Hi,

The challenge of this contest is to QUICKLY create a sensitive, friendly and appealing site while making it appropriate for the serious nature of the subject. We need initial entries by next Monday June 14th!

Abstract: This contest is for 2 HTML template pages – A main page and a 2nd level page. Deliverables include the 2 HTML templates and all required graphics. The prize is $350.

Scope of Deliverables:
- Two HTML templates, as per Design Guidelines, below.
- Associated CSS style sheets for headers/signpost text, for textual navigation elements, for body text, footer, etc.

Contest Rules: Designers should submit designs for the first page by June 14th. We hope to choose a winner by as early as June 18th.

Website Name: “Asbestos Care Community” or similar

URL: TBD

Description of Website: Mesothelioma, the cancer one can get from prolonged exposure to asbestos materials is often a fatal form of cancer that strikes many years after the asbestos exposure is finished. There are many thousands of people worldwide who have suffered or are suffering as their loved ones contract and are ill with Asbestos Cancer.

This website gives the families of victims a place to share their stories and information on how they coped or are coping with this horrible disease.

Type of impression the site makes: The site should be warm and sensitive, it should look friendly and not businesslike. It should have curves in it and not all rectangles and boxes

Audience: Family and friends of people dealing with terminal cancer of a loved one. The main readers will likely be middle-aged women whose husbands worked in professions that exposed them to asbestos 20 or more years ago. They will come to the site to read about others experience and to add their own comments in a discussion area.

Colors: I will leave this up to the designers.

Design Guidelines:

- Optimize for 800X600 screens
- Most site viewers will be on dialup – so graphics cannot be too heavy.
- Should not include browser-specific code

Menu Contents should contain the following elements:

A- Home: Welcome page

B- Coping with Physical pain
- Some Background
- Pain Management
o Talking to your Doctor
o Therapeutic Options

C- Coping with Emotional pain

- Some Background
- Coping and Support
o A Guide to Your Feelings
o What You Can Do
o Spiritual Support
o Financial Support

D- Our Stories
- We were there, too – articles by people who have been there.
- Asbestos Care Community (forum software)

E - Resources and Links

First Page template – home page – medium graphics can be colorful and friendly rather than look like a business website. Should express the theme of caring and coping and community. Should have curves rather than just angles.

Second Template Page should have:

- Navigation to all pages
- A central section incorporating 6-8 paragraphs of text
- relevant images

Sites I like:
I like sites that are clean and easy to navigate. This site in particular should be very easy to navigate and fast loading.

Speed is important here - we need to get this site up and running ASAP.

thanks,
sam.

Great, I look forward to your entries.

Another thought as you are preparing your entries:
I think we need to have people in the graphics.
Keep in mind that the people who will read tis site are mostly working class - their loved ones worked in factories and industry and were exposed to building materials with asbestos. So the images should feel appropriate for this group. Pictures of professors or models will not have the same effect here.

Hi Sam.

Here is a start, a warm and friendly front page. I didn't quite know what to put on this page so I thought I would put some nice pictures there to get that warm feeling. If there's something else you would like to se here, let me know and I'll be happy to add more content. If you think this is something you could use I'll start on the second page.

Anne

Anne, Thanks for your entry.

We want to get a few designs from different designers before commenting on what we like or don't like.

We are expecting several more entries, right guys?

Hi!

After a bit of a delay I am back with comments on all of the designs and our choice of finalists.

Anne - This one was attractive but looked too somber for us. Also those too guys were'nt quite right for us.

Ruairi - Your very organized design was too square for what we are looking for.

hairyiguana - Your pleasantly soft design is attractive but also too "you're about to meet your maker" for us.

Dziner - Yours is close to what we are looking for - The colors are good and the curves too. Only issue is that we need a picture that gives a similar feeling but where the subjects are a working class man in his 50's and a woman who could be his wife or daughter.

Deplex - Your professional design was nice but reminded us a little of a women's health site.

DesignGeneral - Your design is also close to what we are looking for. We like your design in general, but it is a little too upbeat for our needs. We need a picture of middle aged working class people having some sort of interaction - not too happy and not mourning either.

Thanks to all of you for your great entries! Choosing between them was not easy.

As our finalists we have chosen DesignGeneral and Dziner.

We would like to ask both of you to see if you can make the minor changes described in our comments and resubmit in the next few days - Monday would be optimal.

thanks,
Sam Michelson

Still not quite right.
The kind of people who get Mesothelioma are people who worked in shipyards, construction, and other working-class jobs. Our target audience are not typical golfers.

The people you picture should preferably look like they belong to this group too.

thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for these spiffy entries!

Our comments: Coming up with a good image for this is really tough. All of your images were good but we believe the best one is couple on the porch. With both of you DZiner and Design General, having done a really nice job on the template,

We have decided to go with Design General.

Thank you both for your time and to everyone else who worked on this contest as well.

Hi,

Yes, I will need a few changes.

First the Title needs a different Font -
I am not sure which font, but the cursive letters that are not connected does not work for me.

The subtitle should be more like - "sharing stories and healing"

Also the links on the laft side should be stronger.

After we have taht we can get to teh internal page too.

regards,
Sam Michelson

I think it looks good.

Can you add a box under the menu that would be for announcements or news messages

For the second page I will want a place to put in a relevant graphic, navigation to all pages that does not look just like the main page, Also please include a design where there can an article and a dicussion beside it. The idea is that someone writes an article and people come and comment on that article.

I look forward to wrapping this up at your earliest convenience.

regards,
sam.
