I'm interested too.. just got hit with a massive menu layout for a spa salon.. with about 12 pages of text & associated print items to go with it.. I have no idea on if that would be a competition thing or if I need to find one person?

It would be possible to post it as a contest, although there are only a few members with design-for-print knowledge. Kootch and myself, off the top of my head... I think maybe 2Square as well... maybe Eagle?
I'm sure Palmer knows more than me. I'm a bit of a recluse.

I would say we have at least 10 regular designers that are predominantly print designers.

I dont have a clue either, and I have some information sheets coming up that need to be made to look nice, but are predominantly text!!

I suppose it will bring a bit of diversity here

as for price I suppose around the 100-200 mark would be about right?

I guess for the competitions.. it would be for the design and layout of most of the bits for the project and then finishing off with the winner?

Yes text would be supplied or at least an idea of exactly how much text there will be. That way the designer knows how much room to leave to text, how to lay it out, background images etc.

We would probably even provide some of the images but im not sure yet on that one!

Depends on the project (number of pages, are hi-rez images provided?, etc). There's a 1-sided postcard competition going on now for $100 which I think is pretty fair. On average, I'd guesstimate that $125-$150 per letter-sized page would be fair. Think about the prices paid for web templates, easily the same amount of time is needed to design a single printed page as it takes to design a web page. It's just a different set of production requirements and a different set of skills.

If no print-quality images can be provided than the designer must delve into his/her personal stock of royalty-free images (legal, of course) which wasn't always cheap to purchase. Not to mention the amount of time that it takes to search potentially thousands of images. If photos can be provided than the majority of the designer's time is spent designing, not looking for pictures which of course makes it more worth while to enter.

Most of that is print work, and I need an idea of prices, if you can get me an idea in the next 20 mins that would be great, as im just finisheing the proposal now and if you give me an idea on prices you might just get them

My main print job is not coming up until Jan.. it's a lot of work getting the info together we have the logo and the "feel" but to get the presentation required will take time..

It's great to know the enthusiasm though as we often have print layout to do.. I just finished one job myself that I could so easily made a competition for but was unsure if it was too small or to precise or too whatever. It could have saved me many hours of mucking about because I am not very good at all and have to work very hard to produce a mediocre result.

I'm comfortable with the RGB/CMYK concept; my main confusion lies in all this 'bleed limit' lark...if I'm sent the specs, I'm sure myself and Corel can handle it!

I regularly prepare large scale (20"x32") posters which are printed on a $200,000 Kodak LED drum printer (designed to print photographs)...a little different from a printer's press I would imagine but there will be no stopping me entering! :brow:
