Hi all,
We’re building a Requirements Management System within Microsoft Word that we (creatively) call “RMS”. This is an internal application for our company that will help manage requirements that flow from our business folks to our development folks and testers and then out to our Production website. The requirements, authored in Word, will be stored as XML in a database. (Our unofficial tag line is ‘the flexibility of Word with the power of a database’.)
We’re looking for a logo for RMS that we can put on this Word-based tool in the Task Pane. (See attached file for approximate image placement.) We’d also like to use this same logo as an icon for the desktop shortcut icon that will launch RMS. We may even use the RMS logo for internal newsletters and other sorts of branding.
The logo should use the acronym “RMS” and should convey a sense of being streamlined or efficient. We also would like RMS to have a feel of being collaborative and innovative. We are a fun company so it shouldn’t be too corporate, and it should fit comfortably within the Word application. I’ve given a little context on the application and how it will be used, so if you had any ideas on incorporating a graphic/icon with the letters “RMS”, that’d be great too.
So I guess the final output would be in a *.png or *.gif file, and a *.jpg too (for flexibility). Once we settle on a logo, if you could create an *.ico file for the desktop shortcut icon, that’d be great too.
Thank you very much.

Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
RMS (and possibly any graphic or icon that you think would help convey the streamlined/efficiency feelings mentioned above)
What type of product or service do you offer?
Requirements Management. Business people enter requirements for new company projects in Microsoft Word. Developers and others review the requirements and build according to the specifications. The end result is a new feature on our company website.
How long have you been in business?
N/A
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
This is just an internal tool for our company. But this tool should be a more fun, albeit structured, way of entering project requirements and making sure they get developed as envisioned.
What are your long term goals?
Acceptance of this application within the company by the people who are being asked to use it.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
Wednesday, March 8th
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
The main users of RMS will be ‘product managers’ who work with the business to generate requirements for our developers.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
Developers and QA engineers will also use RMS.
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
A cool, hip logo that conveys efficiency and being streamlined. Something that creates a sense that this tool will aid in collaboration and requirement reuse.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Blue is fine, as it fits within the default color scheme for Microsoft Word 2003. But it could be more exciting than that. I hear orange is a power color. Whatever.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
Nothing definite.
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Fast and efficient.
What is your tagline or slogan?
The flexibility of Word with the power of a database. It’s just our unofficial tagline and doesn’t have to be included with the logo. (There probably isn’t the room in the Task Pane of MS Word.)
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
This is a great tool to use to author and manage your requirements. It’s efficient and will help all involved as the requirements flow through the lifecycle of the project.
Where will your new logo be used?
Initially in the task pane of Microsoft Word. (see attached.) We’ll also use this in newsletters, emails, maybe even t-shirts.
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
This is internal, so we have no competitors.
List competitive URLs if possible
What sets you apart from your competitors?
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Efficient
