Logo & Template Contest for Luxist.com
We have two needs for this contest, a logo and a template. We are posting the logo for $250 and the template for $350. If someone does both and we choose them we will give them the total $600. If someone wants to work around the logos and just make the template that is fine. I’m assuming this is ok with the good people at Design Outpost who we love so much.
Weblogs, Inc. is a publisher specializing in professionally produced blogs. Our blogs include
www.joystiq.com,
www.engadet.com,
www.bloggingbaby.com and
www.autoblog.com. The logos for Joystiq and BloggingBaby were created by designers at Design Outpost.
We are starting a new blog dedicated to luxury living called Luxist. The brand is for both men and women, and like our other blogs will feature short editorial blurbs (think 75 to 150 words). Autoblog.com is very similar in structure to Luxist: a lot of short takes on items supported by a single photo. Sometimes the photos are wide, sometimes they are smaller. You can normally see two stories on the blog every time you hit the page down key.
The brands we would cover at Luxist include:
http://www.gucci.com
http://www.bentleymotors.com
http://www.hermes.com
http://www.bacararesort.com
http://www.peninsula.com
http://www.baccarat.fr
http://www.fourseasons.com
http://www.jetshareus.com
http://www.maybachusa.com
http://www.rolex.com
Media brands that are similar to Luxist include:
The Robb Report -
http://www.robbreport.com
Cigar Aficionado -
http://www.cigaraficionado.com
Travel & Leisure -
http://www.travelandleisure.com
We are looking for a logo and a template for this blog. The requirements for the format are:
1.There must be a main column on the left for content. Content column should be the same width of the our other blogs like
www.autoblog.com and
www.engadget.com.
2. There needs to be a list of categories on the right hand side. These categories are:
Cigars
Décor
Dinning
Estates
Gadgets
Handbags
Jewelry
Journeys
Services
Spa & Treatments
Spirits
Timepieces
Water
Wheels
Wine
Wings
Writing Instruments
3. Each post will have a ranking of one to five dollar signs ($ - $$$$$). This should be an icon that fits with the overall design.
4. Posts that are gender specific will have a small male or female icon. Posts that are not gender specific will not have this icon. These icons will also be on the right hand side in the column/navigation so people can pick male only or female only when they navigate the site (you can see an example of this at the adult site Fleshbot.com which lets you choose gay or straight at the top of the second column—warning NSFW!).
5. We like animated logos as you can tell from
www.joystiq.com, but this is not required.
6. Perhaps the categories could be icons?
7. There must be room for Google Adsense Ads in a standard ad format (medium rectangle, skyscraper, banner, etc.).
8. There will be links along the bottom of each post including Read, Permanent Link, Email This and Discuss. On Engadget.com you can see these at the bottom of each blog post. However, if you wanted to do icons for this as well we would consider that. We want the design of Luxist to be cleaner and unique, we don’t want an Engadget.com knock off.
9. There needs to be a links for About, Advertise, and Tips.
10. We like fixed width design of around 800 pixels for the content. We don’t design for people with monitors smaller then 800 pixels wide—those folks can just scroll until they upgrade their monitors. :-)
11. HTML and CSS design is just fine.
12. We would like the ability to put in a second ad slot aside from the Google Adwords. So, if two or three ads slots can be fit in great, however, two is just fine. We try to go easy on the advertising and make the content 70%+ of the webpage (at least if you page down twice and do the math, above the fold might be more 50-50 ad/editorial).
Other comments:
- Minimalist design is ok.
- Non-traditional layout is ok.
- The logo must work well for other uses like a business cards, polo shirt, letter head, magazine logo, etc., so please keep that in mind.
- Luxist is for both men and women, it shouldn’t be as masculine as Cigar Aficionado nor as feminine as Kate Spade.
- Luxist is not targeted at a specific age group, but the audience will defiantly skew slightly older. We expect 25 years or older in general, with a good portion of the readers in the 30 to 50 year-old range.
- no .com in the logo please -- that is so dorky, really.
I’m going to have the entire contest end on Friday the 17th, and I’ll post a lot of comments on both the logo and the template forums.
Any questions!?!? Let me know.
