Arrow AppTranslator - Translation Software Tool - $150 - March 9th

(Admin code added by Michael - S6369850W)

Hi All,

I browsed through your work in the forum and am very excited at seeing what you can do for me .

I'm starting up as an ISV (Independant Software Vendor) and need a logo for my software product: AppTranslator.
Since I don't have a cool company name yet, I'll probably give my company the same name as the product (AppTranslator).

The Product
This software is a tool for other software engineers: It helps them translate their own software in foreign languages to help sell abroad. Hence the name: App (short for application. iow: their software) - Translator.
By translating their software, I mean the drop-down menus, the dialogs (screens, forms, pages,...), the various messages, ...
The program will therefore be used by software engineers and by translators. The main sales target is the software engineer.

The Logo
Will be put in the top left banner of my website. It will also be used in the software itself (e.g.: splashscreen and About box). It should also be easy to extract a part of the logo to turn it into an icon for the program.

I'd like a simple logo that gives a dynamic look to the product and the web site. The graphical touch should outline the purpose of the product: Go from 'local' to 'global'.
The slogan (see below) needs not be part of the logo (but I leave it up to you).

The link below shows a draft for the web site template. It would be nice if it integrates in there, but once again, YOU are the pros so don't feel bound to it.

http://www.apptranslator.com/draft/1/index.html

The Slogan
FYI, the slogan will very probably be: 'Hello, world'. This time, it's for real!
Explanation:
'Hello World' is a very famous expression among programmers. It was the message displayed by a very rudimentary sample program in the most famous programming teaching book.
'Now it's for real!' (hopefully) emphasizes on the fact the AppTranslator helps people sell their software worldwide instead of being bound to a linguistic market.

eziey,

thanks for your input. Interesting start.

The display in icon sizes is a very good idea. It's very useful to see the different resolutions (16x16, 32x32 and 48x48. I'm not especially interested in 12x12 though). 16x16 doesn't render very well, btw (but I realize this one is a difficult one).

Can you please show a few variations including a background color for the text as well (not only the icon) (it will be needed for the web site top banner), other kinds of blue, text on the right.
Also, although the contrast between App and Translator is very interesting, Translator looks a little too thin to me.

Maybe a slightly more personal touch for the graphics ?

Thanks again for starting the contest.

Thanks everyone for your submissions. I'm happy to see the contest starting up.

eziey:
I like the concept of this 'A around the world' (It is an A, isn't it ? ) and the color effects. I'd like to see a few variations of this A.
It displays obviously better as an icon than the previous one.
Regarding the color background, I like the white circle around the icon. But I'm less satisfied with the... hmmm... how does one call that in English ?... borders ? contours ? of the letters. Is it possible to use other color combinations ? Feel free to suggest other colors (including for the background).

Paula:

Simple and neat.
Probably a little too generic. Also, I'm afraid it wouldn't render well as an icon.
A detail: I'd prefer AppTranslator (in one word) rather than APP Translator.
Also: "Hello World". This time it's for real! (I mean "Hello World" is a quote. It should have the " )

Fabian:

All lowercase ? Why not...
I like the font but the color combination is a litle too cold.
I like the concept of this stylized 'A and the world'. Can you give it a more dynamic look ? (Don't ask! I don't have anything special in mind )
Good candidate for an icon. Can you please submit your revisions with icon sizes (as eziey did)

Thanks again to all.

eziey,

thanks for the quick follow-up.

Good idea to keep the text with background in white. #3 is better than #2 in this regard.
The stylized A is getting better (#4). The left edge is maybe a little too straight.

I have no idea about whether I prefer the lowercase or uppercase T !

Can you please try the full logo on blue background (the same blue you used for the icons background).

What about reusing the stylized A in the text.

Regarding icon sizes, sorry I changed my mind : 12x12 is interesting as well in order to make a small 'document icon', like the one in the top left corner of your browser (if you're using Internet Explorer).

samoyloff,

thanks for joining the contest.

I like the text very much: italic-like font, contrast between app and translator, very nice font. I prefer the use of 2 colors (such as in #1).

logo #1 unfortunately looks too much like a competitor's : http://www.schaudin.com

logo #2: Nice work. A bit too 'heavy' on my opinion though.

Also, I'd like brighter colors.

Thanks again.

Serge.

Fabian,

Much better! (thanks for the icons btw)

Can you make it brighter. I like the concept but it makes me think of the late winter we're currently having here in Europe. Please make me think of spring

Also, I'd like to see it with colored background.

samoyloff,

great concept ! My favorite is #at_03. (both for concept and color combinations).

Can you soften the blue 'rays' ?
Can you give it a less classical look ?

Also, let's pay attention to the icon issue. Can you show the concept in icon sizes (as eziey and Fabian above). For the 16x16 and 12x12, you may need to keep the CD/World only.

TIA.
