[Designer Chosen] Due Sept 21st : $225 : Logo for Software Product Range [CC106]

Admin code added by Abby - 6YT90062XV840533W , 2WG83259N1374014K

Introduction
We require a logo for our product called “Gaia”. It is a suite of software “controls” that can be used by .NET web developers. See www.ajaxwidgets.com for more information about the product range. The logo does not need to match this site, as it will soon be re-skinned. The successful designer may be offered to quote on that project too if they are interested.

Project Summary
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
Gaia (and optionallya tag line)
What type of product or service do you offer?
An AJAX User Interface Control Suite for ASP.NET Software Developers
How long have you been in business?
7 Years
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
- To give a smart and professional public face to our product range.
- For potential customers and partners to take us seriously.
What are your long term goals?
To have the most popular Open Source AJAX control suite. To have the best selling commercial .NET AJAX control suite.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
21th September 2007

Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
- Microsoft .NET Software Developers.
- Mono .NET Developers.
- User Experience Designers.
- IT Managers.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
We’re looking for something that is quickly recognizable, even when shown in format, and which works well in print and web.
We produce commercial software, and Open Source software, and want to appeal to buyers of both.

We think that the Gaia logo should possibly be related to the concepts of
- getting a lot done in little time
- Environmentally friendly
- the world (earth)
- Gaia (see Wikipedia)
- not too “stiff” and rigid

Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
Nope.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
The word “Gaia” has strong connections with the symbol of the planet earth, so this could be an inspiration.

Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
- Easy to use
- Well constructed
- Fun to work with
- Allows for quick development
- That we help customers product write *maintainable* software.

What is your tagline or slogan?
(we have a few)
- Create. Deploy. Enjoy!
- Code Less, Create More!
(others)
- ASP.NET + Gaia = Fun
- AJAX + Coding Fun = Gaia
- The fun comes free
- CreateAjaxAppsInNoTime()
- What learning curve?
- Less risk. Less code. More done. More fun
- This product contains 0% risk

What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
Our customers won’t struggle when they use our Gaia. They can focus on creating new features in their software, rather than jumping through hoops trying to make the technology work.

Where will your new logo be used?
Everywhere where we present the product publicly. Web site, PDF product sheets, newsletters, advertising banners etc.

Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
http://www.asp.net/ajax/ - Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX. Image is a bit dull and lacks imagination.
http://extjs.com/ - ext. We like their logo. Simple, elegant, a touch nerdy.
http://www.telerik.com/ - not too keen.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
- Technically our product is “better”. It’s faster to work with, and requires less effort.
- We're supporting the Open Source community too, and our products work with Linux/Mono unlike most competitors
- We feel strongly about business ethics.
- We are a small company and can move and adapt very quickly.
- We are agile.

Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Productivity.

Good Luck!

Hi folks,

Thanks for ideas so far. Comments below:

#all - font is ok, but don't like the a's! For the some reason the last "a" makes me expect "d"!

#2 - like the simplicity. Smallcaps G isn't quite working though.

#3 - again, like the simplicity. The G is elegant too. I have the same issue with font. Would like to see more types of globe, or other relevant symbols.

#4 - nice to see another variation in globe style.
Not too keen on the swoosh effect through the text.

Again, a great start, thanks! Looking forward to seeing more ideas.

Hi folks

Thanks to you all for the refinements and submissions.

I've discussed these further with the team, and we are all very impressed with the quality of work here.

We think we'd like more emphasis on FUN and EASY, with a touch of roundness/globe (as all of you have picked up already).
We're not sure how you'd emphasise this visually, but we're happy to see ideas.

Also, having seen your work we prefer the versions that separating the logo from the text - much like BWM and Sony-Erickson do.

We'd like to evolve the ideas as suggested above, but some comments on specific items:

#6 font is less formal, we're keen to have separate logo
#7 I quite like the illustration addition, but the team wants separate logo
#9 like it, getting closer with separate logo. nice font too
#10 a little futuristic, but nice to see an attempt at a new globe logo. Font a bit glorious
#11 like having separate logo, but this is a bit tech
#12 better placement than #11

Thanks again folks!

Thanks guys,

Blesseville
#17 - I like this more than the previous one, but it's still not saying what we want.

Logoholik
#18 - Good to see another variation. However, this particular one makes me think of sport.

Crikey, this is tricky. If anyone has any suggstions regarding how I can communicate better, then please feel free to say so!

Here are some logos that I like, that I think are along the right "style" of Fun, Easy and Friendly (but these ones don't incorporate a globe concept)

http://simplebits.com/ - I love the way he gets leverage of the logo throughout other design work. Also, the "imperfect" look is attractive and informal I think.

http://microformats.org/ - Nice, simplistic looking logo.

http://www.37signals.com/ - These guys using interesting logos for their products AND their company. Although we don't want to mimick this style, it's this kind of commercial/open source look that we like.

Thanks for your patience, and do tell me how I can be of more help.

Hi folks,

Again, thanks for your efforts - we're really starting to solidify our viewpoints now.

In fact, we'd like to *** CLOSE SUBMISSIONS **** within 24 hours and then make a final decision.

Some comments on the latest...

All:
- The logos are getting more distinctive, which is cool. Thank you.
- We definately want the logo to stand up on it's own, even *without* the text.
- Based on current submissions, PLAYFUL, CHILDISH and FUN is where the emphasis is at now.

Logoholik
We like you're work, and we like the playful font in #6.
The logo in #18 is great because it's a) round, and b) striking. However, if you can do one more iteration we'd like it to see if you can somehow make it more childish & playful. We'd like to see something less tidy and conformative.
Does that make sense?

Dewa Jaya
#20 We like too. can you try it without the arrows around the globe. Then...

- a version with web 2.0 shadow
- a version of the existing one but where the top image is *really* glossy and shiny.
- a version that is more rough, childish and playful. Perhaps less neat lines if possible?

Blesseville
Thanks for the new additions. #22 is best but we're still not close enough with it.

Thanks again folks, I hope I'm not asking for too much here and do say if I am! (I've read the guidelines but it's hard to know where enough is engough.)
