Due Dec 10th - Recreation of film reel image needed - $100

(Admin code added by Palmer - 0NY133078U689843Y)

Hi,

Several years ago, I hired a designer. He did a fantastic job, but he either did not send me the PSDs, or else I've misplaced them since. In one of the page comps he threw together, there was a table cell with a faded background image (see attached; big_relaunch.gif). It's just a watermark of sorts, so it's not a complete, full-colored version of the reel image. I was wondering if it would be at all possible to reconstruct it using this, and a couple other (smaller and/or partial) examples of the same reel image?

The second attachment is a screenshot of the logo in the header, and the third is a rather small (but full) version of the icon. I really don't even know if this is plausible, but I figured best just to offer up the prize and dive in to find out.

Prize is $100. I'm not sure of the deadline, given that this is such an unusual project, but let's say the end of the month, with a possible extension given that the holidays are coming up.

Also, if it is recreated, I'm wondering if it's possible to do so largely enough that I could use the image on CafePress.com, or some other such custom t-shirt site? They've just begun offering custom shirts on black backgrounds, and I've really love to have this reel on there.

About the end of the month, though I might extend it slightly if the holidays trip anyone up.

I'm not familiar with CDR format, actually. Could you explain a little?

As for PSDs; I don't actually have Photoshop, just Paint Shop Pro 8, but it'd be nice to have PSDs in addition to large GIFS/JPEGs so any future designers would have something easy to work with.

That'd be great, yes. If it all possible, a little more subdued (like the second attachment; you'll notice it has a very photorealistic look to it). But I'll try not to be too picky.

I should add, in case I was ambiguous before, that I'm looking for someone to not just "refurbish" the reel, as Aliska has, but also to "recreate" it -- that is, to finish with an image of the full reel using what they have. I imagine this wouldn't be too difficult when you've already got the first half, but doing it seamlessly is a bit beyond my skills.

I recreate the whole reel in Illustrator, (see the part of reel in wireframe),
so you could open it in photoshop in any resolution needed.

If you want to put that in CafePress.com you could use the file to make jpg or psd file from the file that I've made.

thanks

Hm. I don't have Illustrator; would I need to, to open it?

It's not bad. I really like the lighting effects and shading. I'm not as high on the reel itself, though; I like the original look, with the subtler lines of film. I'm definitely looking for something as close to the original as possible. Anyone is welcome to try to improve on it, of course, but I like the original enough that any deviation from it isn't likely to look as nice, at least in my opinion.

I hope that all made sense.

Oh, one more thing: ultimately, I won't want "The Big Relaunch" -- that just happened to be in the example image. Also, I don't know if this changes anything for anyone, but I'll probably end up using it on a black background. Ideally the reel would be on a transparent BG, but if it matters, black would be best.

Sorry if I've been vague about any of this until now.

You don't have to use Illustrator to open it.
Because it can be opened from other application such as adobe Acrobat Reader or photoshop.
The "The Big Relaunch" can be easily removed.
even the background can be changed as you like it.

Okay, great!

Yeah, the film itself is the only change I'd prefer, if you decided you wanted to make any revisions. Definitely looking for the closest thing to a photorealistic duplicate of the original as possible. Up to you, of course, if you want to revise your entry.

Thanks for answering my questions, as well.

That's definitely better. I think the brown film with the subtler lines works even better, but that looks nice, also.

I have edited the outlines so it would be more subtle.
I hope you like this

Hm, I think you might have misunderstood me. Unless I'm mistaken, you've made the metal frame lighter. I liked the frame just fine; it was the film (the circles/lines inside the metal frame) I was referring to.

Better, though perhaps another color? The original brown of the second image I posted would probably look best. When I say subtle, I'm generally referring to how visible the lines are. A real roll of film is obviously brown and noticable, but the lines between layers is sparse, like the logo.gif file I posted earlier.

It's looking nice, though, I have to say. If you both end up finishing, I'll have a tough choice to make!

That's a bit closer to what I was going for, yes. I like B a bit more than A.

Anyone else planning to take a shot at this, too?

Heya, what's the largest size you'd be needing this image in either pixels or inches. Since I'm probably gonna go for that photo realistic look and will do it in a nonvector format like psd.

I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. The images above are about 1000x450, and ideally the finished image would be bigger...let's say somewhere near twice that, just to be on the safe side? If that's more difficult, it's not an absolute essential, but if it's not a big hassle, it'd certainly be better. I can also re-size smaller, of course, but I can't blow it up, so bigger is better.

As for the format; please keep in mind that I don't have Photoshop. I don't recall whether or not I can open PSDs in Paint Shop Pro 8, but if not I'd need versions in other formats (PNG, perhaps? I think that'd be ideal).

I look forward to your entry. Photorealistic is good, though ultimately whichever looks the most like the original will probably win.

Assuming no one objects, given that a couple people are apparently working on entries, and there's just one completed entry so far, and with the holidays and all, I'd like to extend the deadline to December 10th. I thought I might have to, and probably should've just set this as the original deadline, so please forgive the change.

I can provide you the resolution as big as you need and in any kind of file you want.

Just name the size and the kind of file.

thanks

Hi,

Here are reel examples, plus the examples used as a watermark. The wheel itself is a vector file (created using Illustrator).

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your entry. It's not bad, though if at all possible I'd rather not stray from the original colors too much. I am, of course, open to other ideas, but I like the original so much that it's hard to imagine preferring any other colors or shading. I do still like the silvery look, though.

Just wanna "bump" this back up, in case anyone forgot about it. The deadline is 6 days away. Looking forward to comparing some of the upcoming entries to the two we've got in so far.

That's great, Aliska. All I'd need is the words removed ("The Big Relaunch!" and all that were, unfortunately, just on the only decent example image I could find) and then have it larger (as large as you can make it, really). Great job with the shading, duplicate, photorealism, et cetera. Almost looks like it was designed by the original designer.
