New Prescription Drug Review Site - $575 Prize!!! Due June, 12.
Admin code added by Abby - 7AR250911H962812S

Hi everyone,

As a satisified client, I've enjoyed seeing the friendly design competitions here in the past so I've returned for another! :)

Attached below are our assessment responses -- please read them carefully.

Company Details:
Name: Pill Pharmaceuticals

Company Tag Line or Slogan?

Do you have a Company Logo?
Not yet.

Do you have a corporate visual identity?
No. Pills?

What is the nature of your business?
To provide consumer information and reviews on O.T.C. and prescription pills.

Who is your target market? Who are you hoping to reach with your site?
Male and female ages 18+.

IMPORTANT: Please list at least 3 URLs (web addresses) of high quality sites that you like the look of. Please consider layout, colors, navigation, graphics, and typography.
  • - For a site with that much content, it's organized somewhat well. In particular, the tabs are what I like.
  • - Love the font, simplicity and cleanliness of the overall presentation. In particular, I like how the site isn't so overly dependent on graphics (and more geared towards the use of CSS), but has more of an overall design appeal -- ie. the quarter circles on the left of the titlebars isn't an image.
  • - Very clean and presentable. Particularly enjoy how the middle column sections are broken down (lines, headers, Bold Text. I'd like to see most of the "Latest ..." be similiar to those that in format)
  • (overloaded with text/content, but its presentation... not so well)

What colors or color schemes would you like?
No preference. Possibly contrasting colors that are easy for the visitor to navigate and read.

List the navigation links for your site:
Main (Global): These links should show up no matter where you are on the site.

- Forum
- Buy Pills Online
- Find Pill Reviews
- Share Your Experience
- Certified Online Pharmacies
- About Us
- Contact
- Help
- Add to Favorites
- Make Us Your Homepage
- Tell-a-Friend
- Newsletter
- Login + Signup Area

Main (Pill Menu): A menu title and some sub-links. Show a few to see what it'd look like. ie.

Weight Loss
- Adipex
- Xenical
- Hoodia
Birth Control
- Alesse
- Brevicon
- Levora

* Links and Positions are tenative. I will provide the links in the Category and Pill Profile pages later, but I'm more interested in concepts right now.

Main (content): These are not links. These are what I'd like to see on the main page.

- Welcome Message
- Latest News
- Latest Pill Reviews
- Latest Forum Posts
- Latest Pill Information (last 5 articles)
- Pill Review Message
- Registration Benefits! (a place to show some text)
- Latest Headlines
- News Archive (Broken down by Year then months)

What type of look are you trying to achieve?
In this instance, we want a clean-cut, intuitive and easy to navigate website. In particular, designs that looks great taken as a whole (like an artwork) as opposed to achieving the same effect with heavy use of graphics are what we're looking for.

I like the way most of the sites mentioned above are presented. Please check them out and see if you can get a feel of it.

Please provide the addresses of the competitors' sites, if possible:
Project Considerations:
Do you have any images for use in the design of your site?
None aside from possible some sort of pill or (+)? symbols.

Deadline and Deliverables:
What is the deadline for the design of your project?
June 12, 2006. Earlier if the opportunity presents itself.

What is required breakdown of the files you require our designers to supply you with on finalization of your project?
Sliced + original PSD files of all pages as well as accompanying CSS (Main, category, pill profile and a generic page). XHTML/CSS templates would be nice, but not required.

Are there any other comments/specific ideas we should keep in mind while designing your project?
The #1 thing to keep in mind is this going to be a content-heavy site with a lot of text and long worded menu links. So organization and a flexibility structure are crucial. Load time (hence the emphasis on overall design versus graphically intense) and ease of navigation are also key.

I look forward to your entries. Thanks & good luck everyone!

- Bill

Here's something to start off the competition:

espionage 05-26-2006 05:35 PM

Michael: Thanks for kicking it off! The design is a good start, but I'm looking for a format similiar to that at or I'm getting the feel that the site is trying to sell something as opposed to a content information site (which is more like it). The menu nav. could also use some header/sub-headers to divide up the menu sections (eg. style).

Colorwise, it's not bad, but looks a bit bland. It doesn't have to follow a white/blue scheme only. Black/white/navy blue/orange/gray/etc. So far, no color scheme has stood out just yet. Since it's an information site, readability is an important part. That means good organization. Solid & dotted lines as seperators, white/black text, Big Bold letters, tabs, are all good possibilities to structure the content.

Latest Forum Posts, Latest Articles, Latest Pill Reviews should be in the main content area as opposed to the side. Finally, this should be a 3-column site that should take up around 85-90% of the screen.

I'm happy to see this off to a good start and look forward to all of your entries!

Hey Aliska and Cosmic, thanks for joining the contest! Before I get into individual feedback, I'd like everyone to know that I've updated the URLs list of the styles I like and a brief reason why. Please take a look at it again and base your designs on some of the comments.

The following is a snippet taken from the list to save everyone the hassle of scrolling back. :)

  • - Good left menu navigation. In particular, I like the details such as the little icons that divide up the menu (The style is similiar to ABC of Snowboarding). Menu style that's inspired from that is a good direction.
  • - For a site with that much content, it's organized somewhat well. In particular, the tabs are what I like.
  • - Love the font, simplicity and cleanliness of the overall presentation. In particular, I like how the site isn't so overly dependent on graphics (and more geared towards the use of CSS - ie. the quarter circles on the left of the titlebars isn't an image), but has more of an overall design appeal.
  • - Very clean and presentable. Particularly enjoy how the middle column sections are broken down (divider lines, headers, Bold Text. I'd like to see most of the "Latest ..." be similiar to those that in format. follows a similiar style)
  • (overloaded with text/content, but its presentation... not so well)

@Everyone- If you are entering, please take into account everything in #7. Currently, there's no one design that has really hit the spot; so it's still open season. Good luck!

Pros (#6):
- Like the global login area and search
- Like the fact that Welcome, Latest Reviews, Latest Information are in the mid. column
- Like the way the News Archive is delivered

- The mid. column dividers are very light; it doesn't seem to have the effect of clearly & concisely seperating the sections
- The whole page (left column to right) seems to look like one page. There doesn't appear to be enough distinction between the menu, middle content and right column
- No mini icons to divide up the menu; need more distinctive dividers (1 1/4 circle bar, different colors, etc.)
- Not too fond of the green color scheme, can you try something else?

The Forum Posts should be in the mid column. I was thinking of widening up the middle column for certain things like the Welcome and Registration Benefits as two columns in the middle; latest reviews, information, message as normal.

- Like the dotted seperators
- Like the bold titles (but would like to see a container of some sort. 1/4 circle rectangular tabs, etc.)
- Like the 3-column format

- Don't need the about us, contact, help, add to favorites, make us your homepage, and tell-a-friend as left menu navigations. I'd like to see new places for add to favorites, tell-a-friend, share your experience and make us your homepage as well as a new style for them that makes them stand apart.
- I'd like to extend the middle column to fit the welcome and registration side-by-side
- A new way to display the category menu. Maybe a directory style in the mid column?

Aliska- I'm not quite feeling this concept. Do you think you'd be able to try something along a different direction?

espionage 06-07-2006 04:37 PM

I'm looking to end this as soon as possible; would love to see more entries. Please let me know if anyone needs additional info.

I appreciate your entry, but unfortunately I don't think it's quite what I'm looking for. Thanks for the try!

Great entry! A few things I'd like to see differently.

- Can we expand the width of the middle column a little wider?
- Great colors. However, lets make the 'Welcome to' and 'Registration benefits' as titlebars (ie. latest pill reviews, latest pill information) with the same colors, but have the text separate. For "Welcome to", keep the stock photo.
- For the reviews in "latest reviews" - have it in the style of "Review Centre Recommended" at 3 reviews is fine.
- Have a footer; move About Us to there
- Have a Sign-Up button and "forgot password?" link in the header
- Currently the left menu is pretty good, but I'd like to see the links above the category be considered part of a "group," -- maybe call it "Main Menu" and the categories be under "Pills Menu"

Espionage, this means you are closing the competition for new entries ?

espionage 06-12-2006 02:48 PM

Not yet. Last minute entries are still welcomed if someone is in the middle of working on a concept.

A few technical considerations about my concept:
  • 100% crawlable by search engines.
  • The weight should not surpass 30kb.
  • Full CSS/xHTML W3C compliant.

Hi Lalit,

I like your entry, but would like to know some technical aspects. In particular, how much weight do you expect your design to take up? Please let me know if you have an estimate. Any other additional technical information that you think might be relevant are also welcomed. Thanks!

- Bill
Hello Bill,

Sorry we're not allowed to communicate via PM before a designer is chosen.

To answer your question, I would estimate the design to be around 60-70kb. Most of the graphics (with exception of the logo & 4 buttons under login) will be used as backgrounds. Average weight for each bg graphic is about 1-2kb.

Design will be coded in html and css, with heavy utilization of css.

Hope the information I have provided is helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions.

espionage 06-17-2006 03:45 PM

Thanks to those for pointing that out - I wasn't aware of this procedure when I mass PM'd the finalists. I appreciate the technical information provided and it has made the decision difficult since most of them are on par with each other. I will use this weekend to consider the specs. and design together and have a winner by Monday. Have a good one.

espionage 06-19-2006 01:13 PM

Well it's that time of the contest! All of the designs were fantastic so it took a little longer to evaluate everything. So, without further adieu...

The winner for this contest is Aliska. Congratulations! Let me know when we can start w/ revisions.

A big thank you to all who participated -- I'll be back soon. Looking forward to seeing everyone then!

Anne 06-19-2006 01:25 PM

Congrats Aliska, great design :)
