + house + good looking, crisp, balanced design.
Vertlime: I like the shadow under the canoe, and the border ring in your bottom left design on post #26. Maybe delete the moon, and get a house in the background that goes with the "feel" of your design.
Cazeyzman: I like your post #31. Maybe use a red border instead, not so much open space above the house, and change the semicircle at the bottom to match up with the curves of the canoe.
THANKS AGAIN!!!

vertlime: Good job with adding the house, but need a more generic house.
eziey: I like idea with the white lines around the edges of the house and canoe.
I'm still liking post #28 the best so far. One more day for submissions.

We have selected Paula23's design. Can you provide a business card example? Also, can you make "Red" a different shade than "Canoe" on the black and white design?

Thanks Paula - the business card samples look really sharp. Can we finalize the colors per below?
black and white - make the word "Red" a shade of gray, and make "Canoe" solid black as before, rather than a hollow outline. See post #35, bottom left b/w design for an example.
color - please provide your red and blue version as in post #28. Also, provide a red and grayscale/black version.
This will give us a b/w, a 1-color, and a 2-color version.
Can we see the logo with "Red" and "Canoe" pushed together, and make "Properties" fit the width?
THANKS!

Hi Paula!
We really like the designs with the words pushed together. The only change would be the solid red design. Could you do that red and black instead of all red?....That way we will have three option for printing purposes (red/blue, red/black and black). Thanks for all your help. I think this will be the last request. It really looks top-notch!

Paula,
A question that's come to mind?....How much additional charge would there be for you to do the business card design and the letterhead design for our company?....Just wondering how that would work, if it's possible.
Thanks!

Hi,
Here is the color change for the Red & Black design :)
As far as doing a B.Card and a L.Head for you, I'll send a quote when I send you the files for this logo. We can work on that privately once this project is complete :)

Paula,
Your latest revision, Post #47, seems to have a different shade of blue in the top logo. Could you change the blue color back to the same shade you used in Posts #43 and #44? After that, I think we'll be done!
Thanks,

Hi,
Thats strange,I just changed the colors of the red, black

Paula,
Yep, that shade of blue is great. Only one more change...I promise. Can you make the shading on the outside of the canoe in the b/w version the same shade of gray as the word "Red"?

I don't think I was clear. Sorry. Make the exterior of the canoe gray (to match the word "Red"), rather than the crescent around the top of the b/w logo.
