Due Nov. 26: Logo for Elder Law Attorney $300
Admin code added by Abby - 4KC94264HM493831S
Project Summary:
What text should be included in the main part of the logo?
“Schomer Law” and maybe “probate, real estate and elder abuse”
What type of product or service do you offer?
I’m an attorney specializing in elder law. My primary services are helping seniors and their families with legal problems.
How long have you been in business?
I’ve been practicing law 17 years but only had my own professional corporation since 2005.
What do you hope to accomplish with your new identity?
Present a more attractive image to the public.
What are your long term goals?
To grow my elder law practice.
When is the deadline for final entries before choosing a designer?
November 26, 2007, 4:00 p.m., pacific standard time.
Audience Profile:
Please describe your existing audience
Generally adults 40+; the majority are family members helping their seniors; occasionally I help seniors directly.
Who would you like to add to your audience?
Perhaps more professional trustees.
Perception/Tone/Guidelines:
What type of logo would you like?
I am using a tree—probably an oak tree--as the central symbol of my business. I am looking for a spare, black & white pen and ink drawing. The image should be representational—almost cartoon-like—and not a facsimile of a tree. I've attached a sample page that I pulled from a design book. My favorite style is the light bulb in the upper right corner. The chair in the upper left corner also has elements of what I am looking for. I'm looking for these types of styles to be applied to a tree and logo.
Do you have any colors in mind for your logo? (if so, why?)
My preference is simple black lines on a white background. Some earth tone colors may be incorporated.
Do you have any specific images or icons in mind that you would definitely like to see incorporated into your logo?
The tree.
Communication Strategy:
What attributes would you like your logo to reflect about your business?
Safety, shelter, strength.
What is your tagline or slogan?
I will probably use the one listed above: “probate, real estate and elder abuse”.
What is the overall message you are trying to convey to your target audience?
To me, the tree conveys strength and wisdom. People in need of my services often find themselves in confusing a confusing maze of conflicting laws and unresponsive solutions. I hope to be their answer.
Where will your new logo be used?
My primary vision is to incorporate it into my letterhead. It would also be used on my website.
Competitive Positioning:
Who are your competitors and what do you think about their logos?
None that I can think of.
List competitive URLs if possible
What sets you apart from your competitors?
Experience and results.
Targeted Message:
State a single-minded word or phrase that will appropriately describe your company:
Compassionate solutions.
Other considerations:
my current web site is found at www.schomerlaw.com. You can learn more about who I am from the site.
I am in the process of creating a blog that will probably look like this:

Excellent work all. Here are a few thoughts on what has been submitted so far (11/15/2007).
I wasn't looking for the light bulb in the design ... I just pointed to that as an example of the preferred style. While I appreciate the creative inspiration, there is nothing in the light bulb icon that I would keep.
The designs by Penny Lane and Artemii are closest in range for my vision. I would say that the Penny Lane tree, while excellent, is too picture perfect; I'm looking for something very minimalist. On the other end, the Artemii design captures some of the minimalist features, but doesn't appear serious enough for my work ... especially the text appears almost cartoon in nature. I realize that moving into the 'cartoon realm' is a risk for my vision but if you return to the lightbulb design I presented above, it has a more serious 'mad scientist' or 'artistic sketchbook' look to it rather than a cartoon. The other inspiration that comes to mind is an architect's rough sketches ... Le Courbusier or Frank Gerry come to mind.
Another note, I would prefer to see the tree to the left of the firm name and not sitting on top.
Thanks to everyone and hopefully my thoughts help.
Very truly yours,
Scott Schomer

Thank you for submitting. Your font layout and design is very interesting but your tree is too cartoonish. The designer that has so far captured the closest image for the tree is xpressions. I really like the look ... very rough hewn ... representational. To me it has the look of a pen & ink sketch drawing.
I saw some of those same feelings in one of the designs you submitted for the "Picture the Day" designs.
I appreciate your interest. If you feel inspired to submit another version I would be most honored.

Hi. Thank you for the feedback, however, we are not permitted to communicate via private message during the contest. The following revisions are based on your feedback:
"I would love to encourage you to submit another version or two.
I don't love the font style. I would encourage you to try out some different styles. At a minimum I would like to see the logo in Initial Capitals (i.e. first letters higher than the rest). I like the 'roughness' of the sketch ... I love the color choices (including the black-only version) and I love the base of the tree ... how the horizon fades away in a pen stroke. That being said, however, I would encourage you to take another stab at a shape. Maybe something in the nature of an oak (slightly rounder) or perhaps the pine tree."

Contest Winner
Thank you to all who entered. I am sorry for the delay in closing the contest, but I had to spend some time obtaining survey opinions from those I trust. Because there was so much excellent work, this public opinion work took some time.
I am pleased to announce that designer xpressions is my choice to design my work. I look forward to working with you. I wish everyone else the best of luck.
Very truly yours,
Scott
