[A] Tsunami Relief Organization Seeks Web Design - $20

(Admin code added by Palmer - 429264034)

As all of you know, many communities were devistated by the recent tsunami in S. Asia. Although there has been an outpouring of support from around the world, many of the tiny villages on some of the small islands in Thailand seem to have been passed by. A group of Westerners who regularly visit one particular island have created a non-profit relief organization to help these villages - The North Andaman Tsunami Relief Fund.

We have loads of images, and a simple/clean interface with substiantial amounts of text would serve well. A basic tropical theme is desired, but not something flashy like a travel site - more subdued.

One of the contributors/helpers to the area has provided a couple of pages on their site as placeholder site. So, you can get an idea of what we are doing at http://www.godifferently.com/golden_buddha_beach.asp . The design is nice but this is just a page of their travel site, and we'd like the new site to have it's own domain and design. But, it would ultimately be somewhat similar to this.

If you are a designer and you would be willing to make a contribution to this effort, it would be much appreciated and you'll be making a direct contribution in a meaninful way to a group of people who really need help.

DESIGN

The fund is concerned with a small island in S. Thailand, and surrounding areas. There is a small community of westerners living there, and some Thai fishing villages. So, the theme should be tropical island in nature but tempered with a more humaitarian/non-profit style of design. It's important not to make the site too 'light' with too many images of beautiful beaches, etc. even though its a notoriously beautiful area. A good theme would be to show would be people working on relief efforts, etc.

The colors can be the traditional island/tropical types, but tastefully mixed - ocean blue, palm green, brown, orange, etc.

I have uploaded a zip file of photos taken from recent relief efforts. You can grab the file (1.2m) from http://www.revmedia.net/bucket/natr_images.zip. Any of these photos would be good for use on the site. You can also get an idea of what's going on out there at the moment. You can also see some links at http://www.goldenbuddhabeach.com/tsu...ge_public.html.

The design should be fairly clean, and easy to navigate. Uncluttered, and simple.

Another theme that was recommended was the HORNBILL, which is a common bird in that area. I wouldn't want to throw too many around for fear of the site becoming too silly, but it could be a good theme to be integrated into a logo or maybe in some subtle/creative way. This feedback came in so I'm just sharing it. Here are a few hornbill images (not very good ones!) to give an idea: http://www.planetware.com/sub/HORNBILL.HTM (this idea may or may not work!)

HOMEPAGE & NAV ELEMENTS

The following elements should be seen on the homepage:

Persistent Nav Bar

--About NATR
--How To Help
--Accomplishments
--Current Needs
--Stories From NATR
--Projects
--Contact

Secondary Elements: These should be on the homepage, but not necessarily part of the main navbar. They can be custom designed, buttons, clickable graphics, stylized elements, or just text links.

-- link to Map of Affected Area (link to page containing map image)
--Donation Area - with credit card logos and link to Donation Page
--Thumbnail Images, linked to larger images
--Main Paragraph of Introductory Text
--In the News - (a link to a page with newspaper articles or mentions of NATR)
I hope to hear from you soon!!! Thanks, Dave

hello all -

After some discussion a decision was made that the ideal image for the logo would probably be that of a boat, done in the Moken style of that area. The hornbill probably isn't going to fit.

Here are a couple of links to pictures of Moken Boats, and there's a bunch more if you search for 'moken boat' on Google Images.

Could we try the different logo styles as adapted to this idea?

thanks, Dave

Hello Dave,

Though I could not do a logo for you in the manner that you described in the previous post, I did take a stab at the design.

I tried to keep it "tropical in color" but not like going on vacation.

You will see that single sprout coming out of the tree... that represents "New Growth" which is what the relief effort is all about... the new growth of a demolished community.

I hope that this at least gets something started here for you, and I look forward to your feedback.
