Hello everyone. We are in the process of starting up a brick and mortar retail establishment, dedicated to designer fragrances (perfumes/colognes). The name of the store will be
The Perfume Room
This logo will be used, among other things, for business cards, as well as signage including but not limited to signage on the outside, in the front of the store, above our doors. This is the first time we have opened up a retail store so we aren't quite sure what those signs are called (any help????).
We want to put forth a professional, elegance that goes hand in hand with high end (Gucci, Burberry, Christian Dior) designer fragrances. A Boutique type atmosphere. At the same token, while that is true, we sell these fragrances at HUGELY discounted prices, which means we would like some of that "discount" feel sprinkled into the logo.
We look forward to hearing from each and every one of you.

Pracus, I like alot of the work I've seen from you in other contests but I'm not quite crazy about this concept. It's a bit generic and doesn't quite have the brandability that I was looking for. Also don't quite know if it would translate well to illuminated signage.
I would love to see some other ideas from you.

Bart, I'm not too crazy about this idea. Can't quite put my finger on it but, I'm looking for something slightly more abstract (at least I think I am) with regards to the graphic itself. Would love to see other ideas from you.

I would also go with room over hut. While you are a discounter, by selling a luxury product you want to make sure your name does not discourage the thought of elegance. Also room rhymes with perfume and gives a more pleasant sound to the title overall. By incorporating a tagline (as shown in this example) you can maintain the discount brand while still appealing to a consumer's elegant nature.
Of course, that's just my opinion :)
PerfumeHut
03-05-2006, 02:58 PM
I would probably agree with everything you said, and, while we had gone through about 50 possibilities before settling on "Hut", it turns out that "Room" wasn't one of those, and, when it hit me, I kinda knew right away that I liked it best.
Now onto your submission. I like the elegant feel of part of it, but, I don't care for the colors too much, and, I would still like some sort of graphic (not necesarily anything fancy), incorporated (unless something blows me away otherwise). Again, I hope to see other ideas from you.

To be honest - if I would opened this kind of store I would like to name it Perfume Parlour - even the sound of this name has something exclusive in it :) I think it's also more catchy than room or hut.

Wow. Thanks for all the submissions. Here we go.
Fabian: While at first glance I liked this submission, there's something about the look of the graphic that kind of tells me "clip art" although I know it's not. And, I don't like the font too much either. Again, at first glance we (my wife and I) both liked it, but, after studying it a bit more, we would love to see some different ideas from you.
Medigraph: A bit too obscure to me. No matter how long I look and try, I just don't see a perfume bottle in there (although I know I'm probably just missing it). Again, though, I would love to see other ideas.
Taldo: This one just isn't the direction we want to go. Not sure what the design is, and I don't like the fonts or colors too much either. Would love to see you give it another shot.
Pracus: Your second submission is kinda neat. Not too sure about the small "o" in the word "room" that kinda look like eyes, but, we kinda like the elegant look of this logo. Simple, but elegant. We would love to see some brand new ideas from you, as well as some revisions to this idea.
Bart: While I absolutely LOVE your work in other contest, I'm not quite sure that this one works for us. The color scheme we don't like too much, and, the logo itself doesn't really catch our attention too much. I know you have it in you (cause I've looked in other threads, and you won one of my contests in the past).
Ruairi: Not really the look we are going for. We are trying to portray class and elegance. I don't think the color scheme, or the "firecracker" type graphic really puts that forth the way we would like. I would love to have you try again.
I am hoping that those of you that are not going in the direction we would like, will try again with some new ideas, cause I think that each one of you has it in you. I'm nothing short of utterly amazed at some of the things that I have seen in other contests from each of you.

It depends on the type of sign you have made. the one that are just the cut out letters, lighted or not, are called Channel Signs, at least around here. I don't know if there's an industry term for the regular ones.

Pracus, font variations on the idea with the squiggly "symbol" and the simpler one with the little squiggly line above the word "Perfume".
Aaron, do you have any classy, elegant cursive, or slightly less traditional fonts that I can see?
Vert, definately better. The other colors may have been too tough to see. Can you show me a couple of variations of the perfume bottle? Maybe show me one with the attomizer spray?
Shnicker, we are looking for something a bit less complex, and something more elegant/classy looking. Something that will be brandable, but toned down and classy. I would love to see some other ideas from you.
Ruairi, I'm still not crazy about this direction. The font is alright (although I'm not crazy about it) but the graphic itself really doesn't do anything for me. I also don't think that the brighter purple color really puts forth what we are looking for.

Hi,
I purposely tried to stay away from the cursive, italics, etc., because the perfume bottle that replaced the "o"s played off the upright, predictable, clean typefaces. It's a bit more difficult to see what the icon is in a more script-like font.
What do you think?

No problem...I'll see if I can come up with a typeface that doesn't fight with the icon, but my gut says that it would be better to stay with the less decorative fonts. ;)

Aaron, we continue to REALLY like this idea alot.
Bart, we still aren't in love with this idea. We are trying to stear clear of anything with a background like this (and like nhr's submission) again, because it would be near impossible to put into a sign of channel letters. I know you have greatness in you.
Senter

I didnt know this is going to be channel letters with gem lite. I thought you were going to be doing a acryllic backlight sign.
PerfumeHut
03-06-2006, 06:21 PM
Oh, ok, that explains it then...Yeah, in fact, I had asked above and someone explained that they were called channel letters. It's the kind of sign that you would find (most of the time) above a store front, in big letters. Someone said they are called channel letters and they can be either illuminated or reverse channel (which means, I guess, they are illuminated from the back).

Channel Letter Sign
http://www.signsmanufacturing.com/images/IMG00003b.jpg
Acryllic Backlight Sign
http://www.blockbuster.com/Media/images/franchise_store.jpg
The top Blockbuster sign is a example of this. Basically the sign company gets a white or clear color acryllic then inlays the color vinyl on the backside of the acryllic and it is lighted from behind. With this type of sign anything is possible logo or sign wise and is considerably cheaper. The national average of a channel letter sign is about $24 per vertical inch on each letter.
Just some quick FYI for you to consider in helping describe to us what you are wanting.
Senter
03-06-2006, 06:29 PM
Reverse channel letters are a shape with the letters cut out of it and then the shape is backlight. The backlight on all of these can be either neon or florescent.
PerfumeHut
03-06-2006, 06:31 PM
It's considerably cheaper than that here in Miami today. Someone today quoted me, what equates to about $13 per vertical inch on some channel signs.
And, I believe that the requirement from the landlord will be a channel sign. I also think that, while the other type can work, the channel sign is the better option (probably why it's more expensive also).

To all designers. If at all possible, when you post your logo concept, I would love to see the way it would look as a sign above a storefront. Either as a sign from channel letters, or an acrylic backlit sign. That would really help me out with being able to visualize it.
Senter
03-06-2006, 07:22 PM
You need to remember that since this is going to be backlite acrylic that the colors need to be somewhat bight in all hours of the day. This vivid rich colors are the way to go as they can be seen well during noontime and at night. With that in mind.

This is by NO MEANS a requirement, nor is it even a request, but, if you are looking for inspiration on any sort of perfume bottle type graphic. I've taken the liberty of pointing out some fairly popular ones, in case you want to use a stylized version of these.

Very nice, and an excellent idea. What I had in mind before though, and I'd still kinda like to see how it looks is maybe to place the bottle BETWEEN two of the words, and have it blow the perfume INTO the top part of the word, and have the word slant slightly. Do you know what I mean?
Or another option would be to use the bottle as the first "o" in room and have it spray INTO the "R" a bit.

Pracus, can you try what you did in message 52, but change the font on the word "room" so that it's a different font (albeit not wildly different) than the word "Perfume"? Also would like to see the word "The" put in there.
And maybe that little squiggly line turned 90 degrees as part of the "f" and make it continue floating up and to the right of the f in the same way it is now?

I do still think though that the black color of the bottle and the word "Room" is difficult to pull off with the Channel letters, because at night it would be pretty close to invisible.

Wow. Now you are talking. Some excellent submissions here.
Relevant (#114 and 115)-I kinda like the simplicity of the logo, but, do you think it's brandable? Just looking for your thoughts on that. I do like the simplicity and the font.
DJaka-Don't care too much for the style of the "f" which looks like it forms an "s" before the word "Room." Also, the squiggly lines are probably a bitt too long. I would love to see another idea from you.
Pracus-Hmmmm. Maybe it was better without the squiggly line across the "f." But, let's try this. Let's make that squiggly line that goes across the "f" a bit more uniform. Make it start at the base of the "r" (but slightly to the right of the "r") and end at the top of the "u" but slightly to the left of the "u." Does that make any sense? That way it's still squiggly, but slightly more uniform. I also think that maybe the font for Room overshadows the font for "Perfume" and "Perfume" is really the main word in there, for obvious reasons.
Gig-We really like this idea alot. Can you try a couple of different fonts for us? Also, the perfume bottles will need to either be totally empty on the inside, or totally full probably for purposes of the sign.
Sawan-Idea #1-We really like this alot as well. However, as above, we think that maybe the word "room" overshadows and outdoes the word "Perfume." Can you modify this a bit?
Idea #2-I like this font alot.
Idea #3-We like this one as well. In general we really like your style/ideas alot.
Fabian-This is interesting in that we hadn't thought about putting those lines there, but it might work. We do think that while we do want the attention on "Perfume" the other words should be big enough to read, and that might not be the case here. Also don't know if the perfume bottles (I know they are the ones that I mentioned somewhere else in this contest) are really brandable enough for us. Your thoughts? Would love to see an additional idea or two from you as well.
Some EXCELLENT ideas though. I would love to see more.

The font is too thin to work really on a sign and the graphic kind of overshadows the words too much, I think. I would love to see a modified version of this with those revisions, or some new ideas from you.

Gig: Thanks for all the revisions. We really like your ideas alot. No more revisions at this time are requested. Thank you again. If we pick this as the winner, we may have some more revisions.
Pracus: Same as Gig. We really appreciate your hard work and all your revisions. I think this is my favorite of your concepts. Ultra Simple, yet very elegant.
Paula: We like this but, can we see this concept without the little squiggly sprays, or possibly a reworked spray instead of the squiggly lines? Would also love some color and font options.
Shnicker: This really isn't the direction we envision, to be honest. The graphic itself doesn't really say anything to me. It doesn't really look like a perfume bottle and has ALOT going on around it. I have seen some good work from you in other contests so if you wanna give it another shot, with a totally different concept, that would be great.
Fabian: Neat, but not quite what we are going for.
Taldo: Again, very nice, but this isn't really what we are envisioning. Again, I would love to see another idea or two from you.
Bart: Yet another very nice submission. Although I think we like your previous idea more.
Skyvee: Very simple, very elegant. We like it. Would love to see some color variations.
Sawan: Thank you also for all the hard work and revisions. We like this idea, and if and when it's chosen as the winner, we will request some more revisions possibly.
Castell: Castell, see my above comment. We REALLY liked some of your ideas in the Nushru thread. We like this one as well in the elegant simplicity. One thing that worries me is the ability to see that "Perfume" font from far away, on a sign of the type we are going to employ. Any thoughts?
Ratbaggy: Simple and elegant, but, this might be a bit TOO simple almost in that the font is a pretty widely used one, and there isn't a graphic or distinguishing mark on there at all (which would be fine, as in some of the submissions above, if the font weren't so common), which makes it a tough concept to really go out and work at branding. Any thoughts? Do you hve any other ideas?
Your second option is neat, but, do you think it is toocomplex with regards to the graphics? Are those custom? Or is it clip art? Just curious.
Eziey: Very nice. Simple, elegant, and brandable. Out of curiosity, what does the two colored bottle kind of signify (other than the obvious...a perfume bottle). Just curious what you were thinking.

I would like to reiterate something everyone.
Some (albeit not all of you) seem pretty set (creatively) on utilizing some sort of perfume bottle graphic. Now, while this is certainly an option, it's not the ONLY option and I'm VERY open to going with a logo that doesn't have any sort of perfume bottle in the graphic.
Just wanted to state that in case there was any confusion.

Hello,
I believe that an ambigram would not be appropriate for this project for two main reasons. Firstly an ambigram is in most instances hardly perceived at first glance and secondly the project name doesn't click an ambigram solution. I dare not say that an ambigram cannot be executed, but if it is it will look really inappropriate.
Besides that I see the deadline is set fot the 18th of March, so I believe there is still time for the entries. I planned on posting a couple of others, but unfortunately they won't be ambigrams.
Sorry for the confusion if any.
Sincerely,

PerfumeHut
03-13-2006, 05:16 AM
What I mean by forced is that it kind of looks like you REALLY wanted to make the P and the R go together somehow, and you kind of forced it in that way. It doesn't look natural and flowing. I really do like the submission alot, but, I would like to see a couple of variations on that P and R joined.
Tyler-I think we would like to go in a different direction than that. The font and colors aren't really doing it for us, nor is the little graphic in the front. Do you have any other ideas?
Bart-We like this font alot as well. Elegant, but informal and contemporary. Thanks for the submission (you are the hardest working guy on here).
Coffeehouse-This is a bit too complicated for us, to be honest. We aren't quite sure what the stars signify. We are looking for something simpler and with a slightly more upscale, elegant look. I would love to see other ideas from you.

Shnick, I appreciate your effort, but, for whatever reason, the High End and elegant nature of our business, which we are trying to portray in our logo, just isn't being put forth here. I'm not sure what it is...If it's the font, or the colors, or the graphic, but, this almost seems too whimsical or cartoony, for what we are trying to put forth, which is a simple elegance.

Coffeehouse-The font interests us (it's simple and elegant), as well as what you did with the "o" however, the graphic isn't quite there. Maybe you can remove it? Also how about trying to connect the "m" since you seem to have aligned them like we mentioned up top.

I don't know if shading will work here, because of the fact that I don't know if channel signs will allow for that. Also, I think that the upside down "r" makes it VERY difficult, if not impossible, to read. I think maybe a capitalized "r" would work better, and, if not, then we would probalby have to take out the "r" altogether from the upside down concept.
I would also like to see some different fonts, as this one is too generic for our liking.

Ratbaggy-We like number 153 alot but, can you try something different with combining the P and the R? This is a thought. Maybe put the curve of the P, coming out to the left, and the curve and line of the R coming out to the right? Just a thought.
Bart-Can you modify number 110 a couple of ways? First off, can you make the bottle spray to the OTHER side so that it doesn't crash into the letters? Also, while I like this idea, the bottle itself looks a bit too much like an exterminator's. I would also like a couple of more femining color and font options.
Castell-Number 138-We like the elegance and simplicity but, there are, I think, three different fonts in use here, which we feel are too many. Do you have one font that you could use that is as fancy as the fancy one that you used, but might be a bit easier to read?
Paula-176-We like this idea but, there are a couple of things. First off, the shading MIGHT be tough to pull off with channel letters although a sign like this might require a different type of sign anyway. The gold, though, is a bit OVER stated and bold. Can you try some other, softer, more feminine, more understated colors?
castell
03-16-2006, 05:49 PM
Hello,
Actually, there are only two fonts that were used in post 138. Your confusion might stem from the fact that I have used a thinner version of the same font as to better mingle with the rest. In fact, that way it is easier to focus on the type elements without getting distracted by the insignificant, which is "the".
The font choice is premeditated, so that the font basis axis-es matches in tone and thus can be combined into a text/logo without interfering with each other.
Here are both versions. I strongly support the original one.

Do you have any other fancy (even if it's a cursive one) font which might be a bit more readable?

Very interesting. Graphix. This is interesting indeed. But, again, readability might be a factor. Any way to make it look more like an "e"?

Very nice. One more thought and then I will stop (I promise). I had the idea of kind of what it would look like if you were looking from above? Not DIRECTLY above, but, like from above and off to the side.
Like if you were looking at the bottom x, from the top x, like:
___x
x
Just a thought

YOU WILL STOP :P hehehe. No Problems. I'm not really following the "from the top, from the side thing" do you mean like ... this ....

Cool, thanks. Do you have any other different ideas in that creative head?

No, not really. I mean kind of like what you posted in 232 but, as if you were looking down on it, kind of like a bird's eye view. What it would look like if you were looking down on it, but, not DIRECTLY OVERHEAD. Does that make ANY sense?

like this?

Sort of like that, but not really. Don't worry about it. It's not a big deal. If it's chosen the winner, we can always work on it later. I TRUUUUULY appreciate your hard work, and the hard of the rest of you as well.

LOL. I know there are some people who have said they would post, who haven't posted yet. I can't believe the number of wonderful designs that have been posted so far, but, in all fairness, I did say that the deadline is on Saturday and I want to hold to that in case someone is working on something else.

Gig-Any chance we can see an idea for the Perfume Room like the one you posted in my other contest (this should be alright, considering they are both MY contests) in message number 14?

Skyvee, that's a very interesting interpretation of what we had thought about previously. It's neat. Is there any way to make the "Room" more readable? Maybe also some color options?
